• Best time to visit

  March to May and late September to November are generally considered the best times to walk around/shopping/etc. Spring can be rainy, but overall the weather is mild. Autumn tends to be cooler and less humid than summer. Summers are hot and humid, and winters can be chilly due to humidity.

• High season

  Peak sightseeing seasons are spring and autumn. Hotel occupancy and transportation volume can also increase during periods around Chinese New Year, the May Day holiday, the National Day Golden Week holiday which starts in early October, large-scale exhibitions and school-leave travel seasons. Shanghai’ railway stations are especially crowded during major national holidays.

• Festivals & events

  Festivals, exhibitions and shopping events occur regularly throughout the year in Shanghai. Major times include Chinese New Year, Shanghai Tourism Festival, major exhibitions at the National Exhibition and Convention Center and Shanghai New International Expo Centre and China International Import Expo in November. The dates of 2026 CIIE will be 5–10 November. It's best to confirm around your dates of travel.

• When to book

  Book as soon as your travel dates are firm, particularly if you are looking to stay near The Bund, Shanghai Disneyland or at hotels close to major exhibition centres. Try to book further in advance during Chinese public holidays, school holidays, major trade fairs, or for the November China International Import Expo period, which can see spikes of demand focused around certain areas.

• Typical prices

  Shanghai offers lodging at nearly every price range. People's Square, East Nanjing Road and outlying Jing' an areas typically offer the widest variety, while waterfront hotels closest to The Bund and high-rise buildings in Lujiazui tend to be priced highest. Xintiandi falls typically in the upper mid-range and high-end category. Disney hotels are typically priced higher than most independent hotels that are not within walking distance of the resort. Prices also vary greatly depending on weekday, season, view of the room and exhibition schedule.

• Getting around

  Choose a hotel within a genuinely manageable walk of a metro entrance rather than relying only on the district name. Metro Line 2 is especially useful because it serves People’s Square, East Nanjing Road, Jing’an, Lujiazui, Hongqiao Airport, Hongqiao Railway Station and Pudong Airport. The English-language SH MaaS app supports metro, bus, ferry and other transport planning, while foreign bank cards can be linked through supported payment platforms.

• Airport access

  Pick a hotel within walking distance of a metro station, not just located in the right district. Line 2 in particular is helpful as it passes People’s Square, East Nanjing Road, Jing'An, Lujiazui, Hongqiao Airport, Hongqiao Railway Station and Pudong Airport. • Railway access

  Main Shanghai high speed rail station is Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (Metro lines 2, 10 and 17). Shanghai Railway Station is more centrally located (Metro Lines 1, 3 and 4), and Shanghai South Railway Station is served by Metro Lines 1, 3 and 15. Note which station you are going to by checking the entire station name on your ticket. Shanghai has many primary and secondary train stations.

• Family stays

  Aim for short metro walks to family-friendly places, bigger rooms/connecting rooms/serviced apartments with laundry facilities and/or kitchenette. If you want quieter neighborhoods, look for places in Xintiandi or the Former French Concession. For bigger rooms and/or serviced residences, check out Lujiazui which has several modern hotels and apartments. If you're going to Disneyland, think about staying one or two nights at the resort instead of commuting into Shanghai each day from central locations. Check maximum occupancy for rooms as well as bed configuration, if a hotel includes breakfast and whether they have cots or roll-away beds.

• Accessibility

  The Shanghai metro is equipped with elevators and tactile flooring. However, step-free access and elevator positions can be inconsistent, especially in older metro stations and buildings. If you have limited mobility, ensure your hotel entrance, guest room, and bathroom are accessible and ask the property what step-free route is best to get to the hotel from the nearest station. Elevators can still require long walks when at large interchange stations.

Input guest names precisely as they appear in the passports, keep the booking confirmation and check if breakfast, taxes, deposits, extra beds and cancellation are included in the price. Double-check luggage-storage and check-in policies with the hotel if you arrive early or leave late.
