Hotel Schönegg Review: Cozy Boutique Stay in Wengen

Booking a hotel in the Jungfrau region is always a challenge, as there are so many of them and most look very similar on the websites. It is important to find something that is close to the lifts but also quiet enough, looks cosy enough and doesn’t fall apart. After a thorough search, I found Hotel Schönegg and am very pleased with this decision. In this post, let me show you my stay experience on a realistic scale, offering in-depth insights. If you are planning to stay at Hotel Schönegg in Wengen, then this 3-star boutique Hotel Schönegg review is just for you!

Getting There

Wengen is a pedestrian village, as no cars are allowed up the mountains. So your arrival will always be an experience itself. Interlaken is served by train stations on both sides of the lake, and you will have to travel to the Wengernalpbahn station and take the scenic mountain train. As you will be heading uphill, you can expect to travel past snow-capped forests and green alpine meadows on the way to the village of Wengen, which is 1,200 metres above sea level.

Hotel Schönegg from the outside

Hotel Schönegg is only a 300-metre walk up the hill from Wengen station. This short uphill trek to the hotel was my first real introduction to Wengen. I was immediately enchanted by this seemingly quiet postcard mountain village, which was sheltered from the wind and had no cars on its roads.

The façade of the hotel is very traditional, using wood in a typical Swiss-chalet style, and was surrounded by flowers. As the hotel is located on a hill, this balcony had a view over the village and to the distant mountains in the background, with the Jungfrau being the obvious feature.

Hotel Schönegg in Wengen: Entrance

Entering the lobby of Hotel Schönegg, I was greeted by wood-panelled walls with stonework detailing, which continued the chalet theme, but in a much more modern setting than the villages outside.

Hotel Schönegg had a cosy, sophisticated, and very welcoming atmosphere. This was a boutique hotel with character and charm, and it was so much more cosy and less sterile-feeling than most large chain hotels. However, it is not massive, with 30 rooms in total, and the space and layout of these rooms is cosy but not cramped. I would describe it as a stylish family home with rooms for guests rather than a hotel.

Hotel Location

Hotel Schönegg has one of the best locations in Wengen. It is very central, but because Wengen is a pedestrian village, it is also very quiet. From your front door, you are 300 metres from the train station and only 150 metres from the cable car lift that will take you up to the Männlichen ski region.

The hotel is very close to restaurants and shops on the main street. One of the beauties of Wengen is that it is a car-free pedestrian village. It means the air is clean, it is very quiet, and it really does feel as if you are in a postcard setting of the Alps. Wengen is at a height of 1,200 metres and is a perfect base to access both ski slopes in winter and walking and hiking trails in the summer.

Mountain View Room Tour

Hotel Schönegg offers three types of rooms: those with a mountain view, valley view, and standard room. I was lucky enough to get one with a mountain view and a balcony.

Hotel Schönegg Room Tour

The balcony at Hotel Schönegg was very impressive. From it, you could see both the Jungfrau massif on the horizon, across the valley, as well as the rooftops of Wengen village.

The room was very cosy and not huge but very much in the same style of design as the front of the hotel. It featured newly renovated wooden furniture, floors, and ceilings, which really do give that old Swiss chalet feeling and ambience to the room.

The bed was also comfortable, with crisp white linen. There was a flat-screen TV and free WiFi, which worked very well throughout the hotel. As you can imagine, storage is limited in a small boutique hotel room in the mountains, so I would suggest trying not to bring too much luggage and keep your packing to a minimum.

Pre-authorization issue

The staff will take a deposit pre-authorization from you at the time of check-in. I would advise that you check this is released when you leave, as it may not be the case. (In my situation, I had to chase this up, but it was resolved with no fuss.)

Hotel Schönegg Dining and Drinks

Hotel Schönegg does have a restaurant on-site, which is regularly rated as one of the best in the Jungfrau region. There are some reports online that it is Michelin quality, but that is not for me to judge, as I didn’t eat there during my stay. However, I can say that the breakfast is included in the price of the room and was excellent.

Hotel Schönegg – Dining and Drinks

Breakfast

Hotel Schönegg has a delicious traditional European continental breakfast buffet spread, served in a lovely wood-panelled dining room with mountain views. I found this to be a filling and high-quality breakfast.

The hotel also has a bar and lounge, which was another area where I spent quite a bit of time during my stay. It is a cosy place with a welcoming atmosphere. It also had a fireplace, which I could imagine would make it a very snug après-ski place in the winter months.

Spa, Facilities & Service

For a hotel rated at 3-stars superior, Hotel Schönegg offers surprisingly good spa and fitness facilities. I would not expect a full spa or health centre at this level, and it is very much a boutique-style and focused approach on the basics.

Hotel Schönegg has a sauna and a lounge with a fireplace. It is a much more intimate space, which makes it nice and cosy but also means you may struggle to find space to relax if the hotel is busy.

The hotel also has a bar, which is a small space but welcoming and a good spot for a nightcap. The hotel does offer free WiFi, which I found was good throughout my stay.

The service at Hotel Schönegg was very good. On arrival, the front-desk receptionist was friendly and immediately gave me tips on the best places to go and walk in Wengen. She also explained the cable car connection to the Männlichen ski region and was very helpful.

Hotel Schönegg – Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Excellent location in the centre of Wengen.
  • Very impressive balcony with fantastic views over Wengen and the Jungfrau mountain.
  • Design, décor, and furnishings inside the hotel had a real Swiss chalet feel and charm.
  • Restaurant at the hotel is award-winning.
  • Sauna and lounge facilities are very good for a hotel of this standard.
  • The staff were friendly and welcoming.

Cons

  • Rooms are small, with limited storage.
  • Restaurant may be a little on the expensive side for the budget traveller.
  • Deposit pre-authorization needs to be carefully followed up on at check-out.

Value for Money

Hotel Schönegg is certainly more expensive than in Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen, but, in my opinion, you get better value for money in Wengen for the location and views. Wengen is not the cheapest option in the Jungfrau region by any means. However, with such impressive balcony views, a central location, and the boutique charm, I found the price was fair value for money.

My Hotel Stay Highlights

  • Waking up to the view over the village and mountain from my balcony in the morning.
  • The very friendly staff and warm welcome at the front desk.
  • The cosy but elegant atmosphere in the dining room with mountain views.

Hotel Schönegg is perfect for:

  • Couples looking for a romantic mountain getaway.
  • Mountain lovers who enjoy skiing and hiking and want easy access to the lifts.
  • Guests who prefer boutique hotels to big resort chains.
  • Travelers who want to be centrally located in Wengen without being in a noisy area.

Final Verdict

I would highly recommend Hotel Schönegg and will give it a score of 8 out of 10 based on my experiences. The rooms are compact, but the views and service more than make up for this. Added to this is an award-winning restaurant and a really charming hotel which gives you a genuine sense of the Swiss Alps.

As far as I am concerned, it is excellent value for the price and location. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it.

Hotel Schönegg is a charming boutique hotel with stunning views over the village and the Jungfrau mountain, very friendly service and staff, and an unbeatable location. Ideal for couples and mountain lovers.
