Osaka is one of the easiest cities to get around in Japan due to its fantastic train system. Whether you’re visiting Osaka for food, shopping, theme parks, day trips to Kyoto and Nara, staying near a train station will save you so much time and hassle.
That being said, you don’t need to break the bank to find a centrally-located hotel. Osaka has tons of cheap hotels near the big train stations that are clean, comfy, and even modern. Bonus points if they’re within walking distance to JR train lines, subway stations, and/or the airport train!

What to Expect From Budget Hotels in Osaka

If you’re staying in Japan for the first time keep these tips in mind:

Rooms Are Tiny

Japan’s budget hotel rooms can be extremely tiny. Sometimes you can’t fully open two big suitcases.

But they make up for it by being very efficient with space and storage.

Clean is Universal

Japanese hotels are usually spotless. Even the cheap hotels are incredibly clean. I’ve stayed at a bunch of no frills business hotels throughout Osaka that were cleaner than nicer hotels I stayed at in other countries.

Coin Laundry Available

Budget hotels typically have coin laundry machines. Laundrymat.net helped me find them. Super convenient if you’re going on a longer trip.

Pajamas and toiletries provided

Japanese hotels commonly provide:

  • Toothbrushes
  • Razors
  • Pajamas
  • Shampoo and body wash

It helps to cut down on what you need to pack.

How to Stay at Cheap Hotels in Osaka

Reserve in Advance if Traveling During Peak Seasons

If possible, Osaka hotel reservations during these seasons should be made well in advance.

  • Cherry Blossom Season (Spring)
  • Golden Week (Spring)
  • Autumn Color Season (Fall)
  • Year End/New Years (Winter)

Reservations during these seasons will get extremely expensive. If you can, book as early as possible.

Don’t Trust “Walks Naturally” Too Far

Osaka has many hotels that advertise “near station”. However near can mean a 10 minute walk if you’re carrying luggage.

When I search for hotels, I usually look for ones that are within a 5 minute walk of a station entrance.

Try Shin-OSAKA for Cheaper Hotels

If you are finding Osaka too expensive to stay near the city center, Shin-OSAKA might be a good alternative for you.

Shin-OSAKA can often provide cheaper hotels while still being accessible to many places.

Namba or Umeda; which should I stay at?

Ultimately, this decision is going to depend on your travel style.

Stay at Namba if:

  • You like street food
  • You like nightlife
  • You like lively atmospheres
  • You want convenient access to Dotonbori

Stay at Umeda if:

  • You plan on doing day trips
  • You plan on using JR frequently
  • You prefer a quieter atmosphere
  • You are traveling with children

If you ask me, I prefer Namba for short trips and Umeda for longer stays with family.

Final Thoughts on Budget Hotels in Osaka Near Station

Osaka is one of the easiest cities to travel around if you stay in the correct area. Being close to a station will save you time, stress, and make your visit overall enjoyable!

What’s great about Osaka is you can still find really cheap hotels that are super convenient. There are tons of affordable hotels that are clean, newly built, and within walking distance to the main train station.

If I were to recommend the best area for first-time visitors I would lean towards Namba because of the food, atmosphere, and transportation. However if comfort and day trips are more your thing I would suggest Umeda and Shin-Osaka too.

Wherever you decide to stay in Osaka just remember staying near a station will make your life a lot easier.
