“没有比脚更长的路,没有比人更高的山。”— 汪国真
Literally, there is no road longer than your own feet, and no mountain taller than a person. Metaphorically, there is no journey too long for a determined heart, and no peak too high for the soul.
This became our motto for the day as we hiked across three of Wushan’s most iconic (and most breathtaking) trails: 三峡龙脊 Three Gorges Dragon Ridge, 神女天路 Goddess Peak Sky Road, and 三峡之巅 Peak of the Three Gorges.

Ascent of Three Gorges Dragon Ridge (三峡龙脊)
Our day began with Three Gorges Dragon Ridge, one of the most famous ridgeline hikes in the area. “龙脊” (Dragon Ridge) is no exaggeration — the narrow trail really is the backbone of a great dragon winding along the mountainside. You walk along stairs carved steeply into the rock with plunging drops on either side, and an unbroken view of mountains stretching out before you, out to the horizon.
The sun lit up the hills as we started up. The bushes were gilded with sunlight, and occasional flashes of red autumn leaves caught our attention. It was crisp, and the silence in the mountains wrapped around you like a warm blanket. My dad was at the head of the ridge with his hiking pole, a look of excited calmness before the climb.

The trail here can be steep, but the views reward you immediately. Every bend shows you another incredible angle of the Yangtze River snaking through the gorge below. The river looked peaceful from above, a jade-green surface smooth as glass. The bright blue sky and autumn colours glowing on the cliffs and ridges almost made it feel like a classical Chinese landscape painting.
Autumn Colours Frame the Yangtze River
As we continued up the ridge, the views only got more dramatic.
A patch of red leaves caught my attention — bold, bright, and seeming to glow against the muted greys and greens of the canyon wall. It made the perfect natural frame for the mountains and river below.
We stopped for a while just taking it in, admiring the cliffs descending steeply toward the river. It made the Yangtze River below feel both timeless and ancient, slipping so slowly through canyons that have stood for thousands of years.

Cargo ships plied the river down below, slicing slowly through the water as they moved. They looked so tiny next to the walls of the Wu Gorge (巫峡), which rose high on either side. Standing there, I felt at once small and profoundly connected to this place and its history — mountains that have inspired poetry, ink paintings, and storytellers for centuries.
Journey to Goddess Peak Sky Road (神女天路)
After conquering the ridge, we followed the path as it climbed into the Goddess Peak Sky Road.
It is the Goddess Peak (神女峰) that gives this route its name, the highest of Wushan’s Twelve Peaks (十二峰) and famous for its outline that looks like a celestial maiden with her hair flying behind her.
The atmosphere immediately shifted.

The ridge slowly widened out, the air grew cooler, and clouds lazily floated in the valley. The path began to zig-zag up the mountainside, and we could see the end point sign from a viewing platform near the top. “终点”, it said in bold Chinese script. The peak sat high above us, the very last step disappearing into the mist.
This section of the hike was mystical. The light, softer. The wind, gentler. Watching clouds drift across the mountains, I could see how people had come to associate these peaks with immortals and legends of yore. It is indescribably spiritual, this landscape. It makes you slow down and breathe a little deeper.
Warm Moment at Forest Rest Stop
Midway up the Goddess Peak Sky Road, we came to a clearing in the trees. It was a bright red forest installation with big Chinese characters and pointing signboards. My mom sat here, resting, a flash of sunlight in the autumn trees. The colours of the deep red structure with the amber leaves and foliage all around created such a warm, joyful moment.

It felt like an energy burst at this rest stop. It was a welcome relief to pause and relax after the climb and the rocky ridges. We sat here for a few minutes, listening to the rustling leaves and faint echoes from the canyon below.
After a while, we stumbled upon one of my favourite moments of the day. A pagoda nestled inside a circle of glowing autumn leaves. Dad was standing along the bamboo path, the leaves shimmering in the light of the sun. It felt like a hidden postcard moment.

Yangtze River Unfolds Beneath Our Feet
The next stretch of our journey brought us to sweeping views over the Yangtze again. Standing on the platform, we could see the river below twisting in a deep, curving bend, held tight between sheer mountain cliffs. It is the size of these mountains from this perspective that blows you away. Towering right out of the river’s edge, their stratified layers looking millions of years old.

Further up, the landscape became more and more softened. Mountains melted into bluish silhouettes against a hazy sky, and the river stretched far, far into the distance, like a winding ribbon disappearing into the distance. It was peaceful and dreamy.
Autumn is really the best season to see Wushan. The light is soft, the colours are vibrant, and you can see for miles across the gorge. Every few minutes, we found ourselves stopping to take it all in, admiring the views before we continued hiking.

Reaching 三峡之巅 Peak of the Three Gorges
At last, after hours of walking and climbing, we arrived at our final destination for the day: 三峡之巅 Peak of the Three Gorges. This is the highest accessible viewpoint with panoramic vistas of the Three Gorges region’s heart.
The air was cool here, lighter and fresher. The sky stretched blue far above us, clean and wide. Dad was standing next to the stone marker carved with “三峡之巅”, a proud smile on his face, the kind that only a long hike can bring.

Standing on this viewing platform, it felt like you were standing at the edge of the world. In every direction, the mountains below continued, layer upon layer of green and grey folding into the distance. The Yangtze glittered in the distance, narrowing to a sliver of jade-green as it wound between the peaks. The entire valley looked ancient, peaceful, and magnificent.
It was the perfect moment to take it all in. It was a fusion of all we had hiked through that day — the steps, the ridges, the colours, the wind — in one glorious ending.
Final Reflections
What a day this had been! Walking across 三峡龙脊 Three Gorges Dragon Ridge, 神女天路 Goddess Peak Sky Road, and 三峡之巅 Peak of the Three Gorges had been more than just another scenic hike.
It was the kind of day that reminds you about the quiet resilience inside us all. It was a reminder of the beauty of nature. It was a day of family — walking together, climbing step after step together. Of moments that will fill your memory long after the mountains are behind you.
Walking behind Mom and Dad, it was so touching to watch their determination and perseverance with each step. They never faltered, never grew impatient, they just kept climbing and walking.
There were moments to pause, of course — to take in the scenery, to share a laugh, a smile, a deep breath of mountain air. These are the moments I will treasure long after I can no longer see this mountain.
The views in Wushan are famous for a reason. The grandeur, the history, the natural beauty. It is one thing to see these scenes in photos or videos, but to stand among them, in person, is another thing entirely.
In autumn, all of this is taken to another level. The cliffs glow in the soft light. The leaves flame bright red and gold. The river ripples silently through the valley, like a living painting.

If you ever get a chance to visit Wushan in autumn, do it. I promise you will leave with your heart full of awe.
“没有比脚更长的路,没有比人更高的山。”
On this day, we walked both — and returned home, a little better for it.
