Instead of your typical recumbent Buddha you might see elsewhere in Asia, this feels more like a scene in a longer storyline. Other shorter carvings are on the same cliff face.

The Thousand-Hand Guanyin

When I first laid eyes on the Thousand-Hand Guanyin, I am fasinated

Once you’re standing in front of it, you can’t help but appreciate just how detailed this sculpture truly is. Guanyin is the Bodhisattva of compassion, so it makes sense that his hands reach out in all directions.

Exploring the Six Realms of Reincarnation at Dazu

You’ll also find some incredible artwork depicting the Buddhist concept of samsara. Known as the Six Realms of Reincarnation, there are carvings that showcase heaven, human life, animals, hungry ghosts, hell beings, and finally the Strolling Dead.

All of these realms were meant to teach cause and effect when it came to morality.

Strolling along the pathways at Beishan, you’ll notice many of the statues are in high relief. Similar to Baodingshan, there is wonderful storytelling, but I found it to be more subtle at Beishan.

Getting to Dazu from downtown Chongqing takes about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic.

You can catch a high-speed train from Chongqing West Railway Station to Dazu South Station. Long distance buses and private cars are other options too. We recommend booking a full-day guided tour if you don’t speak Chinese. This is the most convenient way to get there and back, plus you’ll have an English-speaking guide to help you explore.

When to Visit Dazu Rock Carvings

Spring (March-May) and Fall (Sept-Nov) are the ideal times to visit Dazu Rock Carvings. Summer in Chongqing can be brutal. Hot and humid is an understatement. Winter isn’t as nice either since it can get quite dreary.

I visited Dazu during the summer and absolutely loved it, but some travelers might find the weather too uncomfortable. If you have flexibility with your travel dates, I’d plan your visit to Dazu outside of the summer months.

As far as what time of day to go, morning arrivals are best. There will be less people around when you visit, and the sunlight isn’t as harsh.

Tickets & Opening Hours for Dazu Rock Carvings

Ticket prices will fluctuate depending on the time of year and if you buy a combo ticket that includes multiple areas. Hours are typically 9- or 10 AM to 5 PM. Since this is a UNESCO Heritage Site, there are rules that visitors must abide by.

For example, don’t touch the carvings and flash photography might not be permitted.
