A Quick Overview of Lucerne

We love Lucerne for so many reasons, but walkability is near the top of our list. It’s a five-minute walk from the train station to Lucerne’s iconic Chapel Bridge. From there you’re already steps away from Lucerne’s Old Town.

Lucerne is small by Swiss standards. Unlike big cities like Zurich or Geneva, Lucerne has just a handful of neighbourhoods vying for your attention. Visitors to Lucerne will typically select from one of five neighbourhoods, each with its own unique flavour and style of stay.

Colourful frescoed buildings, medieval squares, and century-old churches: if you book your stay in Lucerne’s Old Town you’re sure to soak up the city’s history and charm.

If your travel plans will have you exploring more of Switzerland, consider staying in Lucerne’s Train Station district. Lucerne’s Hauptbahnhof (train station) is served by direct trains to Interlaken, Zurich, Bern, Engelberg and many more Swiss destinations. It’s one of the best transport hubs in the country.

Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern is a luxury lakeside hotel in Lucerne offering easy access to halal dining, scenic cruises, and Switzerland’s iconic old town attractions.

Hotel guests staying along Lake Lucerne can enjoy elegant grand hotels with sweeping mountain vistas. Many of Lucerne’s luxury hotels can be found along the lakefront.

Neustadt may be located on the other side of Lucerne’s train tracks, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in charm. Filled with independent cafes, wine bars and restaurants, Neustadt attracts locals and returning visitors looking for a less touristy vibe.

Kriens is located at the base of Mount Pilatus. It’s a great option for families and road trippers who want more space and easier parking without sacrificing connectivity to Lucerne city centre.

Old Town (Altstadt) — Best Place to Stay in Lucerne for First-Time Visitors

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, photographers and anyone who wants to experience Lucerne’s historic charm.

Without doubt, if you’re visiting Lucerne for the first time we think Altstadt (Old Town) is the best place to stay in Lucerne.

It’s where you’ll find the quintessential Lucerne of postcards. Picture-perfect cobbled streets criss-cross the narrow alleys lined with colourful buildings, historic facades and photogenic squares, while the turquoise waters of the Reuss River flow past Lucerne’s iconic Chapel Bridge.

Outdoor heated infinity pool at a luxury hotel in Lucerne with mountain views, featuring a guest relaxing in the warm water surrounded by the Swiss Alps.
Relaxing in a heated outdoor infinity pool with panoramic mountain views is one of the most memorable luxury experiences in Lucerne, especially after a day of exploring the Swiss Alps.

You literally cannot step foot outside your accommodation without being transported back in time. Best of all, Lucerne’s most popular attractions are located within walking distance including Chapel Bridge, Jesuit Church, Weinmarkt Square, Musegg Wall and Lion Monument.

It’s our favourite area to wander around early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Waking up to quiet streets, peaceful river reflections and church bells is a completely different experience to bustling afternoons filled with tourists.

Foodie adventurers will also love soaking up atmosphere along the many traditional Swiss restaurants serving cheese fondue and rösti, alongside hidden cafés, artisan bakeries and fine dining tucked away in cosy buildings.

The one downside? Like most historic city centres, expect to pay higher prices for hotels located in Old Town. While lovely, streets can also become crowded with tourists throughout the day (particularly around Chapel Bridge when tour buses arrive).

Overal the conveniency and atmosphere make it worth paying a little more if you’re visiting Lucerne for the first time.

Pros

  • Walk to nearly every major attraction
  • Beautiful medieval streets and architecture
  • Fantastic restaurants and cafés
  • Excellent shopping
  • Ideal for first-time visitors

Cons

  • Higher hotel prices
  • Busy during peak tourist season
  • Limited parking

Around Lucerne Train Station — Best for Convenience and Day Trips

Best for: Travellers exploring Switzerland by train, families and shorter stays.

Lucerne’s main train station may be underestimated by many visitors, but in reality it’s one of the best places to stay in Lucerne.

Why? If you’re planning on exploring Switzerland by rail through Lucerne, this is undeniably one of the smartest locations.

Train stations depart to Interlaken, Bern, Zurich, Engelberg, Lugano and more in minutes. Boat tours to cities along Lake Lucerne leave from right outside and buses travel directly to attractions throughout Lucerne.

While busy, the train station is centrally located and doesn’t feel too far removed from the Old Town. You can reach Chapel Bridge in minutes, and it’s only a ten-minute walk to Lucerne’s Historic Centre.

Hotels tend to be cheaper compared to those located in the heart of Lucerne, while still offering great access to restaurants, supermarkets and shopping centres.

Arriving with large suitcases or late at night? Staying near the station is also ideal because you won’t have to lug your bags through the maze of cobbled streets found in central Lucerne.

The area doesn’t have the best atmosphere (its main purpose is a transport hub after all) but we still think it’s one of the best places to stay in Lucerne depending on your travel style.

Pros

  • Best transport connections
  • Ideal location for scenic train journeys
  • Easy airport transfers
  • 10-min walk to Old Town
  • Excellent shopping nearby

Cons

  • Less historic atmosphere
  • Bussier during the daytime

Lake Lucerne Waterfront — Best for Luxury, Romance and Lake Views

Best for: Couples, honeymooners, luxury travellers and special occasions.

Looking to splurge? Celebrating a special occasion or honeymoon? Nothing beats staying right along the waterfront of Lake Lucerne.

Unlike crowded streets of Lucerne’s Old Town, you’ll feel considerably more relaxed along the lakeside promenade. Beautiful Belle Époque style hotels line the street with many offering private balconies, lakeside terraces and sweeping mountain views.

Traveler enjoying panoramic views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Swiss Alps from the balcony of a luxury hillside hotel near Lucerne.
Waking up to breathtaking views of Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps is one of the highlights of staying in a luxury hotel near Lucerne, offering a peaceful retreat surrounded by Switzerland’s spectacular mountain scenery.

Expect price tags to be on the higher end, but you really can’t beat waking up with a lake view in Lucerne. Couples will also enjoy spending the afternoon on a boat cruise or relaxing in the spa after enjoying a leisurely breakfast in your room.

Our favourite stroll in Lucerne is along the lakeside promenade that starts east from the train station. Flower gardens, stunning hotels and historic villas line the street making it especially pretty during sunrise and sunset.

While you’ll have to travel slightly further to reach Lucerne’s Old Town, it’s still only a 10 to 15-minute walk to reach Chapel Bridge. We think staying along the waterfront is a great compromise between luxury and staying right in the centre of town.

As expected, hotels will cost you. This is by far the most expensive area to stay in Lucerne, especially during peak season from June to September. If you can, we recommend booking several months in advance if travelling during summer.

Pros

  • Spectacular views of Lake Lucerne and surrounding mountains
  • Home to Lucerne’s finest luxury hotels
  • Peaceful atmosphere
  • Excellent restaurants and spa facilities
  • Perfect for romantic getaways

Cons

  • Highest hotel prices in Lucerne
  • Limited budget accommodations
  • Shorter walk to Old Town

Neustadt — Best for Food Lovers and Returning Visitors

Best for: Foodies, younger travellers, digital nomads and travellers looking for a more local feel.

Needing a little refresh? Just south of Lucerne’s train station is Neustadt. Neustadt actually translates to “New Town” in English, but much of the neighbourhood was built during the late nineteenth century. It has since developed into one of Lucerne’s most up-and-coming neighbourhoods.

First-time travellers to Lucerne tend to flock to the medieval streets of Old Town. If you’re visiting Lucerne for a second time, we love checking out what Neustadt has to offer.

You’ll find independent cafés offering specialty coffee, stylish wine bars, bakeries, unique boutiques and contemporary restaurants. It’s a favourite spot for locals to eat and you’ll notice fewer tourists than popular restaurants situated in Lucerne’s tourist centre.

We especially love staying in Neustadt as we find it strikes the perfect balance between convenient and local. You’re still within easy reach of Chapel Bridge and Lake Lucerne, but the atmosphere is considerably more relaxed. If dining with nightlife is on your radar, there’s a stronger restaurant scene with locals flocking to neighbourhood restaurants and outdoor terraces in the evening.

Another bonus is hotel rooms tend to be better value here too. You’ll find many newer hotels with larger rooms and more modern amenities compared to older buildings in Lucerne’s Historic Centre.

Pros

  • Amazing cafés and restaurants
  • More local atmosphere
  • Newer hotels
  • Great value compared to Old Town
  • Short walk to city centre

Cons

  • Less historic charm
  • Farther from major tourist attractions

Kriens — Best for Families, Road Trips and Mount Pilatus

Best for: Families, travellers with a car and anyone visiting Mount Pilatus.

Travel with kids or planning on exploring Central Switzerland via car? Then put Kriens on your list.

Kriens sits southwest of Lucerne and is the starting point for the panoramic gondola that takes visitors up Switzerland’s famed Mount Pilatus. If this excursion is at the top of your list, staying in Kriens will be very convenient.

Hotel rooms are bigger, parking is easier to find and prices are cheaper when compared to Lucerne’s city centre. All of that adds up to sweet family savings. After a long day touring Zurich hotels in Kriens also offer more space and are a bit quieter.

You do trade a bit of atmosphere by skipping Lucerne’s Old Town. However Kriens has reliable bus service to Lucerne’s center. Most routes take 15-20 minutes.

For travellers doing multiple mountain excursions or anyone renting a car to drive through Switzerland, staying in Kriens can save you money and be worth considering over Lucerne’s city centre.

Pros

  • More spacious hotel rooms
  • Better value for families
  • Convenient for Mount Pilatus
  • Easier parking
  • Quieter residential area

Cons

  • Not walking distance to major attractions
  • Not as many restaurants/shops.

Where We’d Stay in Lucerne

If this were our first trip to Lucerne, we wouldn’t hesitate to book a hotel in Lucerne’s Old Town.

Walking across Chapel Bridge before breakfast, wandering down medieval lanes before the crowds arrive and sauntering back to your hotel after dinner are among life’s simple pleasures. Lucerne really comes to life early in the morning and late at night and being centrally located means you’ll get to enjoy it.

If we were planning multiple day trips by scenic railway – to Interlaken, Mount Rigi, Engelberg or Zurich – we’d stay close to the train station. Saving fifteen minutes each way will be welcome if you’re catching early trains and you’re still only a short walk from the Old Town.

If we were celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary, we wouldn’t mind splashing out on a lakeside hotel. Not many things feel quite as special as waking up to views of Lake Lucerne and the Alps beyond.

Families with kids or anyone embarking on a road trip should also consider staying in Kriens. Bigger rooms, easier parking and better prices often outweigh the short bus ride into town.

Hotel Booking Tips for Lucerne

Renting accommodation is one of the largest costs associated with travelling to Switzerland. Lucerne is no exception, so spending a few minutes on planning ahead can have huge benefits on both cost and availability.

Book Ahead for Summer Travel

June through September are the peak tourist months in Lucerne. Upscale hotels along the lakeshore and in the Old Town book up months ahead of time. Particularly if you’re traveling during school holidays or planning your trip for the summer months, try to book three-four months in advance.

Stay Near Train Station if Planning Rail Excursions

Visitors often use Lucerne as a jumping off point for trips to other destinations around Central Switzerland. If your plans include trips to Mount Rigi, Mount Pilatus, Interlaken, Engelberg or Zurich, staying near Lucerne’s train station will cut down your commute each day, especially if you plan on hopping an early morning train.

Pay Extra For Breakfast?

Cafes in Switzerland are expensive. A cup of coffee, some baked goods and an orange juice will run you anywhere from CHF 25-35 per person. If your hotel offers a reputable breakfast buffet, it might be worth it to book a hotel with breakfast included.

Know About Tourist Tax

Most hotels in Lucerne will charge a tourist tax unique to the area. You’ll typically pay this when you check in/out. In exchange, you should receive the Lucerne Visitor Card which offers free transportation on local buses and discounts at certain attractions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use Lucerne as a base for Switzerland?

Yes. Lucerne is one of Switzerland’s easiest transportation hubs, with trains going direct to many of the country’s most popular destinations. If you like the idea of spending some days sightseeing around the city and other days exploring the surrounding mountains, Lucerne makes a great base.

Should you stay in Lucerne Old Town or by the station?

If you’re visiting Lucerne for the first time, we recommend staying in the Old Town. It’s the most beautiful part of the city, with plenty of atmosphere and great architecture. In addition, it’s very walkable.

That being said, if you’re planning on taking multiple day trips from Lucerne by train, you may want to book your accommodation near Lucerne Station. You’ll still be a short walk from the Old Town, but with easier access to the Swiss rail network.

Is Lucerne pricey?

Unfortunately, yes. Lucerne is one of the more expensive cities in Switzerland.

Prices we’ve recently seen:

  • Budget hotels: CHF 140-220 per night
  • Mid range hotels: CHF 220-400 per night
  • Luxury hotels: upwards of CHF 500 per night

For cheaper accommodation, consider visiting Lucerne during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. These tend to have milder weather than winter and summer, while with fewer tourists (and lower prices).

Do you need a car in Lucerne?

No, and you can easily get around Lucerne without one.

Lucerne is actually one of the easiest Swiss cities to explore by foot. Many of Lucerne’s attractions are within walking distance of each other. As for those that aren’t, the city has an excellent bus network that connects to many of Lucerne’s attractions. For scenic routes, there’s also a boat tour that travels around Lucerne’s lake.

Of course, if you’re planning a road trip through Switzerland, then you’ll need to rent a car. But if you’re spending most of your time exploring Lucerne, a car isn’t necessary.

What’s the best area to stay in Lucerne with kids?

We suggest staying in Kriens if you’re travelling with children.

Hotels tend to be larger with easier parking and cheaper than in Lucerne city centre. It’s also a short drive to Mount Pilatus, one of the family-friendly attractions in the region.

What’s the best area to stay for couples?

Head to Lucerne’s waterfront if you’re after somewhere romantic.

There are plenty of hotels that’ll sweep you off your feet (literally) with lakefront views. Take an evening stroll along the waterfront promenade and enjoy the mountain scenery for a romantic honeymoon or anniversary.

Final Verdict: Where Should You Stay in Lucerne?

Lucerne is small enough that your accommodation can greatly impact your visit.

We recommend staying in Old Town (Altstadt) when visiting Lucerne for the first time. Quaint medieval streets lined with colourful buildings, scenic views along the riverside and proximity to Lucerne’s main attractions summarize what Lucerne has to offer. Plus, you’ll spend more time exploring Lucerne and less time getting around when you stay here.

For visitors looking to use Switzerland’s famous rail system to take day trips to other parts of the country, staying close to Lucerne Train Station is convenient and well-connected by train. The station is also within walking distance to both Chapel Bridge and Lucerne’s Old Town.

If you’re visiting Lucerne for a honeymoon or special occasion, there’s no better place to stay than along Lake Lucerne. Waking up to stunning views of Lake Lucerne and the Alps is sure to make your trip.

Neustadt is a great option if you’re interested in exploring Lucerne’s neighbourhoods and dining at some of the best cafes and restaurants. And if you’re traveling with kids or planning a trip to Mount Pilatus, Kriens is your best bet for budget-friendly hotels.

No matter where you choose to stay, you’ll be close to Lucerne’s main attractions like its historic sites, natural beauty and fantastic cuisine.
