Built more than 800 years ago, Pingjiang Road is a charming historic canal district representing everything travelers hope to see when they think of Suzhou. Narrow stone streets line canals where tiny wooden boats drift lazily under ancient bridges, and traditional houses with white walls and black roofs border either side.

The whole area has kind of an old painting vibe.

One of my favorite things about Pingjiang Road is that you could literally get lost in this area for days. Small cafes, tea houses, local artisan shops and hidden boutiques line every street, making it my favorite area to wander around Suzhou.

Tip: Try to visit early in the morning to avoid tour groups, or visit after dark to see how locals spend their evenings while lanterns illuminate the canals.

Although there aren’t as many hotels here compared to Guanqian Street, you will find much more charm in the ones that are available.

Complete with rooftop bars, lake-view hotel rooms, and high-end shopping, stay here if these types of holidays are more your thing.

Jinji Lake is also hugely popular with business visitors, families and couples.
