Why Stay in Harbin?

Harbin can feel like a foreign country within China. Walking the streets of the old town can almost make you think you’re in Eastern Europe. There are onion-domed churches, Russian bakeries, and wide boulevards that you won’t see anywhere else in China.

Harbin is magical during the winter months. Temperatures can easily reach below -20°c, but the snow covered trees and lit-up ice sculptures are sure to amaze you. If you plan on visiting during high season, make sure to book your hotels well in advance.

For first time travelers, here are some of the best districts to stay in:

  • Zhongyang Street (中央街) – For sights, shopping, and food
  • Songbei District (松北区) – For Ice and Snow World
  • Nangang District (南岗区) – For business hotels and transportation
  • Qunli District (浓桥区) – For quiet, modern hotels

When it comes to luxury hotels in Harbin, Shangri- La Harbin is consistently one of the safest bets. I love the riverside location, as it gives you excellent views of the Songhua River. In winter time the entire river is frozen over and it almost feels like a movie set.

Rooms are spacious and warm. Warm rooms become incredibly important after being outside in freezing temperatures all day. The breakfast selection also receives high marks from guests who enjoy both Chinese and Western breakfast items.

Best Time to Visit Harbin

Harbin is primarily visited during the winter months by international tourists. December through February sees the Ice Festival activities available.

However, if you want snow on the ground and to experience everything “winterish”, January will likely be the busiest.

If you are interested in cheaper hotel rates and less crowded venues, visit at the end of February or beginning of March. There is a good chance you’ll still see snow and you’ll avoid the highest prices of the year.

Summer is actually enjoyable in Harbin as well. It’s nice and cool here, unlike many parts of China.

Tips for Booking Hotels in Harbin

Book in advance for Ice Festival period

Book in advance if possible, especially if you’re looking for luxury or family friendly hotels.

Location is king

The winters can get very cold. You’ll want to be as close to points of interest or metro stations so that you won’t have to walk too far outside.

Look up heating reviews

Having consistent heat inside can be very important during Harbin winters.

Consider airport transfers

Snow can slow things down, so keep that in mind when planning transportation from the airport.

Final Thoughts

Harbin ranks among China’s most unique cities from a visual perspective. Want a luxurious riverside hotel? How about boutique hotels near the famed “Old Streets”? Looking for a budget hotel to explore the sites from? Harbin has a surprisingly robust collection of choices.

Were I choosing hotels for a first visit, I’d likely go half and half depending on travel style:

Luxury: Ritz-Carlton Harbin, JW Marriott Hotel Harbin River North
Walking distance: Mercure Harbin Central Street Sophia Church
Budget: Ibis Harbin Central Street Hotel
Family: Wanda Realm Harbin

Regardless of where you choose to stay in Harbin you’ll have a travel experience unlike most other places in Asia.
