Exploring Chongqing is always an exciting experience. But one of the buildings that really took my breath away last time we were in the city was Raffles City Chongqing. It was impossible not to notice this futuristic shopping mall on the riverside skyline of Chongqing. Towering right on the confluence of the Yangtze River and Jialing River, this complex of skyscrapers is the epitome of Chongqing. From this vantage point, the city is always striving, always reaching higher both literally and figuratively.

Before you even get too close, the towers will immediately command your attention. It was the first time I ever saw them, I stood right on the riverside promenade and couldn’t take my eyes off them. It was like a scene from a sci-fi movie — the vertically-oriented towers and that square tube horizontally cutting through midair. It was then that I realized the Crystal sky bridge is actually an architectural and engineering marvel.
The Crystal (or Sky Bridge) is an enclosed structure that soars 250 meters above the ground and connects several of the towers. The entire Raffles City Chongqing complex is made up of eight skyscrapers in total, each over 200 meters in height.
This is really more than a shopping mall — it’s a microcosm of the city itself.
My First Impressions from the Riverside
We didn’t really have a specific time or place in mind where we were going to see the Raffles City Chongqing towers so we just strolled along the riverside promenade and stopped wherever we found the best view. For my money, you can’t beat a view from the Chaotianmen Bridge area, where you can take in the whole skyline. Capturing the fullness of both rivers, all the skyscrapers, and that iconic red bridge that symbolizes the urban heart of the city. The view from this part of the river promenade is my favorite because it really showcases the totality of what makes Chongqing tick.
This time we happened to be there in the afternoon, and the day was particularly overcast and grey. In some ways, that just made the contrast with the silver towers more surreal and otherworldly. It was one of those moments where you forget how many people there are around you. Time seems to stand still and you’re left in this perfectly-quieted serenity. The small pleasure of seeing the world slowly drifting by on those riverboats as the breeze tousles your hair — it’s the moment when it all comes together in a neat little package that you can tuck away as being so uniquely Chongqing.

Visiting the Raffles City Chongqing Complex
Standing there on the riverside looking up, you have no idea what you are looking at. It is a whole world unto itself. The shopping mall complex, with skyscrapers soaring into the clouds above, can only be described as a Raffles City. Developed by CapitaLand, this mixed-use integrated development complex covers a total area of over 1.1 million square meters. That is to say, it’s a vertical city.
There are high-end residential and office towers, a luxury shopping mall, and a five-star hotel. The whole complex is designed to mimic the city’s traditional river heritage, with sailing ships decorating each of the towers, symbolizing good fortune and the journey forward.

We decided to venture inside to see for ourselves. There were so many international brands and boutiques to check out. The Raffles City Chongqing Shopping Mall is an indoor oasis complete with a variety of dining options, restaurants, and modern art installations. There are also some local favorites like hotpot and spicy noodle eateries if you get peckish. The Raffles City is a microcosm unto itself, a testament to human ingenuity and city building.
The Crystal Sky Bridge

The most notable and exciting part of the Raffles City Chongqing complex is, of course, The Crystal sky bridge. This horizontal “sky corridor” bridges across four of the skyscrapers, spanning a full 250 meters above the city. You can access it by purchasing tickets to the Exploration Deck.
The Crystal has a 360-degree panoramic view of the city and the Yangtze River and Jialing River meeting at Chongqing’s heart. There is also a glass-floor skywalk that will give you a bird’s eye view straight down to the river itself. That was one of the scariest and most exciting parts for me personally. But the best time to do it is during sunset, when you can catch all of those beautiful golden reflections of the skyscrapers towering above the river itself. The Raffles City Chongqing becomes all lit up at night in various bright colors — a true kaleidoscope of light and sound that you can see for miles.

A Family Visit to Raffles City Chongqing
What made this visit even more memorable for me was the fact that we visited as a family. There were so many emotional parts to this trip but one of my favorite moments was just having my mother hold our daughter up and take a quick photo with that stunning skyline backdrop behind us. It was one of those quiet but epic life moments you just soak in and smile.
It is about the place and what it represents for so many people — three generations standing here in front of this symbol of where this city has come from. A legacy of resilience, industry, hard work, and grit. The meaning that this tower has for so many residents can’t really be explained in a few words. But that’s how you know you’re in one of China’s most special cities — where every structure you see has a thousand different meanings.

Tips for Visiting
If you are planning on visiting Raffles City Chongqing, I learned a few things along the way that may come in handy. There are some practicalities I wanted to share with you so you can make the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. This included planning ahead to not miss out on things or waste time, but also how to take the best photos.
The Best Time of Day to Visit Raffles City Chongqing
It all depends on how you want to take it in. But for the best views of the entire city skyline, I would say that late afternoon to evening is the best time to go. You get to experience that dramatic transition from day to night, to how the city lights up in this giant kaleidoscope of color and movement that you can see for miles.
The Nearest Metro Station to Raffles City Chongqing
It’s the Xiaoshizi Station, and it’s on either Line 1 or Line 6. This will get you right to the foot of Raffles City, after which it’s just a short walk away.
Tickets to Raffles City Chongqing
Tickets for the Raffles City Chongqing Shopping Mall itself are free, but you do need to purchase tickets to visit The Crystal Sky Deck. Tickets for The Crystal can be purchased directly on-site or online in advance.
Photography Tip for Raffles City Chongqing
A wide-angle lens is your best bet for taking in the full scope of Raffles City Chongqing in one frame. I would suggest heading to the opposite side of the riverbank from Raffles City. The Chaotianmen Wharf area provides you with the best vantage point from the river to get that entire full perspective on Raffles City Chongqing in the foreground.
What Is So Special About Raffles City Chongqing?
You don’t really need me to tell you this, but for a skyscraper complex of this size and scale to be in China’s Western Region, it really has to stand out. It needs to be something special, a modern miracle of engineering, a reminder of just how far this city has come and will continue to go.
A lot of what makes Raffles City Chongqing so unique in Chongqing is how it weaves together Chongqing’s unique history and identity into this one brand new place. Chongqing has always been this hazy mountain city — made up of the river, the fog, the grime, and the smog. A city defined by its residents, its sheer grit, and its communal fortitude. This structure just so perfectly sums it all up.
It’s like looking at two different worlds melded into one. A symbol for how far Chongqing has come but also what lies ahead in the future. We have come so far from that mountain port covered in mist. Raffles City Chongqing was the first step in finally breaking into that clouded future. The only comparison I can draw is to the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, which was also designed by architect Moshe Safdie. That structure is probably the most Instagrammable place in Singapore. The Raffles City Chongqing complex is just Chongqing’s way of saying that, in its own language.

Final Thoughts
If you are looking for the Instagram-ready images to complement that post, this is your place. Raffles City Chongqing is the epicenter of modern China for a reason, and you have to come and see it for yourself. Chongqing is just unlike anywhere else I have ever been before. It is a city of humanity at its best — and the buildings and structures that the people of Chongqing have left behind are part of that legacy. A testament to both their ambition and pride in where they have come from and where they are now.
Western China has so much to offer visitors, but in the end, it all comes back to Chongqing. The Raffles City Chongqing complex is one of the most Instagrammable places in all of Chongqing and I would suggest you make it your number one destination when in the city. So come for the photos, stay for the experience, and leave with an even greater understanding of one of China’s most exciting, vibrant cities.
