Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the best area to stay?

Start by looking at the places you plan to visit most often. Staying in a central neighbourhood can save time, but the most convenient area will depend on your itinerary, transport options and travel style.

Families may prefer quieter neighbourhoods with larger rooms and easy access to public transport, while first-time visitors may find it more convenient to stay close to major attractions. If you enjoy dining out or exploring at night, choose an area where restaurants, shops and evening activities are within walking distance.

Our destination guides compare the main neighbourhoods in each city to help you find the area that best suits your trip.

Is it better to stay near a station or a major attraction?

Staying near a train or metro station is usually more practical when you plan to explore several parts of a city or take frequent day trips. It can also make travelling with luggage much easier.

However, staying near a major attraction may be more enjoyable when you are visiting for only a night or two, or when most of your itinerary is concentrated in one area. For example, being within walking distance of an old town, theme park or scenic district may be more valuable than having access to a major transport hub.

The best option depends on the size of the destination, the length of your trip and how often you expect to use public transport.

How far in advance should I book my hotel?

For most destinations, booking around one to three months in advance should give you a reasonable choice of hotels and room types.

You may need to book three to six months ahead when travelling during cherry blossom season, major public holidays, school holidays, festivals or other peak periods. Popular family rooms, ryokans, boutique hotels and accommodation close to major attractions can sell out even earlier.

During quieter periods, it may be possible to find good last-minute rates, but waiting usually means having fewer locations and room types to choose from.

Are ShinyVisa’s hotel recommendations sponsored?

Our hotel recommendations are selected based on factors such as location, transport access, guest experience, room quality, value and suitability for different types of travellers. Payment does not automatically determine which hotels are included or how they are ranked.
