Seng House Review: Big Portions, Mixed Flavours & Must-Try Dish

You know those Instagram-worthy cafés in Singapore that serve aesthetically pleasing dishes while also filling your comfort food cravings? Seng House falls under that category.

Located at a cute little space with an interior that feels contemporary yet homey. The café features local-inspired meals with its own spin as well as Western-style comfort food classics.

The combination sounds simple enough on paper, but how do those meals taste like in reality?

Well, after dining at Seng House recently and sampling most of their dishes for myself, here’s my no-fluff, tried-and-tested review on everything from ambience to food: should you visit Seng House?

Ambience: Gotta Love the Aesthetic Factor

Ambience-wise, Seng House immediately appealed to me the moment I stepped in.

The interior design heavily features a minimalistic touch with just hints of industrial feels that were neutralised by the warm lights and foliage around the place.

The counters were made with a terrazzo-looking texture that caught my attention right away. Not only did it feel modern and sleek, it also elevated the whole dining experience just by its presence.

But despite its upscale decor, neutral colour palette and warm lights gave the café a homey feel.

You can literally hang out here for:

  • Dinner
  • Coffee and chill with your friends
  • Or take some pictures for your Instagram feed

Overall, they really struck a good balance between having that Instagram-worthy factor but not feeling too out-of-place.

Food at Seng House: What We Ordered

A top-down look at the full Seng House experience—perfect for sharing and trying a bit of everything.

So this is everything we ordered:

  • Claypot Chicken Rice
  • Hainanese Pork Chop
  • Fish and Chips

Not gonna lie, I was pretty impressed with the spread we had since it showcased much of what Seng House offers.

Claypot Chicken Rice: Novel Concept, Pretty Basic Overall

Okay so first up is the claypot chicken rice. I’ll be honest with you, this was probably the dish that piqued my interest the most when we were deciding what to order.

Seng House’s take on claypot chicken rice—simple, comforting, and concept-driven.

It came served on a claypot with generous amount of chopped scallions and sliced chicken on top. Everything looked great until I scooped some rice into my bowl, and realised that it was just chicken rice served in a claypot.

You got me—having it in a claypot deepened the flavour of the rice a tad more but overall, it tasted pretty much the same as your usual chicken rice.

Texture-wise, the rice was soft and not oily at all. Chicken was also well-seasoned and went well with the rice. For those who aren’t familiar with claypot rice, you’ll probably be expecting that nice wok hei taste and crispy bits of rice at the bottom of the claypot.

This wasn’t it.

But hey, I do love a good twist on a classic. If you’re someone who prefers less oily food with mild flavours, you’ll probably enjoy this.

Hainanese Pork Chop: Good But Sauce Wasn’t for Me

Moving on to the Hainanese pork chop, this dish was your usual Western-influenced fried pork cutlet with a local twist.

Crispy Hainanese pork chop served with fries, though the sauce may not be for everyone.

The pork was fried to perfection with a crunchy outer layer while they weren’t stingy with the fries on the side either.

The one thing I didn’t quite enjoy was the sauce.

For some reason, it tasted overly sweet with a hint of tangy tomato sauce. The flavours didn’t mesh well with the pork and I just found it too overpowering for my liking.

I would not order this dish again if I visit Seng House again. But if you do enjoy that old-school Hainanese-style sauce, then you’ll probably dig this.

Fish and Chips – One of the best ate

Whew, this dish gave me SUCH good vibes.

The standout dish—crispy, golden fish with thick cuts and a generous serving of fries.

To start off, the serving of fish they gave us was enormous. And by enormous, I mean BIG. SERIOUSLY HUGE!

The batter was golden brown and crispy on the outside while the fish inside was tender and flaky. Not to mention, it wasn’t oily at all which is always a plus when you’re eating fried food.

They definitely gave us mountains of fries to go along with the fish as well. Speaking of value for money, this dish was ridiculously filling.

  • Batter remained crispy even after we finished half the fish
  • Fish fillet was thick and meaty
  • Such an adequate serving for one person

Desserts & Drinks: Ending on a Sweet Note

Ok so for dessert, we got the crème brûlée and an iced latte to wash everything down.

Smooth and creamy crème brûlée topped with fresh fruits for a light dessert option.

The dessert looked aesthetically pleasing since they served it in a cute glass jar with fruits on top. The custard had a creamy texture with a slightly caramelised top.

As for the latte, it was refreshing and went really well with our heavy mains. Nothing spectacular but did the job.

Truthfully, I don’t think any of the desserts here stood out to me compared to their main dishes.

Portion Sizes & Overall Value

The servings here at Seng House are quite generous.

Fish and chips alone can feed two person.
Fries are heaping on the side for most mains
Chicken rice was decently filling as well

If you’re eating in a group, I find it’s easy to order a couple of dishes to share and have everyone leave satisfied.

Final Thoughts: Great Place if You Cherish the ‘Gram

If there’s one thing I’ll remember about Seng House, it’s the ambience and how their dishes make you feel.

Every item on their menu isn’t mind-blowing, but there are definitely some hidden gems if you know what to look for.

Fish and chips was by far the best thing I ate and if you go to Seng House, I would recommend you try it!

For the most part, their food offers decent quality for the price and really fills you up as well.

Seng House provides that cosy, comfortable atmosphere paired with comforting familiar tastes with their own innovative spin.

This was a hosted media tasting, but all opinions shared are based on my honest dining experience.
