We are Derek and Nicole. ShinyVisa is our family travel blog where we document the places we explore together as a couple, with our daughter, and with our parents. Most of our travels revolve around scenic nature, mountains, rivers, local food, and cultural discoveries.
We share personal stories, practical travel guides, honest reflections, and photo-heavy journeys from Asia and beyond. Whether it is hiking the cliffs of Wushan, wandering the markets of Bangkok, enjoying a family staycation in Malaysia, or discovering a quiet temple in Japan, our goal is to inspire simple, meaningful travel.
If you are looking for real experiences, scenic places, and family-friendly travel ideas, we hope our stories help you dream, plan, and create your own memories.
We cover a wide range of places, but these are the regions we return to again and again in our family travels.

Family travel has been at the center of ShinyVisa’s heart. Our fondest memories are those of shared experiences over a simple bowl of noodles in a small town, or a leisurely walk with our parents along a riverside boardwalk, or our daughter’s first glimpse of a mountain vista and her gleeful reaction.
We’ve taken many such photos over the years and these are just a glimpse of our family travels. We hope they inspire you to remember that every journey, no matter how short it is a weekend trip or long sojourn, can become a family tale for years to come.
For those of you who are planning a trip to Asia or just in need of some scenic travel inspiration, please start with our destination guides and longform stories. We hope our itineraries, hotel reviews and reminiscing will help you plan something special for you and yours.
