The Canopy at HortPark offers good food, lush greenery, and even an easy hike that’s suitable for families with young children.

On a recent weekend morning, we brought our daughter Yuyi for a short and easy hike at HortPark after stuffing ourselves silly with brunch. Instead of gulping down breakfast at home, we decided to lounge around and indulge ourselves at The Canopy HortPark for brunch first.

We ended up having one of those perfect lazy mornings that reminded us why Singapore’s green spaces are such a blessing.

Canopy HortPark Location

The Canopy is located inside HortPark, which lies along Alexandra Road. Conveniently located at the entrance of HortPark, The Canopy is super accessible if you’re planning to visit HortPark or link up to Southern Ridges afterwards.

HortPark also connects to Kent Ridge Park and Mount Faber Park via linked walkways and greenery. You could easily turn brunch at The Canopy into a half-day nature-filled outing.

Best of all, HortPark is one of the easiest parks to navigate with young kids in Singapore. Paths are wide, generally flat, and stroller-friendly.

First Impressions

Stepping foot into The Canopy HortPark gave us immediate garden café vibes.

Dark wood tables and chairs, hanging plants dangling from the ceiling, woven rattan lampshades, and plenty of natural light give this place a semi-industrial meets tropical garden theme. Light and airy. Exactly what you want before heading out on a hike.

Floor to ceiling glass windows overlooks a lawn and manicured greenery. Just looking at that view already sets it apart from your typical brunch spots.

Space isn’t cramped either. There’s a good mixture of indoor and semi-outdoor seating. We picked a table near the glass panes so Yuyi could gaze out at the greenery while we waited for our food.

Is The Canopy HortPark Good For Families?

The million-dollar question as parents.

The answer is yes.

Tables are spaced far enough so that even with a bulky stroller it does not feel cramped. Vibes are chill and laidback rather than sterile and uptight. You do not feel judged when your toddler talks extra loud.

For our brunch experience, Yuyi was comfortable throughout the entire meal. She even had enough space to stretch her legs without us feeling paranoid about bothering other diners.

The location also helps make things easier. Bored of your toddler? Head out to HortPark immediately after parking yourself.

Our Brunch Orders

Keep things simple with some classic brunch grub.

We ordered Crispy chicken & scambled eggs that came with toast, scrambled eggs, greens and what seemed like crispy fried chicken cutlet.

The toast was generously buttered and grilled nicely. The eggs were fluffy but not overly runny. To my amazed, Yuyi love those crispy chicken bites!

Another order is sausage and eggs consisted of sausage, sunny-side-up eggs, roasted potatoes, salad, and toast. Everything on the plate screamed brunch to me. Juicy sausages, flavorful roasted potatoes, sunny-side-up egg cooked just right with a fully cooked white and slightly runny yolk.

Food presentation was clean-cut and Instagram-worthy but not too contrived.

We also served complimentary ice water in a glass bottle. Bonus garden cafe points for making everything feel so effortlessly clean.

Food-wise, everything was good. Nothing mind-blowing. But then again we didn’t order anything too out-there. Traditional brunch plates done right before heading out for a leisurely stroll.

Ambience & Décor Review

Décor is by far one of The Canopy HortPark’s biggest selling points.

Plants are central to the theme. Hanging vines dangling from the ceiling, potted plants on the tables and seats, wood furnishings and neutral lighting keep everything looking cozy but open.

Not located in a hectic mall, we found the vibes to be calming. Despite other diners coming and going during brunch hours, it never felt suffocating.

If you value brunch spots in Singapore where you can actually hear your kid/yoga-date/friends talk, The Canopy HortPark works.

Space is intimate enough for couples or small families/kid groups without feeling claustrophobic.

After Brunch: Short Walk In HortPark With A Toddler

We wasted no time and proceeded into HortPark immediately after brunch.

This is where location is a blessing in disguise.

Perfect for short and easy hikes with young children, HortPark is paved with mostly-flat walking paths. There are themed gardens dotting the park, patches of open lawn, and sheltered walkways underneath.

Yuyi enjoyed walking around, pointing excitedly at random plants, and stretching her legs without any restrictions. It wasn’t much of a hike at all really. More like a relaxing stroll through Mother Nature.

Connect into Southern Ridges if you plan on hiking for longer. But with a toddler we kept things short and sweet.

A brunch at The Canopy HortPark followed by a slow walk around HortPark was the perfect combination for a Saturday activity in Singapore.

Service, Staff, & Waiting Time

Service was prompt and courteous.

Friendly staff that was neither rushing us nor taking forever to take our orders. Food also came within a reasonable waiting time considering we dined during brunch hours.

The entire place wasn’t crowded when we visited. Might be different when weekends roll around though. If you’re planning to visit during peak brunch hours, arriving earlier would avoid queuing for a table.

Our Verdict: Is The Canopy HortPark Worth Visiting?

Yes. For us it was.

Brunch isn’t always about eating the trendiest cafe dish. Sometimes it’s about how the overall experience makes you feel. Feeling satiated from a hearty brunch then walking straight into a nursery-full of greenery for a leisurely family hike made us feel rejuvenated.

As parents who live for convenience, being able to park ourselves, eat, then wander around in one central location was super helpful.

Both Yuyi and us had fun. Brunched enough to satiate our hungry tummies then had leisurely walk. We felt relaxed after our visit instead of feeling rushed.

That is how I would describe a perfect Saturday morning.
