Why Switzerland Is Surprisingly Great For Muslim Travellers

What surprised me about Switzerland was how Muslim friendly it really is. Even though they aren’t marketed or advertised as a Halal travel destination:

Zurich, Geneva, Interlaken and Lucerne all have an emerging halal dining scene. Turkish restaurants, Lebanese restaurants, Indian halal restaurants and even halal fast food (in some places)! Prayer spaces can easily be found as well and are more readily available than you think.

What sets Switzerland apart is that it’s so clean and family oriented. You feel safe walking around public areas, their transportation system is top-notch, and it’s very peaceful and respectful. If you have children and are a Muslim family looking to travel, Switzerland is GREAT for that.

You won’t find many “halal hotels” but you will find hotels with majority of the things Muslim travelers look for:

  • Rooms that are family friendly
  • Quiet Atmosphere
  • Accessibility to Halal Restaurants
  • Bidet/toilettes or modern bathrooms
  • Kitchenettes to cook your own food
  • Spa/Relaxation section you can book privately
  • Close to mosque or Muslim neighborhood

Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa

Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa overlooking Lake Lucerne and the Swiss mountains at dusk
Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa offers stunning panoramic views over Lake Lucerne, making it one of the most luxurious Muslim-friendly hotels in Switzerland.

Address: Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne CH-6363 Obbürgen

Surrounded by mountains and sitting high above Lake Lucerne, Bürgenstock Hotel feels like one of Europe’s classiest mountain resorts. Simply put, the views are amazing.

Muslim travellers will appreciate this hotel in particular because of the spacious suites, privacy, and quiet atmosphere. Families and couples who enjoy luxury away from the crowds will feel right at home.

Rooms and suites are modern, with understated luxury rather than flashy decor. Accommodations are spacious, bathrooms are gorgeous, and many suites offer sweeping views of Lake Lucerne. Seriously, sunrise views from this hotel are out of this world.

Extra bonus points for seafood and vegetarian dining options around the resort. This makes eating halal-friendly meals much easier when halal restaurants aren’t within walking distance.

If you’re visiting Switzerland for your honeymoon or anniversary, consider Bürgenstock one of your top luxury hotel options.

Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa

Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa exterior with outdoor terrace and fountain in Interlaken Switzerland
Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is a luxury family-friendly hotel in Interlaken with easy access to halal restaurants and Switzerland’s famous mountain attractions.

Address:
Höheweg 41, 3800 Interlaken, Switzerland

When visiting Switzerland as a Muslim family, Interlaken is one of your best destinations overall. The city has multiple halal restaurants, convenient train access, and family-friendly attractions.

Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is a popular luxury option in the Interlaken area.

My favorite thing about this hotel is how it balances classic Swiss luxury with convenient amenities. You are steps away from halal dining options in town, nearby train stations with scenic views, and right in the heart of the Alpine views.

The hotel itself is great for families too. Larger suites are available, service is friendly and helpful, and being in the centre of town makes visiting attractions with kids much easier.

For Muslim travellers doing Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Interlaken in one trip, book this hotel.

Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern

Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern facing Lake Lucerne in Switzerland with historic architecture and waterfront promenade
Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern is a luxury lakeside hotel in Lucerne offering easy access to halal dining, scenic cruises, and Switzerland’s iconic old town attractions.

Address: Schweizerhofquai 3, 6002 Luzern, Switzerland

Out of all the Swiss cities I’ve visited, Lucerne is my personal favourite for Muslim travellers.

The city is scenic, walkable, and relaxed. There are also multiple halal restaurants within the city, particularly around the train station.

Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern stands out from other luxury hotels in Lucerne because it’s located right along Lake Lucerne. You can easily walk to most attractions, take scenic cruises, and connect to train stations.

Rooms have a nice balance of classic Swiss charm with modern amenities. You can even get rooms with balconies that look out onto Lake Lucerne and the mountains.

Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern is perfect for travellers who want luxury but don’t want to feel stuffy or intimidated.

The Chedi Andermatt

The Chedi Andermatt luxury mountain resort surrounded by snowy Swiss Alps in Andermatt Switzerland
The Chedi Andermatt combines Swiss Alpine scenery with modern luxury, making it a popular Muslim-friendly hotel for couples and families visiting Switzerland.

Address: Gotthardstrasse 4, 6490 Andermatt, Switzerland

If you want a hotel that completely blows your mind, check out The Chedi Andermatt.

A blend of Swiss Alpine architecture with Asian-inspired accents, The Chedi has a very relaxing and refined atmosphere that’s unique from traditional European hotels.

Here’s why Muslim travellers are fond of The Chedi Andermatt.

The hotel offers great privacy, spacious suites, and dining options that are less European. While Switzerland isn’t known for its international cuisine, this hotel has more diverse dining options than most.

The service here is exceptional, and they are able to accommodate most dietary requests. Bonus for Muslim couples: you can book some of the spa facilities privately.

Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva

Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva beside the river in Geneva Switzerland surrounded by greenery
Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva is a luxury Muslim-friendly hotel near halal restaurants, shopping streets, and Lake Geneva attractions.

Address: Quai des Bergues 33, 1201 Genève, Switzerland

Last time I visited Geneva, I was surprised by how accommodating the city was for Muslim travellers.

Geneva is home to a large Muslim population. There are multiple mosques in Geneva, and halal dining options range from Middle Eastern restaurants to halal burgers and Indian food.

Located right along Lake Geneva, Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues offers classic five-star accommodations.

If you love shopping, luxury, and general city convenience, consider staying at Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues.

Service is amazing here. Hotel staff are experienced with international travellers and will do their best to accommodate your dietary needs.

Another reason to love this hotel? You can walk to halal restaurants, shopping areas, and Geneva’s Old Town.

Hotel Eden Roc Ascona

Hotel Eden Roc Ascona lakeview room with balcony overlooking Lake Maggiore in Switzerland
Hotel Eden Roc Ascona offers peaceful lakefront luxury with spacious rooms and stunning views, making it ideal for Muslim couples and families visiting southern Switzerland.

The Italian-speaking region of Switzerland is vastly different than the German-speaking parts of Switzerland.

Instead of mountain resorts with snow-covered trees, Hotel Eden Roc Ascona boasts palm trees, lakefront views, and Mediterranean vibes.

Muslim travellers looking for a relaxing (and romantic) Swiss getaway will adore Hotel Eden Roc Ascona.

The atmosphere is relaxing, more elegant than extravagant, and not as crowded as major tourist destinations. Rooms are spacious, lake-facing suites are gorgeous, and overall the resort has a peaceful vibe.

You’ll also find more seafood and vegetarian dining options around Ascona compared to other cities in Switzerland.

Radisson Blu Hotel Zurich Airport

Radisson Blu Hotel Zurich Airport modern suite interior near Zurich Airport in Switzerland
Radisson Blu Hotel Zurich Airport offers modern family-friendly rooms with direct airport access, making it a convenient Muslim-friendly hotel for transit stays in Switzerland.

Address: Zurich Airport, Rondellstrasse, 8058 Zürich, Switzerland

Switzerland doesn’t always have to be luxurious. If you’re touring Europe, doing transit, or arriving late at night, Radisson Blu Hotel Zurich Airport is a great choice.

Why?

Location, location, location.

You’re connected to Zurich Airport, train stations are convenient, and you can easily travel to Zurich city centre where you’ll find more halal dining options.

Families will appreciate how easy this hotel makes travelling through Switzerland. Dragging strollers and luggage through snow isn’t ideal after a long flight.

Rooms here are clean, comfortable, and what I would call “no-frills.” Don’t let that discourage you though. Sometimes simple is better.

Hotel Metropole Geneve

Hotel Metropole Geneve luxury hotel exterior near Lake Geneva in Switzerland
Hotel Metropole Geneve is a centrally located luxury hotel in Geneva with easy access to halal restaurants, shopping districts, and major city attractions.

Address: Quai du Général-Guisan 34, 1204 Genève, Switzerland

Another great Geneva hotel for Muslim travellers is Hotel Metropole Geneve.

This hotel is located near the lake and luxury shopping district. You’ll be within walking distance to restaurants and attractions.

Metropole Hotel feels more boutique than your larger luxury hotels.

The rooftop terrace is a highlight, with gorgeous views of Geneva.

Hotel Metropole is great for couples who want to stay central in Geneva without staying at a high-end hotel.

Sunstar Hotel Grindelwald

Sunstar Hotel Grindelwald surrounded by Swiss Alps and mountain scenery in Grindelwald Switzerland
Sunstar Hotel Grindelwald offers family-friendly accommodation with breathtaking mountain views, making it a great Muslim-friendly base for exploring the Swiss Alps.

Address: Dorfstrasse 168, 3818 Grindelwald, Switzerland

I’ve got a confession. If waking up to jaw-dropping mountain views is a goal of your Switzerland vacation, I can’t think of a better place to stay than Grindelwald.

Sunstar Hotel Grindelwald is great for Muslim families because the hotel rooms are spacious, and it’s less crowded.

You’re close to mountain excursions, yet can still access restaurants and transportation easily.

Here’s my experience with Grindelwald. It’s peaceful. Unlike some of the larger, well-known tourist attractions in Switzerland, Grindelwald is quiet. If your family enjoys nature and visiting First Cliff Walk, Jungfraujoch, or Lauterbrunnen, staying in Grindelwald is very convenient.

La Réserve Genève Hotel & Spa

La Réserve Genève Hotel & Spa surrounded by landscaped gardens in Geneva Switzerland
La Réserve Genève Hotel & Spa offers a peaceful luxury retreat with spacious grounds and wellness facilities, ideal for Muslim travellers seeking privacy and relaxation in Switzerland.

Address: Rte de Lausanne 301, 1293 Bellevue, Switzerlan

When I first visited La Réserve Genève Hotel & Spa, I was immediately struck by how “secret” it felt.

Situated in the middle of sprawling greenery, La Reserve Genève is private, relaxing, and has amazing spa facilities.

La Reserve feels like more of a luxury getaway rather than your typical hotel. Muslim travellers will especially enjoy the larger suites and more quiet atmosphere compared to other hotels in downtown Geneva.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that dining options are flexible here. Hotel staff are accommodating with special diets.

Tips For Muslim Travellers Visiting Switzerland

Halal Food Is Easier To Find Than You Think

All cities will have halal options including Zurich, Geneva, Interlaken and Lucerne. Halal food such as Turkish kebab shops are very common in Switzerland.

You can also find Indian, Lebanese, Bosnian and Pakistani restaurants serving halal food in touristy cities.

Book Apartments If You’re Stay Lengthy

Apartment hotels with kitchens are ideal if having access to halal food is crucial for you.

Some Muslim travellers even cook their own simple meals every now and then when they are on longer stays in Switzerland itineraries as eating out can get expensive.

Friday Prayers Are Available In Larger Cities

Islam is practiced at many mosques and Islamic centres in Geneva, Zurich and Bern.

If attending Jumu’ah is something you’re looking for when travelling and accommodation shopping, book hotels close to main train stations.

Switzerland Is Extremely Family Friendly

Switzerland really shines in this category.

The cleanliness of their public transport, family friendly attractions, safe cities, stroller-friendly streets and polite locals are perfect for travelling with kids.

Final Thoughts

Switzerland isn’t exactly trying to position itself as a halal holiday destination but trust me it ticks all the boxes for Muslim travellers.

Safety, cleanliness, stunning views and an increased selection of halal food options make Switzerland one of the best Muslim family and couples travel spots in Europe.

Whether you’re after a 5 star resort in the mountains like Andermatt, a family-friendly destination like Interlaken or a city break with lakeside views in Geneva or Lucerne, you’ll find great Muslim-friendly accommodation options.

Halal food and transport hubs are the main things you need to look into before you book so with a little research Switzerland can be a great destination for Muslim tourists.
