Guangzhou is an intimidating city to visit. It is sprawling, fast-paced, and massive. For most travelers, knowing where to stay to best enjoy Guangzhou is the most important aspect of your trip to figure out.
Once you have that nailed down, pretty much everything else about the city clicks into place and your travel experience becomes much easier.
Guangzhou is a place that works well for foodies, shoppers, business travelers, and families that want a comfortable base to visit all the main attractions. Viewing a nice skyline from your window is a secondary consideration to being able to walk to a convenient metro station. Booking the perfect hotel in the wrong neighborhood can cost you a full hour of your day in travel time. And in a city with 24-hour service, that is a long time.
In this post, I am going to break down the best places to stay in Guangzhou based on common travel scenarios, not inflated online reviews. I will also tell you where we would stay as a family and the compromises we made to arrive at that decision.

Best Time to Visit Guangzhou
Guangzhou is best visited during October to December, when temperatures are more mild and the humidity is lower. Sightseeing is far more pleasant during these months. Springtime (March-May) is also a great time to visit Guangzhou. Though rainy days will occur, parks and gardens are beautiful. Summer months (June-September) are hot and humid with temperatures almost always above 33° C. Those not used to tropical climates will find themselves fatigued from sightseeing very easily. If you are planning a trip to Guangzhou during the Canton Fair, make sure to reserve your hotel well in advance. Hotels near the fairgrounds located in Tianhe, Pazhou and Zhujiang New Town tend to book up early and raise their prices considerably.
Best Areas to Stay in Guangzhou (Quick Overview)
Tianhe District
Best for: first-time visitors, shopping, food, and easy metro access
Yuexiu District
Best for: sightseeing, history, and “classic Guangzhou” attractions
Pazhou
Best for: Visiting Canton Fair
Zhujiang New Town (CBD)
Best for: families, modern comfort, newer and higher-end hotels, green space, malls
Tianhe District – Best for First-Time Visitors & Shopping
Tianhe is the practical choice for the majority of people visiting Guangzhou for the first time. It is modern, bustling, and has the best metro access of any area in the city.
The Tianhe district has the most variety of hotel and apartment options at a range of price points. Staying in this neighborhood is the least risky choice.
If you are not going to be sightseeing, but will be shopping and eating for the majority of your time, Tianhe should be your area of choice.
Attractions in Guangzhou are not in the Tianhe district. However, Tianhe is well-connected by public transport to the rest of the city.
Metrolines 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 14, 15, 16, 21, and 22 all run through Tianhe and intersect with one another.
Metrolines also lead to all of the major attractions. Opting to stay in Tianhe, you get direct, easy transfers. Opting to stay in Yuexiu or Haizhu, you will have at least one transfer and longer travel times.
Areas to consider in Tianhe
- Baiyun Road
- Chengxi
- Huacheng
- Huadi
- Liuhua
- Pingzhou
- Tianhe Zong (城市南环)
- Wanbao
If time is of the essence, it is important to get off at one of the metro interchanges as your hotel. Any metro station that is more than a five-minute walk from an interchange will result in significant travel delays and lost time.
Huacheng and Chengxi, for example, may seem close to Tianhe Square on a map, but metro transfers to other lines can take more than ten minutes each way.
Tianhe is best for
- First-time visitors who want convenience
- Travelers that are interested in shopping and dining
- Shorter stays where time efficiency is important

Yuexiu District – Best for Sightseeing & Cultural Exploration
Yuexiu is the heart of Guangzhou. If your trip to Guangzhou will be centered on culture, attractions, and walking distances, this district feels the most like “old Guangzhou.”
Yuexiu District has all of the historical sights like Yuexiu Park, Five Rams Statue, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, and old street alleys and architecture. Compared to Tianhe, the Yuexiu district feels slower and more residential, especially in the morning.
The trade-off for staying in Yuexiu is that hotel rooms will be a bit older and noisier. Some streets are a bit rougher as well. Metro coverage is good, but the stations are not as close together as in Tianhe.
The Yuexiu district is best for
- Sightseeing-centric trips
- Travelers that are interested in history and culture
- Those who prefer a traditional city vibe over new development
Areas to consider in Yuexiu
- Changle Road
- Huacheng Road
- Haizhu
- Huanjiang
- Jiefangbei
- Liuhua
- Liuhuashan
- Shiqiao
- Wenchang
- Xiangshuiwan
- Yuhuatai
- Yuexiu
- Zhenlian
Yuexiu is best for
- Sightseeing-focused trips
- Travelers interested in culture and history
- Visitors who prefer a more traditional city atmosphere
Zhujiang New Town – Best for Families & Modern Comfort
Zhujiang New Town is in Tianhe but could be considered its own neighborhood.
It is the modern CBD of Guangzhou. The streets are wider, the buildings are newer, the atmosphere is calmer, and the sidewalks are much easier to navigate if you are pushing a stroller.
If you are visiting Guangzhou with a family, Zhujiang New Town should be at the top of your list. It is a comfortable district to stay in with lots of parks and green space to explore.
Accommodation is on the pricier side of the spectrum. This is especially true if you are seeking a budget or mid-range hotel or apartment.
Zhujiang New Town is best for
- Families traveling with children
- Travelers who prefer newer and nicer hotels
- Travelers who want a quieter base but remain in the city center
Areas to consider in Zhujiang New Town
- Guangzhou East Railway Station
- Guangzhou Train Depot
- Huanshi
- Jinzhou
- Jinniu
- Liuhua
- Zhongshan
- Zhujiang New Town
Zhujiang New Town is best for
- Families with children
- Travelers who prefer newer hotels
- Travelers who value a quieter atmosphere
Pazhou – Best for the Canton Fair
Pazhou isn’t somewhere most leisure travellers visit, but we mention it because it’s arguably the best district to stay in if you’re visiting the Canton Fair.
Situated on the banks of the Pearl River, Pazhou is host to the gigantic Canton Fair Complex. Thousands of business travellers descend on the area during fair weeks to be within walking distance.
During non-fair weeks, Pazhou can feel slightly deserted compared to Tianhe or Yuexiu. There are plenty of new hotels, restaurants and shopping centres, but it’s not quite as “visitor-friendly”.
That being said, if you’re not visiting for the Canton Fair, we’d suggest sticking to Tianhe or Zhujiang New Town. However, if you’re visiting for the fair itself, staying in Pazhou can save you an hour or more on your commute each day.
Where We Would Stay (Personal Angle)
If we had another opportunity to visit Guangzhou as a family, we would consider staying in Zhujiang New Town or a quiet neighborhood of Tianhe close to a metro interchange.
With a kid, the biggest factors for us are how walkable the area is, hotel room size, and transport access. Zhujiang New Town just feels a little less hectic, especially after a full day out in the city.
The parks and green spaces make a real difference with a child in tow.
If we had to choose between Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town, Tianhe would be our second pick. As long as the hotel is next to a metro interchange and not on top of one of the large shopping malls, Tianhe is hard to beat on value and convenience.
We would avoid staying very far south of Haizhu or in deep suburban areas for long.
It can be difficult to get around and spend time in the city center if you have a long commute each way. In Guangzhou, it is location over hotel rating almost every time.
Areas We Would Avoid Staying In
Guangzhou is a safe city. Most parts are a lot more convenient than others though.
We wouldn’t suggest staying around Baiyun International Airport unless you have an early flight. Hotels around there are comfortable enough but far from central Guangzhou.
Hotels around the outer Panyu District should only be considered if you plan on spending a lot of time at Chimelong Safari Park or Chimelong Paradise. Getting into central Guangzhou for sightseeing can become exhausting.
Hotel prices may be cheaper in the more remote suburban districts but you’ll spend more money (and time) getting into town.
If you’re looking for a convenient area for most visitors, try to stay somewhere near Metro Lines 1, 3 or 5.
Getting Around Guangzhou
The standout winner when it comes to visiting Guangzhou has got to be the metro system. The Guangzhou Metro is super clean, cheap and goes to almost every tourist attraction, shopping centre and train station you can think of.
If you’re staying anywhere in Tianhe, Yuexiu or Zhujiang New Town you’ll pretty much never need to take a taxi.
Metro Line 3 is fantastic as it runs from the airport to Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town. Line 1 will get you to a lot of Guangzhou’s historic sites and Line 5 connects some of the city’s most popular districts.
Use DiDi (China’s Uber) if your accommodation isn’t near a metro station. It’s cheap and reliable. There are also lots of traditional taxis but make sure you write your destination in Chinese.
When booking our accommodation we always tried to be within five minutes of a metro station over saving a couple dollars on the room.
Average Hotel Prices by Area
Hotel prices vary throughout the year, particularly during the Canton Fair. As a rough guide, here’s what you can expect to pay.
| Area | Budget | Mid-range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tianhe | US$50–90 | US$100–180 | From US$250 |
| Yuexiu | US$40–80 | US$80–150 | From US$220 |
| Zhujiang New Town | US$80–120 | US$180–280 | From US$350 |
| Pazhou | US$80–140 | US$180–250 | From US$300 |
*Booking early can often save a substantial amount, especially during major trade fairs and public holidays.
Tips for Choosing Accommodation in Guangzhou
- Metro access is a must. Ideally you should be within five minutes of a metro station by foot and close to one of the main lines (1, 3, or 5).
- Be cautious of certain areas. Some hotels in Yuexiu, Tianhe, and Haizhu will say “Tianhe District” but be very far from major transport hubs or main lines.
- Read the listing carefully and always double check the actual metro station and travel time to other areas.
- Hotel stars matter less than distance from your metro station. A one-star hotel next to Line 3 will beat a four-star hotel on the other side of the city any day of the week.
- Avoid areas very far south of Haizhu or deep suburban neighborhoods. Even if the hotel is nice and cheap, it will be more difficult to explore the city.
- If you are a family traveling with young children, try and stay in newer buildings. Elevators, room sizes, and sound insulation are noticeably better.
Final Thoughts
Picking the best neighbourhood might have more impact on your trip to Guangzhou than upgrading to that fancier hotel. Guangzhou’s metro system is incredibly convenient, but being in the right location can save you time stuck on public transit and give you more time enjoying Guangzhou’s culinary marvels, shopping and attractions.
If you ask us, Tianhe District is still the best bet for most travelers. Tianhe has the best transportation links, and is home to some of Guangzhou’s best shopping malls, restaurants, and highest rated modern hotels. If you’re traveling with kids, you might want the quieter atmosphere and newer hotels of Zhujiang New Town. History buffs might want to stay in Yuexiu District so you can be closer to Guangzhou’s historic sights.
No matter where you end up staying, make sure you’re within walking distance to a metro station. At the sprawling size of Guangzhou, convenience is worth sacrificing that cheaper hotel room or hotel star.
