Visiting the Jewel Rain Vortex Singapore: Tips, Photos & What to Expect

If you’re passing through Singapore or stopping in Singapore for a layover, there’s one spot nearly everyone says you need to visit: Jewel’s Rain Vortex.

When my family and I first visited Jewel’s Rain Vortex, I’ll admit I didn’t think much of it. I expected it to be little more than a typical “Instagram spot” you’d find at an airport mall. However, after seeing it in person (especially with the added effects of mist, rushing water, and that enormous glass dome above you), it honestly did give you a different vibe. It really does feel futuristic and calming and a little surreal, all at the same time.

A family moment at Singapore’s iconic Jewel Rain Vortex, one of the most impressive indoor attractions at Changi Airport.

My favorite surprise was how family-friendly and enjoyable it was. We visited with a stroller and several generations in tow, and although Jewel is known to be one of Singapore’s busiest attractions, it really didn’t feel overly crowded. With multiple levels to view the rain from, shaded covered walkways, air-conditioned seating areas to relax, and plenty of nearby dining options, you could even spend half a day here if you wanted to instead of just grabbing a few photos.

If you’re wondering about the Jewel Rain Vortex and whether or not it’s worth visiting, the best time to visit, how to avoid crowds, and what there is to actually DO at Jewel (besides taking pictures), read on to find out based on a family friendly trip!

What Is the Jewel Rain Vortex?

This giant indoor waterfall is known as The Jewel Rain Vortex, and it is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. Located inside Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore the falls cascade down roughly 40 metres from the center of the building.

The towering glass structure is called the Forest Valley. What’s unique about the falls isn’t just how tall they are. When you’re there, it almost feels like you’re inside of a rainforest.

Not only do you have the beautiful indoor waterfall but you are surrounded by indoor plants, elevated walkways, mist, restaurants, cafes and sunlight shining down from the enormous dome that houses the falls.

You don’t really get that cheesey tourism vibe from the rain vortex because it actually fits into the environment really well. One minute you’re shopping or getting a coffee, and the next you’re staring up at a giant waterfall surrounded by what feels like an indoor jungle.

Another cool thing is that it’s really stroller-friendly and not as stressful as a lot of touristy places with kids in Asia.

Our Family Visit to the Jewel Rain Vortex

We went during the day which I would recommend if you’d like to take it all in. Seeing the plants and architecture.

Sunlight filters through the dome creating such a gorgeous ambiance. Especially when the mist from the waterfall begins to float across the viewing balconies. Pictures also come out nicer because you can see the indoor forest so much better with daylight.

Speaking of views, something I loved right off the bat was how many vantage points there were. From right in front of the falls on the lower levels all the way up to the top floors where you can take wider shots of the entire building.

We were traveling with our little one in a stroller so easy access was important. Jewel has you covered. Elevators are accessible, pathways are wide, and there are lots of places to sit.

The sound of the falls can get overwhelming if you’re right up next to it but it’s more soothing than I would have thought. My daughter kept herself entertained by staring at the water and visitors for most of our visit.

Best Time to Visit the Jewel Rain Vortex

TIMING IS IMPORTANT.

For shorter lines and nicer pictures, visit at these times:

  • Morning
  • Late-morning (on weekdays)
  • Before nightfall (before dinner crowds)

Expect the biggest crowds mid-afternoon and on weekends. This coincides with school holiday and peak tourism seasons.

In my opinion, there are two “ideal times” to visit based on personal preference:

Morning/Daytime Visit

If you want:

  • Bright lighting
  • Better family/group photos
  • Visibility of the trees and foliage
  • A calmer mood

I prefer coming here in the daytime because you can actually see the glass dome and admire how the building was constructed around the indoor forest.

Night Visit

At night, the Rain Vortex becomes less about nature and more of a light show. There are multi-coloured lights and projections which give the place a whole new vibe.

It has more of a dramatic, movie-like atmosphere. But it is also much more crowded.

As a recommendation, if you’re visiting Singapore for the first time, I think it’s cool to see it once during the day and once at night.

Is the Jewel Rain Vortex Free?

Entrance to the Rain Vortex itself is free.

That’s partially why it’s become such a popular tourist and local attraction.

You can walk around the viewing areas for free. Granted Jewel has pay attractions nearby too such as:

  • Canopy Park
  • Hedge Maze
  • Mirror Maze
  • Sky Nets

…but just seeing the waterfall and indoor rainforest is completely free.

For budget travellers this makes Jewel one of Singapore’s best free attractions.

How to Get to Jewel Changi Airport

Jewel is connected to Singapore Changi Airport directly.

If you are arriving into Singapore by plane, accessing Jewel could not be easier. Walk or take the airport shuttle depending on which terminal you arrive at.

Arriving from the city:

By MRT

Simply take the train to Changi Airport Station and follow the signs to Jewel. The walkway connection is very simple and clearly marked.

Probably the easiest option if you’re with family and have lots of luggage/strollers. There are dedicated taxi/Grab drop off points located right outside Jewel.

By Car

Parking is available but tends to be congested during peak periods on weekends.

Best Photo Spots at the Rain Vortex

The Jewel Rain Vortex is surprisingly family-friendly, with stroller-accessible walkways and beautiful indoor garden views.

If you’re trying to take good pictures here are my favorites:

Level 1 Front Facing

This allows you to take that quintessential head on view of the waterfall.

Everyone crowds around this side because it is iconic.

Upper Level Balconies

These were underrated.

You can see the waterfall, plants, and dome all together for a wide view.

Off to the sides by the forest valley

These views gave you that natural feel as there were less people. Plants also framed the waterfall really well.

One thing I really liked was how you could take pictures all around the place and not have to heavily edit them. There was great lighting + greenery!

Tips for Visiting With Kids

Things I’d recommend having after stopping by with a toddler:

Stroller

Jewel is huge and kids can get tired easily.

Luckily everything is stroller-accessible.

Prepare to do some walking.

Don’t get me wrong – everything is accessible but you will be walking a decent amount going back and forth between attraction viewings and restaurants. Shoes with comfortable shoes are a lifesaver.

Utilize the family facilities.

Baby changing stations and family facilities are clean and well-signposted.

Singapore does a great job in general with family facilities so Jewel is no exception.

Drink water.

It’s air-conditioned but Singapore humidity still sneaks up on you if you’re traveling between terminals/transportation that’s outdoors.

Is the Jewel Rain Vortex Worth Visiting?

Yes. Definitely.

Even after looking at hundreds of pictures online prior to visiting it was still cool to see in person.

The Rain Vortex is unique because of more than just the waterfall. The entire ambiance is what stands out to me. The architecture, plants, natural lighting, mist, and ease of having it at an airport all come together to make something very memorable.

If you are in and out of the airport it is hands down one of the coolest airport activities in the world.

If you are a tourist in Singapore looking for a place to visit for half of a day, couples will have fun, solo travellers will have fun, and families will have fun.

Even as a local, I still enjoy going there multiple times.

Final Thoughts on Visiting the Jewel Rain Vortex

Singapore is full of iconic attractions you don’t want to miss. One that might not be on your radar is the Jewel Rain Vortex. After seeing it for myself, I’d argue it’s worth visiting Singapore just to experience this.

Rain Vortex stole my heart because it was refreshingly hassle-free. Getting there with kids, navigating through the city, parking, trekking to a famous destination – these are things that can suck the joy out of seeing an attraction.

At Jewel, there was no hassle. Literally everyone can enjoy Rainbow. Your family can walk around, grab a bite to eat, lounge, take photos and people watch. It’s all indoor anyways so you don’t even have to worry about the weather.

Singapore airport itself can get overwhelming. But inside Jewel, it was relaxing. Even my kids forgot we were inside the world’s busiest airport.

For anyone transiting through Singapore, allow a couple of hours for Jewel. Don’t treat it as an airport pit-stop.

The views from Rain Vortex were everything I saw in photos AND more.

Trust me. It’s better in person.
