Where to Stay in Guilin: Best Areas & Hotels (2026)

Best areas in Guilin, Yangshuo, Xingping and Longji — with hotel picks, transport trade-offs and advice on who should stay where.

Where should you stay in Guilin?

I would stay split between Guilin City Centre and Yangshuo instead of one base for the entire visit as most first-time travellers will find. Guilin City Centre allows for convenient arrival, visiting things in the city, and taking your Li River cruise. Then transfer to Yangshuo for 2-3 nights to relax and explore karst countryside around town and along the Yulong River. If you had to stay in one place though, I would choose somewhere along the Yulong River countryside near Yangshuo. Consider adding Xingping for some photography and Longji for overnight if seeing sunrise at the rice terraces is important to you.

  • Best overall Yangshuo – Yulong River / Countryside
  • Best for families Guilin City Centre
  • Best for sightseeing Guilin City Centre
  • Best value Yangshuo Town / West Street
  • Best luxury Yangshuo – Yulong River / Countryside
  • Best for Li River Cruise Guilin City Centre

Our own family-friendly Yangshuo pick, with spacious grounds, Yulong River scenery and activities that worked especially well when travelling with a young child.

Best Terrace Stay

Baike Boutique Hotel

Longsheng / Longji Rice Terraces

A small boutique stay in Ping’an with terrace views that lets you experience Longji early and late in the day instead of rushing back to Guilin.

It gives your Longji section a specific bookable hotel rather than the vague “any guesthouse in Dazhai Village” currently used in the article.

Approximately 4 minutes from the main drop-off area according to current accommodation information Baike Boutique Hotel is in Ping’an Village, around 210 metres from the village itself, with rooms offering terrace views.

Secret Courtyard Resort Hotel

Guilin City Centre – Best for First-Time Visitors

Guilin City Centre is where you want to stay if it's your first trip to Guilin. You'll be close to the Two Rivers and Four Lakes, Elephant Trunk Hill and plenty of restaurants, while the city's airport, rail stations and Li River cruises are all convenient from here. I'd especially recommend staying in the centre the night of your arrival, or before a morning Li River cruise. The downside is ambiance: Guilin is much more city-like than the countryside around Yangshuo. For that reason, I would combine it with staying at a second base, rather than spend all of your time in Guilin on a long trip.

Area facts

Best for
First-time visitors, short stays, families, Li River cruise passengers, train and airport arrivals
Not ideal for
Travellers whose main priority is rural scenery, cycling or a quiet countryside retreat
Typical price level
Budget to Luxury
Nearest stations
Guilin Railway Station; Guilin North Railway Station; city buses and taxis; transfers to Li River cruise piers
Airport or station access
Best-connected base in the region for Guilin Liangjiang International Airport and Guilin’s main railway stations.
Main advantage
Excellent transport connections and easy access to Guilin’s major city attractions.
Main drawback
More urban and busy than Yangshuo, Xingping or Longji.
Nearby attractions
Elephant Trunk Hill
Two Rivers and Four Lakes
Sun and Moon Pagodas
Seven Star Park
Reed Flute Cave
Li River
Recommended for
1–2 nights; particularly useful at the beginning or end of a Guilin itinerary.

Pros

  • Best transport connections in the Guilin region
  • Walkable access to major city sights and restaurants
  • Convenient before a Li River cruise

Cons

  • Less scenic than Yangshuo or Xingping
  • Busy during major Chinese holidays

Hotels in Guilin City Centre

Yangshuo Town – Best for Dining & Nightlife

Central Yangshuo was my favorite option if you want to enjoy all the scenery of southern Guangxi but don't want to sacrifice restaurants, cafes, nightlife or easy tour access. West Street is the tourism center of Yangshuo, and being close to it makes your evenings especially convenient after you're done sightseeing for the day. It's also the most practical option if you don't rent a scooter or arrange private transport. The downside is noise and crowds. If you want the Yangshuo that you see in postcards -- rice paddies, tranquil roads and mountains-viewing from your window -- book somewhere along the Yulong River instead.

Area facts

Best for
First-time Yangshuo visitors, younger travellers, backpackers, nightlife, restaurants, travellers without private transport
Not ideal for
Couples seeking complete tranquillity or travellers wanting to wake up directly beside rice paddies and the Yulong River
Typical price level
Budget to Mid-range
Nearest stations
Yangshuo bus connections; taxis and local transfers; Yangshuo Railway Station is actually near Xingping rather than central Yangshuo
Airport or station access
Requires an onward road transfer from Guilin Airport or Yangshuo Railway Station.
Main advantage
The most convenient base for restaurants, shops, nightlife and organised activities.
Main drawback
West Street and the town centre can feel crowded and commercial, especially in peak season.
Nearby attractions
West Street
Li River
Impression Liu Sanjie
Yulong River
Moon Hill
Yangshuo countryside
Recommended for
2–3 nights; ideal for travellers who prioritise convenience over complete countryside seclusion.

Pros

  • Huge selection of restaurants and accommodation
  • Easy access to tours, taxis and local transport
  • Good budget accommodation choices

Cons

  • Can become crowded and noisy
  • Less atmospheric than staying in the countryside

Hotels in Yangshuo Town

Yulong River / Yangshuo Countryside – Best Overall

If pictures of misty karst mountains and tranquil rice paddies drew you to Guilin, you should stay here. Country along the Yulong River lies outside the busiest streets in Yangshuo and trades bars and trinket shops for bamboo forests, small towns and quiet roads that are perfect for biking. Boutiques and riverside hotels factor heavily into this area's charm. You do sacrifice some convenience, but for two or three nights I think that trade-off is generally worth it. This part of Yangshuo most closely resembles the Yangshuo many travellers envision before they arrive.

Area facts

Best for
Couples, nature lovers, families wanting space, photographers, cycling, slow travel, scenic boutique stays
Not ideal for
Travellers who want nightlife within walking distance or need to rely entirely on public transport
Typical price level
Mid-range to Luxury
Nearest stations
Around 4–6 km from central Yangshuo depending on the property; taxi, bicycle, e-bike or hotel transfer
Airport or station access
Usually reached via Yangshuo Town after arriving from Guilin Airport or Yangshuo Railway Station.
Main advantage
The strongest combination of scenery, tranquillity and access to outdoor activities.
Main drawback
You will probably need taxis, bicycles, scooters or hotel transfers to get around.
Nearby attractions
Yulong River
Yulong River bamboo rafting
Moon Hill
Ten-Mile Gallery
Gongnong Bridge
Yangshuo countryside cycling routes
Recommended for
2–4 nights; my preferred base for couples and travellers coming primarily for Yangshuo’s scenery.

Pros

  • Beautiful karst and riverside scenery
  • Excellent for cycling and bamboo rafting
  • Quiet boutique hotels and romantic stays

Cons

  • Less convenient for restaurants and nightlife
  • Transport is easier with taxis, bicycles or scooters

Hotels in Yulong River / Yangshuo Countryside

Xingping – Best for Photographers

Xingping is my favourite lesser-known alternative to Yangshuo town centre when scenery trumps nightlife. The small town next to one of the Li River's most recognisable stretches includes the mountain and pinnacle featured on China's 20-yuan note. Tourism has arrived in Xingping but evenings remain peaceful compared to West Street. Overnight guests also have more opportunities to visit the river early or late, before crowds of day-trippers arrive (or leave). There are fewer restaurants and hotels, but that sense of quiet is exactly why I would pick Xingping.

Area facts

Best for
Photographers, backpackers, nature lovers, repeat visitors, travellers seeking a quieter alternative to Yangshuo
Not ideal for
Travellers wanting extensive nightlife, luxury resorts or a large selection of restaurants
Typical price level
Budget to Mid-range
Nearest stations
Yangshuo Railway Station; buses and taxis between Xingping and Yangshuo
Airport or station access
Convenient for Yangshuo Railway Station but considerably farther from Guilin Liangjiang International Airport.
Main advantage
Spectacular Li River scenery with fewer crowds than central Yangshuo.
Main drawback
Much smaller choice of hotels, restaurants and evening entertainment.
Nearby attractions
Xingping Ancient Town
Li River
20 Yuan Note Viewpoint
Laoshan Mountain viewpoints
Nine Horses Fresco Hill
Yangshuo Railway Station area
Recommended for
1–2 nights; ideal as an add-on for photographers or travellers who prefer smaller towns.

Pros

  • Some of the best Li River scenery
  • Quieter than Yangshuo Town
  • Convenient for Yangshuo Railway Station

Cons

  • Limited nightlife and restaurant variety
  • Fewer upscale accommodation options

Hotels in Xingping

Longsheng / Longji Rice Terraces – Best for Rice Terraces

Longji is by far the least convenient base we have included in this guide. This remoteness, however, also contributes to its charm. The terraces are shockingly quiet once day-trippers leave and you can enjoy watching sunrise and sunset, and walking through morning mist without having to wake at the crack of dawn in Guilin. We enjoyed Dazhai more for its scenery and quieter atmosphere, though Ping'an makes for an easier first visit. You will find smaller, family-run guesthouses rather than large resorts. Visit Longji for the views and adventure, not for your hotel amenities.

Area facts

Best for
Photographers, hikers, cultural travellers, landscape lovers, slow travel
Not ideal for
Travellers with limited mobility, short Guilin stopovers, nightlife seekers or anyone wanting luxury-city convenience
Typical price level
Budget to Mid-range
Nearest stations
Road transfer or tourist bus from Guilin; onward local transfers to Ping’an or Dazhai/Jinkeng
Airport or station access
Remote compared with Guilin and Yangshuo; allow a dedicated transfer rather than treating Longji as a convenient transport base.
Main advantage
Staying overnight lets you experience the terraces around sunrise and sunset after many day visitors have left.
Main drawback
Remote location and potentially steep walking between villages, viewpoints and accommodation.
Nearby attractions
Longji Rice Terraces
Ping’an Village
Dazhai Village
Jinkeng Rice Terraces
Terrace sunrise viewpoints
Traditional Zhuang and Yao villages
Recommended for
1–2 nights; worthwhile for photographers and anyone who wants more than a rushed Guilin day trip.

Pros

  • Wake up directly among the rice terraces
  • Excellent sunrise and sunset photography
  • More immersive than visiting on a day trip

Cons

  • Longer transfers from Guilin
  • Some stays require steep walking or stairs

Hotels in Longsheng / Longji Rice Terraces

Lujia Village – Best Hidden Gem

My recommendation for visitors who feel central Guilin is just slightly too hectic would be Lujia Village. While still close to the city, its adjacent river, traditional homes, and mountainous views lend the town a much more peaceful vibe. Particularly ideal for couples or anyone who is starting or ending an extended trip through Guangxi. You won't have the variety of restaurants or accessibility on foot that you would in central Guilin, but you also won't have to make the logistical leap of Yangshuo or Longji.

Area facts

Best for
Couples, quiet stays, boutique hotels, repeat visitors, travellers who still need easy access to Guilin
Not ideal for
Nightlife, extensive dining choices or travellers wanting to stay directly beside Guilin’s headline attractions
Typical price level
Mid-range to Luxury
Nearest stations
Taxi or private transfer from central Guilin
Airport or station access
Easy onward taxi connection to Guilin’s railway stations and airport compared with more remote bases such as Yangshuo or Longji.
Main advantage
Peaceful natural setting while remaining close to Guilin City.
Main drawback
Far fewer restaurants, shops and attractions within immediate walking distance than central Guilin.
Nearby attractions
Taohua River
Reed Flute Cave
Guilin countryside
Two Rivers and Four Lakes
Central Guilin
Recommended for
1–2 nights; best for travellers who want a quieter Guilin base without committing to the journey south to Yangshuo.

Pros

  • Peaceful setting close to Guilin
  • Characterful boutique accommodation
  • Easy escape from the busy city centre

Cons

  • Limited restaurants and nightlife
  • Fewer major attractions within walking distance

Hotels in Lujia Village

Compare hotels in Guilin

Use the map to compare hotel locations after choosing your preferred area. Check the distance to the nearest station before booking.

Booking tips

  • Best time to visit

March to May and September to November bring the most comfortable weather conditions, lush karst vegetation and great outdoor conditions. Spring, in particular, is nice in the Li and Yulong river valleys. Autumn tends to have clearer skies and features great hiking, cycling and photo conditions.

  • High season

Peak tourism season in Guilin runs from April to October. Hotel prices and tourism crowds peak around Chinese public holidays. Look for especially high volumes of domestic tourists during May Labour Day holiday and National Day Golden Week in early October.

  • Festivals & events

Chinese national holidays like Golden Week in early October, Labor Day holidays in early May or Chinese New Year can drive up domestic demand for travel. As Guilin is mostly a tourist destination rather than a big trade- fair city, public holidays in China have much more influence over hotel availability than conferences or events.

  • When to book

For "peak season", this would be equivalent to booking 4–8 weeks in advance for most destinations. However, for stays in April–October in popular Yangshuo countryside lodging spots, Longji terrace hotels and guesthouses, and Chinese National holidays, book 2–3 months ahead or more. Your current guidebook wisely notes Yangshuo and Longji to be where good guesthouses go quickly.

  • Typical prices

Guilin's lodging ranges from low-priced city hotels and guesthouses in rural villages to mid-range and luxury riverside and mountain resorts. Lodging selection is usually best in central Guilin and Yangshuo Town for lower-end and mid-price categories. Properties with the best views along the Yulong River can be pricey. Accommodation in Longji is often basic; rooms overlooking the terraces can rise to a mid-range price, especially during peak camera season and holidays.

  • Getting around

Guilin City is the most accessible base without private transport, where buses, taxis and Didi services will prove widely useful. Yangshuo properties near West Street work well if you prefer not to take taxis, while those in the countryside around the Yulong River will be more accessible by bicycle/e-bike, taxi, or hotel transfers. Longji trips require the most planning since your accommodation may require a road transfer plus hiking through hillside villages.

  • Airport access

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport is the region's primary airport. Guilin City's Central District is about 40–60 minutes by road, depending on traffic conditions. There are airport buses, taxis, and Didi service available. If you arrive late at night or leave very early in the morning, spending your first or last night in Guilin City is significantly easier than Yangshuo or Longji.

  • Railway access

Guilin hosts several railway stations, and is integrated into China's high speed rail network. Just remember that Yangshuo Railway Station is located in Xingping, not central Yangshuo (Google/Yahoo Maps etc put it about 22 km from downtown Yangshuo). Allow time to take an onward shuttle, taxi or organise hotel transfer.

  • Family stays

Guilin City Centre is the most convenient area for families with small children to stay for a short period of time with its restaurants, transport and easy access to sightseeing. If you are planning a longer trip and your family would enjoy more space and peace and quiet, consider staying in the countryside along the Yulong River. Avoid staying next to lively West Street if you have kids who wake easy, and reconsider staying on the hills in Longji if you have a stroller or lots of luggage.

  • Accessibility

Guilin City Centre is generally the most practical base for travellers with reduced mobility because taxis, restaurants and major hotels are readily available. Yangshuo countryside properties can involve uneven paths, while Longji is the most challenging area because many villages and viewpoints require stairs, slopes or walking with luggage. Contact your accommodation directly before booking if step-free access is essential.

  • Payment tips

Mobile payment is everywhere in China. Tourists can use Alipay and WeChat Pay with some foreign bank cards supported, so download at least one mobile payment app before you arrive and you will have a much easier time taking taxis, eating out and making small purchases. Bring some cash in CNY as a backup, and a physical bank card for hotels and bigger places.

  • Local booking tips

Book under the same name that appears on your passport, and have your passport handy for check-in. When booking for Yangshuo and Longji specifically, pay attention to the map location of the property before booking (instead of just the destination): while it will say "Yangshuo" on your ticket, the hotel could be located far from town. For Longji, guesthouses are often located a long uphill walk from where the bus drops you off. Enquire before booking if hotels in the countryside include station transfers and assistance with luggage. This can be a huge help in rural Guilin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Guilin for first-time visitors?

Guilin City Centre is the most convenient choice for first-time visitors because it offers easy access to major attractions, railway stations, airport transfers and Li River cruise departures. I recommend staying 1–2 nights before continuing to Yangshuo.

Is it better to stay in Guilin or Yangshuo?

For most travellers, it is better to stay in both. Guilin is more convenient for transport and city sightseeing, while Yangshuo offers better countryside scenery, cycling, riverside stays and outdoor activities.

How many days should I stay in Guilin?

Allow around 4–6 days for the wider Guilin region. A good itinerary is 1–2 nights in Guilin City, 2–3 nights in Yangshuo and an optional night at the Longji Rice Terraces.

Where should I stay in Yangshuo for the best scenery?

The Yulong River countryside is my top choice for scenery. You will find peaceful riverside hotels, rice fields, cycling routes and dramatic karst mountains, while still being within easy reach of central Yangshuo.

Should I stay overnight at the Longji Rice Terraces?

Yes, especially if photography or hiking is important to you. Staying overnight lets you experience the terraces around sunrise and sunset when they are quieter and many day-trippers have left.

Where should families stay in Guilin?

Guilin City Centre is usually the easiest option for families because of its convenient transport, restaurants and attractions. Families wanting a quieter stay can also consider the Yulong River countryside near Yangshuo.

Is Xingping worth staying overnight?

Yes. Xingping is particularly good for photographers and travellers who prefer quieter surroundings. It offers beautiful Li River scenery and a more relaxed atmosphere than central Yangshuo.

Can I use Guilin as a base for Yangshuo and Longji?

You can, but splitting your stay is usually better. Staying overnight in Yangshuo and Longji reduces travel time and lets you experience these areas early in the morning and after most day visitors have left.

A panoramic view of a winding glass skywalk overlooking dramatic karst mountains and valleys in Guangxi, China, under a cloudy sky.
Visitors stroll along a scenic mountain skywalk, taking in breathtaking views of the iconic karst landscape that makes southern China one of the country’s most spectacular natural destinations.

Why Where You Stay in Guilin Matters More Than You Think

Guilin is not one city clustered together. When people talk about the Guilin region, they’re generally talking about one of four destinations: Guilin City in the north, Yangshuo 60 km south of Guilin, Xingping farther down the Li River, and Longsheng (where you’ll find the Dragon’s Backbone Rice Terraces) about 80 km northwest of Guilin.

Visiting each place feels like stepping into entirely different worlds with different vibes/paces/prices/explosions of nearby attractions. If you spend your nights in Guilin but want to see Yangshuo’s countryside, you’re looking at a 1.5 hour bus ride each way. If you spend your nights in Longsheng but try to visit the Li River cruise, you’re looking at a travel headache every morning.

A rule of thumb most travelers will give you is to split up your nights. On a typical 5–7 day trip, you’ll want to spend 1–2 nights in Guilin, 2 nights in Yangshuo, and 1 night in Longsheng. But it depends on your priorities!

My daughter poses in traditional attire against the stunning karst landscape of Guangxi, where serene lakes, limestone peaks, and unique architecture create a picture-perfect setting.

Final Verdict: Where Should You Stay in Guilin?

If you only have time to visit Guilin once: Spend 1–2 nights in Guilin City (arrival & logistics + Li river & Elephant Trunk Hill) before enjoying the scenic countryside payoff of Yangshuo.

If you are returning to Guilin, or can spend more time: Skip Guilin city altogether. Add more nights closer to Yangshuo’s Yulong River. For longest trip: tack on a night in Longsheng to see the rice terraces.

For photographers/outdoor enthusiasts: Spend as much time as possible in Xingping and Longsheng (Dazhai). These two areas of the country have the most unique and uncrowded scenery.
