Planning Your Malaysia Trip

When to visit Malaysia

Malaysia is hot and humid year-round. December–February is drier on the west coast (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka). East coast beaches have the best weather from March to October. Try to avoid east coast monsoon season (November–February) if you plan to visit islands like Tioman or Perhentian. For tourists coming to KL, Penang, and Cameron Highlands, there isn't really a bad time to go. These are great places to visit year-round. Outside of islands, you'll probably get light rain from time to time during your visit. December–January can be crowded due to holidays.

West coast vs east coast

The west coast contains Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka, and Cameron Highlands. These places are easier to travel between. The west coast will be your best choice for your first Malaysia trip. The east coast is home to beautiful islands and beaches like Tioman Island, Perhentian Islands, and Redang Island. The downside? East coast beaches have more of a defined wet season (aka monsoon season). I recommend visiting east coast beaches from March to October.

Starting your trip in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's primary airport (KLIA & KLIA2) and busiest city. It makes sense to arrive here and use Kuala Lumpur as your base of operations while you explore Malaysia. Most travelers spend 2–4 days in Kuala Lumpur before flying/traveling to Penang, Cameron Highlands, or Melaka. KL has some of the best hotels in Malaysia. It's great for shopping, food, and transport to other destinations.

Transportation: Grab and trains

Grab is like Uber—but it owns the ride-hailing market in Malaysia. It's easy to use and great for getting around cities and short distances. For longer distances, Malaysia has an excellent train network. Trains run from KL to Penang (stopping in Butterworth), Ipoh, and south Malaysia. Trains are clean, affordable, and a comfortable way to travel. Long-distance buses are also plentiful. They're a great way to save money while exploring Malaysia. From Kuala Lumpur, you'll want to take buses or private transfers to Cameron Highlands and Melaka.

Food and travel with kids

Food is amazing in Malaysia! Malay, Chinese, and Indian food influence Malaysian cuisine. Hawker centers and restaurants offer incredible food at all price points. Penang is especially known for its street food. Kuala Lumpur also has delicious street food no matter where you are in the city. Malaysia is also incredibly family-friendly. It's safe, the infrastructure is excellent, and there are loads of things to do with kids. English is very widely spoken at tourist attractions, hotels, and restaurants. You can usually pay by card at hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments. Hawker centers and many street food vendors only accept cash.

Suggested itinerary length

Five to seven days is enough time to visit Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and either Cameron Highlands or Melaka. Ten days would give you a little more flexibility. If you have two weeks, consider spending some time on Malaysia's east coast islands or visit both Cameron Highlands and Melaka. Most first-time visitors stick to between 5–7 days on Malaysia's west coast.

Language and currency

English is commonly spoken at major tourist attractions, hotels, and restaurants. The official language is Bahasa Malaysia. Most places accept credit cards (hotels, malls, restaurants). Having cash is helpful if you want to visit any of Malaysia's incredible hawker centers. ATMs are easy to find.
