Hua Hin vs Cha-Am: Best Beach Town for Families in 2026

When planning a family beach vacation in Thailand, if you’ve started researching your options beyond Phuket and Koh Samui, chances are you’ve discovered two places located next to each other on Thailand’s Gulf of Thailand coast: Hua Hin and Cha-Am. Sitting just 25 kilometres apart and sharing the same coastline, these neighbouring towns offer surprisingly different family beach vacation experiences.

So which beach town is best for families? As with most things, the honest answer is that it depends on your family. In this post, we compare both destinations across all the factors parents care about most: beach quality and safety, accommodations, kid-friendly activities, food and restaurants, cost, and overall vibe.

By the end, there will be no questions remaining about whether Hua Hin or Cha-Am is right for you — and where you should book.

Know Your Destinations

Before we jump into our comparative guide, let’s review what Hua Hin and Cha-Am are all about.

What Is Hua Hin?

A peaceful morning at Hua Hin Beach, where calm waves and wide sandy shores make it ideal for families with young kids.

Hua Hin is one of Thailand’s oldest beach resorts. Located about 200 km south of Bangkok in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, it became a royal retreat when King Rama VII commissioned the Klai Kangwon Palace in 1926. You can still feel that elegance today — Hua Hin has a very sophisticated, relaxed vibe. Now a full-service resort town, Hua Hin has international hotels, a lively night market, train station connectivity, and year-round popularity as Bangkokians’ weekend getaway of choice.

All of that means Hua Hin has great infrastructure for families: clean streets, strong transportation options, modern hospitals within driving distance, and plenty of activities catered toward kids and tourists.

What Is Cha-Am?

An aerial view of Cha-Am’s coastline, known for its long sandy beaches, laidback atmosphere, and local Thai seaside charm.

Cha-Am is its quieter, more locally-oriented neighbour, located in Phetchaburi Province just north of Hua Hin. Whereas Hua Hin attracts tourists from around the world, Cha-Am sees mostly Thai domestic visitors — especially families and groups coming down from Bangkok on long weekends. The atmosphere is laidback and leisurely. Families stake their beach towels alongside vendors selling inflatable beach toys for rent, noodle stalls set up along the promenade, and it’s just easier to lazily sway along with the casual energy.

Cha-Am is by no means undeveloped — you’ll find hotels, seafood restaurants, beach chairs, and bathrooms along the beachfront. Rather, Cha-Am just hasn’t had the international tourist gloss hammered into it like Hua Hin has. And many families love it for that reason.

Beach Quality and Safety for Kids

Ah, the beach. This is where every parent’s mind goes first, and for good reason.

Hua Hin Beach is approximately 5 km long, stretching out wide and sunny. The sand is pale, and the water near the shore is typically calm and shallow — great peace of mind for little ones paddling in the shallows. The beach itself is nicely maintained, with several guarded portions near the larger hotels. A word of caution: jellyfish tend to appear seasonally (mainly during Thailand’s rainy season from May to October) and water conditions can change depending on the weather — be sure to verify conditions with your child in the water!

Cha-Am Beach actually spans a little longer than Hua Hin — closer to 7 km — but it’s also wider than average. Many parents find the sand coarser here, but the water is typically shallower for longer as you move away from the shore. Cha-Am’s beach also has a party atmosphere on the weekends, with vendors renting beach chairs, motorized swan pedal boats, and giant inflatable rings. It’s noisier and less manicured than Hua Hin, but that comes with the territory of being popular with Thai families.

Winner: Tie. Hua Hin has the edge on beach maintenance and ambiance, but Cha-Am has the edge on shallow water distance from shore and cheap beachside activities.

Family-Friendly Activities and Attractions

Let’s look at some of our family-focused favourites in both Hua Hin and Cha-Am.

Hua Hin Family-Friendly Activities

As mentioned above, Hua Hin has really invested in developing children’s activities beyond the beach.

  • Vana Nava Hua Hin Water Jungle — Easily the best water park in Thailand, featuring waterslides and attractions for all ages including an entire kids’ area. If your kids are older than 4 years, this will be a huge draw.
  • Hua Hin Hills Vineyard — Zip-lining and scenic views through a vineyard is a big hit with tweens.
  • Cicada Market & Night Market — Both family-friendly night markets with enough lights that you can easily navigate with kids. Food stalls, crafts, and live music galore.
  • Hua Hin Railway Station — Thailand’s most beautiful train station is worth the visit for inquisitive kids. The royal waiting room is spectacular.
  • Black Mountain Water Park — Another great water park option just outside of town with wave pools and kids’ splash areas.
  • Beach Horse Riding — A Hua Hin classic that will be remembered years later.

Cha-Am Family-Friendly Activities

Cha-Am has fewer built-up attractions, but families in the know will have a great time.

  • Rentals on the Beach — Swan pedal boats, inflatable beach toys, jet skis (adults only), and more are available all along the beach at low prices.
  • Kaeng Krachan National Park — Thailand’s largest national park is only about 50 km from Cha-Am. There are family-friendly hikes, bird watching, and waterfall treks that older kids will love.
  • Maruekhathaiyawan Palace — Built in 1923 for King Rama VI, this gorgeous teak palace along the coast between Cha-Am and Hua Hin is fun to explore and will hold your kids’ attention.
  • Local Weekend Markets — Shopping for Thai snacks in local markets is always more authentic (and cheaper) than hotel-area tourist shops.

Winner: Hua Hin, by a mile. Hua Hin blows Cha-Am out of the water if you have younger children and are looking for activities beyond sun and sand. If your kids are older and you prefer roaming outdoors, Cha-Am will work.

Accommodation for Families

Hua Hin Hotels and Resorts

Devasom Hua Hin, a charming boutique beachfront resort known for its elegant colonial-style design, peaceful atmosphere, and family-friendly setting.

Hua Hin has some of Thailand’s best accommodations outside of Phuket. International hotel chains with family rooms and kids’ clubs are plentiful, including Marriott, Anantara, InterContinental, Hyatt Regency, and Centara. A range of mid-tier options also have family packages including breakfast and complimentary activities for kids.

Speaking of villa-style accommodations with private pools (the gold standard for families with young children), you’ll be pleased to know Hua Hin has no shortage of incredible options, especially if you’re willing to stay on the outskirts of town by the hills.

Cha-Am Hotels and Resorts

Cha-Am’s accommodations are more focused on Thai-owned hotels and guesthouses, with some older resort-style hotels mixed in. While a couple large resorts like Dusit Thani Hua Hin (literally located just down the road in Hua Hin) offer world-class resorts with kids’ clubs, most accommodations in Cha-Am are more basic than you’ll find in Hua Hin.

Budget-conscious families will have a great time in Cha-Am, as you can score clean, roomy family rooms at a small fraction of the cost in Hua Hin.

Winner: Without hesitation, Hua Hin. Both quality and range of family accommodations in Hua Hin are superior. Cha-Am wins in affordability for families on a budget.

Food and Dining with Kids

Let’s be honest: food is everything with kids.

Hua Hin has the edge here with a diverse mix of Thai food alongside Western, Japanese, and international options. We love the Chatchai Night Market for families — you can grab grilled seafood, pad thai, mango sticky rice, fresh fruit, and so much more while meandering around with kids. Hua Hin also offers more Western restaurants if your kids are picky.

Cha-Am’s dining is almost exclusively Thai food, which is fantastic if you have adventurous eaters. (My kids love Pad See Ew as much as the next Thai child.) The seafood here is incredible and extremely cheap. Families don’t have to worry about Cha-Am being too loud or busy — it is, and kids tend to thrive in the casual chaos of beachfront dining.

Winner: If you family has picky eaters or mixed dietary preferences, Hua Hin has more options. If you’re eating Thai food and seafood, Cha-Am will save you tons of money and feeds you better.

Getting Around with Kids

Both Hua Hin and Cha-Am are easily reachable from Bangkok by road or train.

  • By car: Hua Hin is a 2.5–3 hour drive from Bangkok; Cha-Am is a 2–2.5 hour drive. Don’t worry — Highway 4 is a pretty simple drive.
  • By train: Hua Hin has its own train station with direct service from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Train Station. Trains take about 4–5 hours. Cha-Am also has its own train station, but there are fewer train services than in Hua Hin.
  • By bus: Both towns can be reached from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai).

If you and your family are flying into Thailand, you’ll likely land in either Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok Intl.) or Don Mueang (Bangkok PDx) Airport. Renting a car or taking a private transfer is by far the easiest way to travel with kids and luggage.

Final Verdict

All things considered, Hua Hin is objectively the better destination for international families visiting Thailand. Hua Hin wins on activities for young children, accommodations, convenient dining options, and overall beach experience. That being said, Cha-Am is a wonderful town with unique appeal for families who don’t mind sticking to a tighter travel budget or who have older kids.

No matter which beach town you choose, both Hua Hin and Cha-Am offer beautiful coastlines on the Gulf of Thailand with warm, calm water, fresh seafood, and a generous serving of that special Thai hospitality. You really can’t go wrong. Just go experience it for yourself. 😉
