If you’re looking for a neighbourhood in Chongqing that is local-feeling, cheaper, and significantly less chaotic than downtown around Jiefangbei, you should check out Shapingba District.
When you first arrive in Chongqing you naturally gravitate towards the popular Hongya Cave or Liberation Monument. However, when I visited parts of Chongqing outside of those two popular spots, I discovered that Shapingba has what many travellers are seeking: a more liveable version of Chongqing with great food, convenient transport, gigantic shopping malls, universities, family-friendly attractions, and some of the best cultural offerings the city has to offer.
Plus, Shapingba is one of the best areas to stay in Chongqing if you’re traveling with kids, want easy day trips, or are looking for a quiet-but-connected base.
Where Is Shapingba District?
![Shapingba District Chongqing: Where to Stay & What to Do ([year] Guide) 5 Residential neighbourhood in Shapingba District Chongqing with older apartment buildings, local shops, and modern high-rise towers](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Shapingba-neighbourhood-1024x546.jpg)
Shapingba District is located on the west side of Chongqing. Known as one of the primary university and education centers of the city, Shapingba is home to several universities including Chongqing University. It also boasts some of the largest student populations in the city. For this reason, Shapingba has a more relaxed, youthful vibe than some of the ultra-commercial city center districts.
That being said, it is still highly accessible.
Depending on traffic and metro lines being serviced, Shapingba is typically:
- About 20–30 minutes to Jiefangbei
- About 30 minutes to Hongya Cave
- Directly serviced by Chongqing Metro
- Easy access to high-speed rail via Shapingba Railway Station
Making it quite convenient for visitors.
Why Stay in Shapingba District?
Travelers tend to ignore Shapingba. There’s no glossy skyline ads pushing downtown Chongqing’s neighbor. Truthfully, I love that about Shapingba.
Let me explain why I feel Shapingba hits the mark for some travelers.
Hotels tend to be cheaper
Hotels in Shapingba are generally cheaper than in central Chongqing, plus the rooms are bigger and the buildings newer.
Expect to see:
- New business hotels
- Kid-friendly serviced apartments
- Foreign hotel chains
- Cheap student hotels
Which is great if you’re staying awhile or traveling with family.
The Food Scene Is Excellent
Due to the high concentration of students, Shapingba boasts an extensive selection of budget local eats.
Such as:
- Real-deal Chongqing hotpot
- Xiaomian (or Chongqing noodles)
- Skewers and Night Market BBQ
- Bubble tea places
- Budget cafes and dessert spots
- Local bakeries & snack streets
- Expect prices to be significantly cheaper than touristy areas.
If you like immersing yourself in the authentic Chinese culinary scene outside of touristy establishments, Shapingba is honestly one of the best districts to do so in Chongqing.
Easier Pace Compared to Downtown
Central Chongqing can be exhausting.
Lots of people say that Chongqing is known for:
- Layered traffic
- Crowds
- Stairs
- Urban congestion
- Busy traffic
Shapingba still has some of these characteristics but it’s typically more relaxed.
This can make a huge difference if you:
- Have young children
- Own a stroller
- Want to go slower
- Are staying longer
- Don’t want to be around tons of tourists

Best Things to Do in Shapingba District
Visit Ciqikou Ancient Town
![Shapingba District Chongqing: Where to Stay & What to Do ([year] Guide) 7 Ciqikou Ancient Town in Chongqing with traditional wooden buildings, red lanterns, and a crowded pedestrian street](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/ciqikoucover-1024x576.jpeg)
Shapingba’s most famous attraction is Ciqikou Ancient Town without a doubt.
Founded over a thousand years ago, Ciqikou Ancient Town is home to:
- Old architecture
- Tea houses
- Snacks
- Souvenir stores
- Old streets
Sure there are crowds. But compared to other replica “ancient towns” you’ll find in China, it still feels authentic.
One thing I like to do is just get lost in the smaller streets that branch off the main crowded thoroughfares. That’s where you’ll find small noodle shops and secret gardens.
Recommended food & drinks:
- Chongqing mahua twists
- Local spicy noodles
- Chinese desserts
- Tea house with a river view
- Go in the morning to avoid the crowds and it’s a totally different feel.
Explore Sanxia Square

You could say this is Shapingba’s downtown area.
You’ll find here:
- Shopping malls
- Street eats
- Department stores
- Movie theaters
- Restaurants
- Public plazas
Crowds of students and locals party around the pedestrian area after dark.
It’s perfect for nightlife if you’re looking for a taste of day to day Chongqing life rather than just tourist places.
Ride the Metro Through the Mountains
One of my favorite things about Chongqing in general is riding around and just experiencing the city itself.
![Shapingba District Chongqing: Where to Stay & What to Do ([year] Guide) 9 chongqing public transport](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/chongqing-public-transport-1024x771.jpg)
Chongqing’s metro goes:
- Through mountains
- Past apartment buildings
- Over flyovers
- With stunning valley views
Normal city transpo will even make you remember your ride home.
If you’re staying in Shapingba you’ll realize how high up Chongqing is pretty fast.
Visit Chongqing University
![Shapingba District Chongqing: Where to Stay & What to Do ([year] Guide) 10 View of Chongqing University campus area in Shapingba District with riverside skyline and high-rise buildings](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/chongqing-university-850x1024.jpg)
Chongqing University’s campus is one of the most scenic ones in the city.
The area around it is also interesting to check out:
- Student Cafés
- Budget Eats
- Bookstores
- Local bakeries
- Hip young culture
It offers a completely different look at Chongqing outside of the touristy areas.
Try Authentic Chongqing Hotpot
![Shapingba District Chongqing: Where to Stay & What to Do ([year] Guide) 11 Authentic Chongqing spicy hot pot with chili oil, peppercorns, and simmering broth filled with ingredients](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/chongqing-spicy-hotpot-1024x682.webp)
You just can’t come to Chongqing and not eat hotpot.
Shapingba is full of local hotpot spots from:
- Mom and pop joints
- Budget student places
- Signature old-school spots
A few things to know:
Chongqing hotpot is seriously spicy.
If you don’t regularly eat Sichuan peppercorn, order half a pot.
Families with children may also want:
- Tomato broth
- Mushroom broth
- Mild broths
Is Shapingba Good for Families?
Shockingly, Yes.
Relative to downtown Chongqing. I have found Shapingba to be:
- Quieter
- Walkable
- Cheaper
- Less Touristy
- Better for slow-paced exploration
Shopping centers/restaurants are usually stroller accessible, but Chongqing is still very hilly/steps everywhere.
Recommendations for those with kids:
- Stay near metro line access
- Choose routes that do not require long distances of walking
- Cab it whenever possible
How Many Days Should You Spend in Shapingba?
Trip ideas:
- 2–3 days if you’re also seeing other parts of Chongqing
- Fewer if you like to travel slowly/lazy or work remotely
Chongqing is perhaps more enticing if you like to travel as a local rather than see everything. This district has more of a residential feel.
Final Thoughts: Is Shapingba Worth Staying In?
Yep.
Don’t get me wrong— neon lights and packed tourist areas are part of Chongqing, too. Just head to Shapingba.
You’ll still have:
- 🍲 Amazing food
- 🏙️ Awesome metro access
- 🏛️ Historic sights
- 🏀 Shopping malls
- 👫 Local culture
But with:
- 🏨 Cheaper hotels
- 🚭 Less smoke and tourist crowds
- 🧘♀️ A slower pace
- ✈️ Better day trips
If you’re traveling to Chongqing and want to feel the authentic vibe of the city but still have easy access to its premier attractions, Shapingba District is seriously one of the best neighborhoods to stay in.
