Why Day Trips Work So Well for Young Families
Ok .. hear us out. With kids this young, why travel further than you need to?
Travelling with toddlers and young kids is made for day trips. Kids under 10 love routine. One night out of their bed isn’t too stressful. No heavy luggage through airports. When they inevitably meltdown on day 3 of your dream 7-day itinerary, you can always head home knowing you’ve seen the highlights.
Essentially: Day trips from Singapore let you travel with the relaxed confidence of staying in Singapore, but with the wonder and excitement of exploring somewhere new.
At the end of the day: The destinations on this list are close, interesting, and laidback. If your kid passes the point of exhaustion at 2pm, you can wrap up early and head home guilt-free.
Legoland Malaysia, Johor Bahru — The Ultimate Kid Crowd-Pleaser

Travel time: 45–60 mins by car/shuttle bus
Ah LEGOLAND Malaysia. If you have a child under the age of 10, chances are you’ve already considered visiting Legoland Malaysia near Johor Bahru at some point… but it bears repeating just how good it is.
Best day trips from Singapore with kids full stop? You bet. Best day trips with kids under 10 near Singapore? You better.
LEGOLAND Malaysia is Singapore’s (only?) neighboring Southeast Asia’s first Legoland park, and it’s entirely tailored to children under 10 years old. For context, large theme parks like Universal Studios often exclude toddlers from up to half the attractions due to height requirements. Legoland gears every single aspect of the park towards younger kids.
Built from over 110 million LEGO bricks, Miniland Malaysia is worth the entrance fee alone.
What your kids will love:
- LEGOLAND Malaysia (obviously)
- LEGO City (interactive water play, driving school, LEGO fire academy)
- The Kingdoms zone (& its gentle dragon roller coaster — scary enough for most 4-year-olds)
- LEGO NINJAGO The Ride (interactive 4D coaster)
Pro-tip for parents: Buy tickets online ahead of time. Arrive right at opening and knock out the popular rides before 11am when the lines get longer. Then let them burn off energy at the water park during afternoon siesta time.
How to get there: Book a licensed shuttle bus departing from Queen Street Terminal. You can also drive through the Causeway. Alternatively, JB Sentral is accessible by foot and taxi via Woodlands Checkpoint.
Batam, Indonesia — Beach, Relaxation, and Easy Water Fun

Travel time: 45 minutes by ferry from Harbourfront
Craving sand between your toes and relaxation on the beach with minimum hassle? Head to Batam, one of our favourite underrated day trips from Singapore with kids.
Hop on a ferry from Singapore and you’ll land at one of Batam’s many resort-style beach clubs in minutes. These Indonesian island clubs offer pool/spa/resort-calibre service at a fraction of Singapore prices.
Popular options include Nongsa Point Marina and Montigo Resorts. Many resorts offer half-day day passes that give you access to their pools, beaches, watersports, and dining — allowing you arrive, play, eat, swim, and get home in time for kiddo bedtime.
What your kids will love:
- Shallow lagoon pools and splash zones for young children
- Jet skiing and banana boat rides (exciting enough for the older or braver under-10 set)
- Sandcastles and lush island beaches
Pro-tip for parents: Sort out the logistics before you go. Many resorts offer day packages including round trip ferry transfers, lunch, pool/beach passes, and more. Throw on some reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes and call it good.
How to get there: Departure ferries leave from Harbourfront Ferry Terminal. Book tickets online in advance if you’re travelling on the weekend — ferries can sell out.
Malacca (Melaka), Malaysia — History That Kids Actually Find Cool
![Best Day Trips From Singapore With Kids Under 10 ([year]) 7 Christ Church Melaka historic red Dutch colonial church in Malacca Malaysia UNESCO heritage site](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/pexels-phearak-chamrien-254417215-13066617-1-1024x769.jpg)
Travel time: 2.5–3 hours by coach/car
Put simply: Melaka offers things to do with kids that’ll make the little ones say “cool!” not “boring!”
Malacca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, unsurprisingly, attracts plenty of tourists looking to learn about Malaysia’s colonial past. History museums are obviously not the first thing on your kids’ wishlists… but that doesn’t mean Malacca is a total write-off.
Instead of museum visits, enjoy Malacca on a nostalgic trishaw ride while weaving through Jonker Street’s colourful shops. Stop for gooey peanut pancakes at a roadside cart, explore the hilltop Portuguese fort ruins at A Famosa, and marvel at Cheng Hoon Teng’s glittering Chinese decorations.
What your kids will love:
- Colourful trishaw rides through the streets of Malacca (drivers blast music too)
- Jonker Walk night market (if you’re overnighting overnight in Malacca)
- Malacca’s Dinosaur Park at Taming Sari Tower
- Cheng Hoon Teng Temple’s shiny dragons EVERYWHERE
Pro-tip for parents: Book early morning express coaches from Larkin Terminal (accessible by SKRV shuttle bus from JB). You can also book private cars easily. Avoid week-long Malaysian school holidays here though — inbound traffic into Malacca can take 2x as long.
How to get there by public transport: Take a Transnasional or other affiliate coach from JB/Melaka/Larkin Terminal. For ease and comfort, we recommend booking a private hire car with driver.
Bintan, Indonesia — Nature, Animals, and Resort Luxury
![Best Day Trips From Singapore With Kids Under 10 ([year]) 8 Bintan Lagoon Resort](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Bintan-Lagoon-Resort-1024x686.jpg)
Travel time: 1 hour by ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal
Best kept secret among Singapore families? One of our favourite day trips from Singapore with kids is Bintan.
Located on Indonesia’s southern resort island just off Singapore’s east coast, Bintan island has everything from secluded beaches to splashy kid-friendly water parks and even animal interactions for the truly adventurous.
Treasure Bay Bintan’s water park is particularly incredible for families with kids under 10. It boasts Southeast Asia’s largest man-made lagoon at 6.3 hectares and it’s incredibly fun for the whole family. On the adventures side, the Elephant Safari at Bintan is hugely popular with families too. Book a day tour to feed, bathe, and even ride elephants with conservation-first herd Ngai。
What your kids will love:
- Crystal Lagoon water sports and swimming
- Meeting/listening to elephants at the Elephant Safari
- Quad biking and go-karts (suitable for older kids)
- Beach bonfires (extend into the evening)
Pro-tip for parents: Skip the chaos at Harbourfront Ferry Terminal and take Bintan ferries from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal instead. It’s a short MRT ride out east, but less crowded and just as convenient. Head down early and many resorts will offer all inclusive packages with ferry transfers included.
Desaru Coast, Malaysia — Adventure Park Meets Beach Holiday
![Best Day Trips From Singapore With Kids Under 10 ([year]) 9 Aerial view of Desaru Coast beach with resorts and coastline in Johor Malaysia family-friendly beach destination near Singapore](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/pexels-anaussieinvietnam-31768450-1024x768.jpg)
Travel time: 1.5 hours by car or 45 mins by ferry + shuttle
Desaru Coast isn’t your parents’ Desaru Beach. In recent years Johor’s eastern slice of coast has been revamped with a MASSIVE waterpark — now ranked as one of the best water parks in Asia.
Pair swimming under gravity-defying water slides with soft sandy beaches (complete with beachside restaurants), and you’ve got yourself a pretty epic day.
Desaru Coast’s Adventure Waterpark plays home to over 20 rides and attractions, from kiddie-friendly pool slides to adrenaline-pumping thrill rides. Outside of the waterpark, Desaru’s wide beaches are lined with shady casuarina trees and are gorgeous.
What your kids will love:
- Slide into Desaru’s wave pool and lazy river at Adventure Waterpark
- Wide sandy beach ( quieter than your average Singaporean beach — we’re looking at you, Sentosa)
- Go-karts at Desaru Fruit Farm, just down the road from Desaru Waterpark
Practical Tips for Day Trips From Singapore With Young Children
Ok, let’s get practical. How do you actually pull off the perfect day trip with toddlers and young kids?
Pack light, pack sensible
Sunscreen. Wet wipes. Change of clothes. Snacks. Downloaded shows on a portable charger. Toddlers overheat like it’s nobody’s business — bring a small handheld fan they can wave around.
Leave early
Seriously. We can’t stress this enough. Border queues at Woodlands/ Tuas can take ages on the weekends. If you’re doing a ferry day trip, the earliest ferry is ALWAYS the least crowded.
Check passports are up-to-date
Both Malaysia and Indonesia require you to have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport when entering the country. Toddlers grow up fast — keep electronic copies of your kids’ passports on your phone too, just in case.
Manage expectations
Toddlers hate surprises. Set your kids up for success by explaining where you’re going and what you’ll see/do on the journey there. Maintaining that sunshine and rainbows attitude can be tough when you’ve spent 3 hours in traffic, but it’ll be worth it.
Leave with plenty of time to spare.
If you don’t start heading home by 4–5pm, you’re going to regret it. Factor in inbound traffic and you’re looking at arriving back in Singapore after 7–8pm. Overtired kids + late nights do not mix.
Final Thoughts
Living in Singapore gives you amazing access to some of South East Asia’s most incredible family-friendly destinations. Whether it’s LEGOLAND Malaysia near Johor Bahru, peaceful jungle retreats on Bintan Island, or sun-soaked Desaru beaches — there’s a whole world of kid-approved attractions just waiting to surprise, delight, and inspire your children.
Sure, Singapore itself is a pretty special place to explore with kids — but the best place to travel with kids under 10 is ANYWHERE with your kids under 10.
Grab the snacks, pack the sunscreen, and start your adventure. Happy travelling!
