The first thing I learned when visiting Guangzhou was that there’s no definitive “best” shopping area. Each district has a totally different feel depending on what you want to purchase.

Top on my list, we have this beautiful and fun street, all around you the buildings and architecture are made with the most beautiful traditional Cantonese style architecture, the classic Lingnan type with multistory houses and buildings. All around you as you are shopping, it is as if history is written all over the structures you are gazing at. In addition to the amazing architecture in Shangxiajiu, there is more on offer for the culture vulture in you. Lingnan culture is imbedded into the way of life, and you can see influences in the way the food is prepared to the local folk customs along the walkway as you shop.

On this street, you will find hundreds of amazing restaurants and street vendors as you walk around. This is a must visit while shopping in Guangzhou and at every corner as you go along there will always be something new to try and as many amazing and delicious choices to eat that you will never be disappointed.

Beijing Road Shopping Area ( 北京西路 ) is one of those places in Guangzhou you must not miss when you come here for a vacation, business or any other reason. From my own personal experience, this busy and bustling shopping street is a great place to go if you want a happy combination of both modern retail outlets and local stores. Beijing Road shopping area is just about as perfect as it gets for those of you out there that are in the market for both global brands or shopping for something different, unique and local.

To tell you the truth, one of the things that I just love about this Beijing Road shopping area is that it has a real sense of history about it. The best part about the shopping area is that in amongst all the hustle and bustle, there are old glass display covers on the ground where you can clearly see ancient stone road ways from over 1,000 years ago. When you are shopping and people watching, Beijing Road shopping area is a great place to explore and be entertained with not only the local inhabitants of Guangzhou and their customs but with some of the amazing Song and Yuan dynasty artifacts that are just there, right beneath your feet.

The shopping is pretty incredible to say the least and for me, it is some of the best shopping around in the city of Guangzhou. From large department stores to smaller local boutiques and shops you can find almost anything you may be after whether it be the latest fashion, cool and new electronics or even some traditional Chinese handicrafts and items to take home with you.

One of my favorite parts of Beijing Road is wandering around in the local shops trying to find local hidden gems. You know, the kind of souvenirs and gifts that really have a real Cantonese feel to them. It’s all here if you take the time to look.

It also doesn’t stop there with the amazing food choices that Guangzhou offers, Beijing Road is a great place to satisfy your foodie self. With plenty of street vendors and food hawkers to keep you satisfied with deliciously different snacks and savories as well as sweet and yummy pastries, it would take me a lifetime to try all of the best local snacks that Beijing Road offers, but I do know for sure that I will be going back one day for another.

Tianhe District CBD Shopping Circle

The Tianhe District CBD Shopping Circle is undoubtedly some of the most modern shopping you will come across when you are out and about in Guangzhou. One of my favorite areas of Guangzhou to visit has to be Tianhe District. With its large selection of high-end brands and luxury shopping malls, this part of Guangzhou is packed with cosmopolitan and international appeal. Visiting Tianhe District for me is always a must when I go to Guangzhou as it really is a shopper’s paradise when you combine everything the district has to offer in the way of retail with some of the amazing skyscrapers that you can go shopping in.

One of the things that really does make this shopping district so special is that, with Tianhe District, you really do have a little bit of everything all in one place. If you want to start big, then head over to Taikoo Hui. This huge luxury shopping mall will have you spoilt for choice with international top of the range brands. Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel are all there and if you really like to splash the cash while out shopping, these are some of the best places to do so in the city of Guangzhou. One thing that I really like about this mall is that it really does have an art gallery type of feel and aesthetic to it. The design is elegant, refined and really nice and this means that even if you aren’t there to shop or to splurge on the top designer fashion, this is one of those places that you can just wander around and take in the nice ambiance and shop window shop.

You do, of course, have a completely different experience in another of the large malls here in the district such as Grandview Mall or TeeMall. As mentioned a few paragraphs earlier I really like these two malls, they are completely different from the high end luxury of the Taikoo Hui mall, packed with shops selling all of the latest fashion as well as being an electronics mecca and offering great dining and entertainment choices. What is so special for me about Grandview Mall and TeeMall is that they are such accessible places to shop and full of choice. I have found really great brands at both of these malls that are international and offer quality fashion at much more affordable prices.

Brands such as Uniqlo and H&M are great places to pick up some cool fashion and at the same time both of these malls also offer some really great local Chinese stores. The great thing about shopping for local Chinese fashion and retail is that you can find some great affordable street wear as well as some very unique accessories. As I mentioned a couple of paragraphs earlier, the Grandview Mall and TeeMall are both really affordable places to shop in style while in Guangzhou. If you are on a budget but still want to look great while you shop, both of these malls are perfect and really can’t be beaten.

China Plaza

China Plaza was one of those shopping areas and malls in Guangzhou that offers me something new every time. China Plaza is one of those destinations that is a real gem when it comes to shopping, perfect for tourists and locals alike. Whenever I am in the mood for some retail therapy but don’t want to splash too much cash, one of my first places to think of is China Plaza. This is a really big multilevel shopping mall which has a great mix of old and new with local boutiques and cool and trendy fashion stores. It also has tons of entertainment options and ways to keep you and the whole family happy and occupied for hours.

China Plaza is great for one simple reason and that is that it is so accessible, this place is not just for the big spenders and luxury shoppers. It is a place that is for the everyday shopper such as you and me and people like you and me. People who are looking for affordable fashion, cool accessories and the latest gadgets and gizmos but who don’t want to have to go all the way into some of the more upmarket and luxury malls. The fashion is really cool too and something that I have always enjoyed about this place is how I have found some of my favorite wardrobe pieces and some of my staple items. This shopping mall has some really great stores and they are made up of a good balance of international brands and also local Chinese designers. It is also the perfect place for me to head when I want to come across unique styles that you just can’t find anywhere else in the shopping malls of Guangzhou.

Hualin Jade Market

A great shopping destination in Guangzhou is the Hualin Jade Market, if you are in to unique jewelry and collectables or just like to go shopping around local markets and come across something different. For me, every time I visit the Hualin Jade Market it feels like a treat and the best way I can think to describe it is as if I am walking into a giant treasure trove of beautifully handcrafted jade, gemstones and traditional Chinese jewelry.

As mentioned a couple of paragraphs back, this is one of the largest jade trading centers in the country of China. This market in the center of Guangzhou is a place which has been a huge favorite with jade collectors for many decades. This is a labyrinth of hundreds upon hundreds of stalls with every vendor selling jade pieces of all types and sizes. You could be looking for something simple like a jade pendant or maybe you would rather see some of the larger, more elaborate, and truly handcrafted items, either way you will find something to suit you. I personally really like to take my time as I wander around the stalls, speaking with vendors and finding out more about the different pieces, but more importantly for me, finding out the history and the culture behind the beautiful jade.

A special thing about this market is that you are never stuck for choice and the variety of jade here is second to none. You can find jade in all different colors and sizes, each individual piece with its own unique shade and color as well as each stone carrying a special meaning to it. Some of the jade pieces will be lighter green in color, while others can be darker green or even white, and each will mean something completely different. You don’t even have to be in the market for buying jade or any of the other items, this is also a great place to just wander around as well and take in all of the incredible craftsmanship of each and every piece for free.

Gangding Computer and Digital Product Shopping Circle

If you are looking for one stop shop when it comes to anything and everything electronic, well then this is the place to make a stop when you are out and about in the Guangzhou area. I really like what makes Gangding special and that is that, when you visit here, you are not just going into another shopping mall, but you will have entered an entire district, one that is buzzing with electronic shops, vendors, stores and everything that goes with shopping and buying all types of tech. This for me, is one of the most convenient areas when I go shopping for electronics and the best part for me is that it’s also all in one place.

In Gangding when you go shopping, you will have no problem browsing and comparing all the different brands, products and models all in one place. If you are a hunter and gatherer when it comes to shopping, hunting down the latest technology, here is your place in Guangzhou. This place will have everything you could want if you are in the market for that new phone, a new computer or gaming system or if you are just in the market for a replacement part for your old laptop, here in Gangding you will find everything and most of the time, the prices are very good.

One of my favorite things when I come here is the sense of adventure that comes from wandering around the different shops and stores. From the larger retail stores all the way to the smaller, hole in the wall type stores selling all those hard to find or niche products, there is something here for everyone. If you are an aficionado of custom built PCs then you are in the right place, because here in Gangding you will be able to find everything you could possibly want in that area. You will find everything right from the high end graphics cards and processors to the best cooling systems and cases and to top it off, you can always get advice and help from some of the shop owners who really know their stuff.

Taikoo Hui Shopping Mall

Situated in the heart of Tianhe District, Taikoo is one of the most prosperous and affluent luxury business area in the city of Guanghzhou. The mall is located in the same complex with the top luxury hotel in Guangzhou, Mandarin Oriental Hotel. This luxury mall is over 138,000 square meters of flooring space houses over 180 high end brands including a wide array of sophisticated lifestyle boutiques, restaurants with an exquisite cuisines to offer and several internationally acclaimed brands that have set up their flagship stores here in TaiKoo.

From the moment you set foot into Taikoo Hui, it is pretty clear that this isn’t just another shopping mall but it is also the definition of a lifestyle destination in itself. It starts with the architecture itself, as soon as you walk through the doors, you will be greeted by its sleek modern design, high soaring ceilings and a contemporary edge to everything. The whole aesthetic and feel of Taikoo is one of exclusivity and refinement and it all matches perfectly to the range of luxury brands that are also housed here in the shopping mall. It is also a really refreshing change for me from all the other areas that I love to shop in and it is a really serene and polished environment that lends itself to the perfect location for a leisurely shopping spree.

The first thing that sets Taikoo Hui apart and what makes this such a special place to shop is just the range of luxury fashion brands available here. For those of you who love your designer labels, this is the place to be. This shopping mall houses some of the global luxury giants such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada and Hermes. When I have visited, I have found the stores here are all beautifully curated. Each store is its own individual oasis where you can shop through the latest collection of designs in a relaxed and elegant atmosphere. Even if you are just window shopping, looking for style inspiration, it is an indulgent experience from start to finish.

Antique Xiguan Street

For you antiquers and painting collectors, this is the place to go, this is the only approved relic artifacts antiques market operator and the number 1 to 10 antique markets in the whole of china. The total area of Antique Xiguan Street is approximately 8553 square meters which consists of a row of people pawning their items on their own windows or from the backs of their own trucks.

The street is lined with what looks like an eclectic and messy array of shops, but believe me when I say that each one is a real treasure trove of antiques, collectables, vintage items and anything you can really think of that will tickle your fancy. Whether you are a serious collector or if you just want to buy some nice souvenirs and gifts, you will never be short of something new to see and find.

One of the things I love most about this Antique Xiguan Street in Guangzhou is the incredible diversity of antiques and curiosities. You can go along here and find some really beautiful and old fashioned Ming and Qing dynasty furniture, old porcelain, intricately carved woodwork and carvings and of course some really nice old jade pieces, bronze ware and artifacts as well as vintage jewelry. I have also spent hours upon hours wandering around these shops marveling at the quality of craftsmanship in every item that was being displayed as well as chatted with some of the vendors as they also love to tell you the stories and share with you the history behind their goods as they have often been passed down for generations.

The thrill of the treasure hunt is always half the fun when you come here, you just never know what you might come across, I have even stumbled upon some rare and hidden treasures amongst the more common items on offer.

Zhujiang Luxury Malls

The first of the three luxury shopping malls in the city center of Guangzhou can be found nestled in one of the most prestigious areas of Guangzhou which is Zhujiang New Town, known not only for its modern skyline and upscale atmosphere but also for its stunning array of luxury shopping malls. I have to say that for me, every time I visit Zhujiang and all of these luxury shopping malls, I am always struck by the elegance, and sophistication of the whole district. If you are a Guangzhou local or just a visitor and you want to know where the city’s elite go when they are out and about to shop, dine or simply indulge in the finer things in life then Zhujiang is where you will find it all.

I had to start the list of shopping malls here in Guangzhou with a truly must see and must do when you are out and about and that is IFC Mall, short for International Finance Center Mall. To be blunt, this place is a work of art in and of itself, it’s hard to over exaggerate just how grandiose this place is. As soon as you step inside you are greeted by modern, sleek interiors with really high soaring ceilings and floors that are tiled with polished marble. This really is the epitome of luxury shopping as you walk into this stunning mall with it’s curated selection of luxury brands from all around the world. The international fashion icons really are all represented here and housed in really beautifully designed stores to match the exclusivity and the brands themselves. If you are out hunting for that perfect designer handbag or are simply just out for a spot of window shopping as you browse and search for some style inspiration, this is just an indulgent experience all the way.
