Chongqing Art Gallery: Is It Worth Visiting?

The first time I entered the plaza outside of Chongqing Art Gallery I’ll admit that I stopped and stared.

You’ll know what I mean when you see it. Bright red beams defy gravity stacked upon each other in a technicolor-block display of organized chaos. Perched high above Chongqing’s crowded cityscape, you can’t miss it. Impossible to forget. Iconically Chinese. Futuristically modern.

Is visiting Chongqing Art Gallery worth it for travelers? If you’re trying to decide whether to add it to your China itinerary, this guide is going to tell you everything you need to know. PLUS: you’ll get the real scoop from me so you can decide if you actually want to go.

Often called the Chongqing Art Museum, this modern art gallery in downtown Chongqing showcases rotating exhibitions of local and national Chinese art.

Inside you’ll find traditional-style paintings as well as sculptures and mixed media pieces.

The artwork does tend to be more modern than historical and it usually consists of things like paintings, sculptures, and sometimes interactive art.

Keep in mind that they change exhibitions every few months so your experience may vary slightly depending on what they’re showcasing when you visit.

Truthfully, the art gallery isn’t why you come here.

To see The Architecture

The outside of the gallery looks like something out of a child’s block-building phase; giant pieces of cubes stacked on top of each other leaning at impossible angles.

It’s inspired by traditional Chinese architecture with interlocking wooden beams supporting ancient temples.

Except, these beams aren’t wood. The structure is made from steel painted bright red.

Every angle gives you a new view:

  • Walking toward the front, you see a large cube
  • Staring up at the bottom, your eyes travel through a labyrinth of beams
  • Looking at the side, the structure gives the illusion of floating

Needless to say, it’s a popular photo spot in Chongqing. Complete with selfie lines from tourists and tourists locals patiently waiting their turn to take the perfect pic.

Photography lovers will have a field day playing around with different angles and shots. So much so, that you could easily walk out without even going inside.

Walking into the gallery feels like a bit of a shock after the outside.

Instead of vibrant colors and angles, everything is minimal white walls and well-lit open halls.

It felt empty to me, but maybe that was because they were lacking cool interactive exhibits and only had a few different paintings hung.

Was it bad? No. Did I enjoy it? Sure.

Would I prefer going for the architecture than the exhibits inside? Absolutely.

That being said…

Visiting could go either way.

Highlights:

  • Immersive and curated exhibitions
  • Interesting modern pieces
  • Quiet and never too crowded

Things that lacked:

  • Exhibits
  • They closed off half the museum when I went (yup, just walking around)
  • It might feel unfinished if you’re not a fan of modern art

On average, I would say you can see everything at a nice leisurely pace in about 45 minutes. You won’t be rushing, but you also don’t need to plan an entire day to visit Chongqing Art Gallery.

Is There an Admission Fee?

Yes! And no. But overall, no.

Unlike most museums we visit, there is no admission fee to enter Chongqing Art Gallery.

While you will have to sign in at the front desk when you arrive (and during peak season they may take a quick picture), you don’t have to pay to go inside.

For me, this made it a no-brainer stop.

If you’re on the fence about visiting, not having to worry about tickets or extra cost should help make your decision easier.

The best times to visit Chongqing Art Gallery are morning or late afternoon.

This way you can enjoy the soft glow of sunlight hitting the red beams just right.

Weekdays are also better if you’re looking to avoid large crowds of people. Weekends in China = flooded with locals, families, and Instagram hunters.

PRO-tip: They light up the building at night so if you want to snap a few nighttime shots, go for it!

Another reason visiting Chongqing Art Gallery is so convenient is because of its location.

The museum is located in the center of downtown Chongqing near some of the largest shopping streets in town. Meaning, if you find yourself nearby, you will probably pass by Chongqing Art Gallery.

Plus, plenty of cool stuff is located within walking distance:

Reachable by metro or taxi, visiting Chongqing Art Gallery should be easy whether you’re a solo traveler or with family.

In fact, I would almost guarantee you’ll stumble upon it while exploring Chongqing.

YES, if:

  • Architecture is your thing
  • You love photography and unique IG-worthy spots
  • You want a quick stop that feels more cultural
  • You find yourself traveling through downtown Chongqing

NO, if:

  • You were hoping for something huge like the Louvre in Paris
  • You’re short on time
  • You dislike modern or contemporary art

How Much Time Should You Spend?

Like I said above, visiting Chongqing Art Gallery doesn’t require too much time.

If you’re rushing:

  • Half hour should be enough time to check it out.

Don’t rush: Spend 45 – 60 minutes.

I would recommend hitting up Chongqing Art Gallery if you have about 45 minutes to spare.

It’s the perfect amount of time to take some killer photos outside and walkthrough the exhibitions.

To be honest, I spent more time outside taking photos of the museum than I did inside actually looking at the art.

Tip: Don’t be shy, take as many angles as you want!

Just a few things to keep in mind when snapping those jaw-dropping photos at Chongqing Art Gallery.

  • Shoot from underneath: The bottom creates the best angles with its maze of cubed lines.
  • Wide angle: Chongqing Art Museum is massive, buy a wide angle lens if you can. It allows you to capture the large scale of the building.
  • Include people: You’ll thank me later. Shots are more impactful when you can see how large everything actually is.
  • Wait for good lighting: Try and time your shots when the sun isn’t directly shining on the building. This softens the red and creates a nice illusion.

Honestly, visit during the day and treat this place like a menu at a buffet. Grab and go!

After visiting Chongqing Art Gallery, I think it depends on why you’re traveling to Chongqing.

I wouldn’t spend all day here but would recommend stopping by only if you have time.

The Bottom Line

Chongqing surprised me. From its gigantic layered skyline, mountainous terrain, to its excessive use of neon lights at night, it’s a city that exudes an energy all its own.

Unexpected. Different. Creative.

And that’s why you should visit Chongqing Art Gallery if you are around the area.

If you’re looking for museums that combine culture, history, and a unique twist then hit this spot up!
