On this hiking adventure, we saw some of the most incredible views in Chongqing and all over China. It was part challenge, part pilgrimage, and all rewarding.

What Is the Three Gorges Summit (三峡之巅)?
The Three Gorges Summit (三峡之巅, Sanxia Zhiding) in Wushan is one of the most famous high-altitude viewing routes that offer scenic overlooks above the Wu Gorge section of the Yangtze River. This hiking route in Wushan County, Chongqing features spectacular views of cliffs and peaks along the sides of the river as well as close-up views of Wushan’s distinctive cliffs and the river’s many twists and turns.
The Three Gorges Summit hike is one of the core sections of the “Three Gorges Landscape Belt” and is well-known for:
- Unobstructed views of the Yangtze River from a high, near-vertical cliff
- Close-up views of Wushan’s signature peaks, including some facing Goddess Peak (神女峰)
- Stone paved hiking paths, but it is quite physically demanding
- Ideal photo spots at key viewing points, steps, and along ridgelines
- Beautiful autumn red leaves in late fall, which is the best time to hike this route
Many hikers and visitors say this is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Three Gorges region.
Hiking Experience
We went on this hike during late autumn, when there were the most beautiful colors in all the trees. The golden sunlight mixed with the soft morning mist and the fiery red leaves created a mystical background for our hike.
A Leisurely Start, Then a Steeper Ascent
We began the hike at a leisurely pace, strolling along the stone path with no problem. The air was cool and fresh but comfortable.
As we moved higher into the mountains, the scenery also gradually shifted from level ground to hill steps, rocky edges, and winding pathways that required a bit more focus, especially with the hiking poles.
On the trail, we passed by some of the iconic landmarks and markers that you will also see along the Three Gorges Summit hike, including “六十六道拐 (66 Turns)” which is a well-known stretch of very steep hiking switchbacks that many hikers pause just to gaze at in awe of the view… and the physical effort to get there!
Impressive Views of Wu Gorge and the Yangtze River
A few minutes later, the view opened up once more: gigantic mountains that rose straight up out of the river, a series of blue ridges on the mountain layer that seemed to fade into the sky, and boats that crept slowly through the river curves below.

Nicole’s dad especially loved pointing out each ridgeline and photo viewpoint, while her mum took time to fully enjoy the quiet at each stop.
In a way, these were some of the most special parts of the hike, because we had a chance to slow down and really breathe, stop and take stock. It was like a very rare chance to pause and look within.

The reflections in the small pond on the day we were there made the spot extra magical.
“66 Turns” Stone Marker
For many hikers, this is a fun and memorable point to document the journey with a photo.
Cliff Path That Runs Beside the Yangtze River
One of the most memorable sections of this hike is a narrow but very safe stretch where hikers get an unbeatable view of the Yangtze River as it snakes gently around the mountains.
How Hard Is the Hike?
We completed half of this route in about four hours. The overall level of difficulty is moderate, but some parts—like stair climbing and ridge edges—are more physically demanding.

I think we did great throughout the hike, pacing ourselves and taking rest whenever needed. The hiking poles were a big help.

The best seasons to hike the Three Gorges Summit include:

- March – April for spring greenery and mild temperatures
- In the morning for the soft light and low fog that makes for very dramatic scenery
- It is best to avoid the rainy days when the stone paths are more slippery.

Three Gorges Summit (三峡之巅) is located in Wushan County, Chongqing.
From Wushan County Town
Taxi or private car: about 30–40 minutes
Park shuttle buses from designated visitor centers are also available
From Chongqing City
Take the high-speed rail to Wushan (about 3 hours) then taxi transfer
Or you can join a Yangtze River cruise that includes Wushan tour extensions
Entrance & Tickets
Purchase your tickets at the scenic area’s official entrance point or online platforms. Visitor traffic is well-managed with clear signposts.
