9 Best Love Hotels in Kyoto (2026) for Couples and Romantic Stays

Kyoto may first come to mind when you think of ancient temples, rustic ryokans, roaming bamboo forests, and quaint tea houses. But aside from the well-known cultural attractions, Kyoto also has a surprisingly chic and discreet array of love hotels perfect for couples looking for privacy, romance, and something just a little different for an overnight stay.

If you’re envisioning dingy hotel rooms with shady alley entrances (don’t get me wrong I’ve stayed in those too), most love hotels in Japan today are actually clean, well-appointed, surprisingly luxurious, and full of amenities. Common features include jacuzzis, karaoke machines, ambient lighting, massage chairs, themed rooms/decor, private parking spots, and king-sized beds to rival any boutique hotel.

From luxury-themed suites to modern boutique-style stays, Kyoto’s love hotels offer couples a surprisingly stylish and private accommodation experience across the city.

Staying in a love hotel in Kyoto can actually be a really fun experience for couples. It’s also typically cheaper than staying in one of the luxury ryokans found in tourist-heavy areas like Gion or Higashiyama.

In this post I’ve compiled some of my favorite love hotels in Kyoto ranging from chic boutique-style hotels to affordable love hotels near Kyoto Station to luxe rooms for celebrating an anniversary.

Why Stay in a Love Hotel in Kyoto?

Love hotels aren’t what many foreign visitors expect. You can be pleasantly surprised how nice they can be.

Kyoto lodging in general becomes pretty pricey during cherry blossom season, koyo season, and holiday weekends. Many love hotels have rooms larger than your average business hotel for the same price. You’ll often find a bigger bathtub, more privacy, and amenities.

Reasons couples may visit love hotels in Kyoto:

  • Queen or King Beds
  • Hot tubs or large bathroom
  • Karaoke machines
  • Inexpensive night stays
  • 24/7 entry
  • Privacy
  • Themed rooms
  • Spacious rooms vs your average hotels

They often offer free booze, skincare products, snacks, soap, and room service as well.

If you’re traveling with your significant other and don’t mind the concept, they can honestly be some of the best places you’ll stay in Japan.

My personal favorite thing about this hotel is it won’t feel as intimidating if you’re checking into a love hotel for the first time in Japan. It has a more low key vibe that feels more like a hotel rather than flashy gimmicks.

Things to Know Before Booking a Love Hotel in Kyoto

Love Hotels Have Adult Themes/Sexual Themes

While some places are tastefully decorated boutique style hotels for couples, others can get VERY explicit with themes and décor. Try checking out some photos before booking if this is a concern.

Love Hotels have Overnight Stay vs Rest Stay Pricing

Some Japanese love hotels have two separate pricing systems.

“Rest” is for daytime short stays

“Stay” is for overnight guests

Be sure you are booking the right type of reservation.

Check-in Times Can Start Late at Night

Keep in mind that some hotels may only allow check-in after certain evening hours. Usually this will be around 8PM or later if you plan on staying overnight.

They May Not Allow Groups/Families

While love hotels are made with couples in mind, some will deny group reservations or travelers with children.

Accessibility by Public Transportation Varies

The majority of Kyoto love hotels can be found south of central Kyoto in the southern Kyoto and Fushimi areas.

Are Love Hotels Safe in Kyoto Japan?

As with any city, use your best judgement when selecting a place to stay. That being said, LOVE Hotels in Japan are generally safe to use, very clean, and run by professionals.

Japan has been perfecting their love hotel business for decades. Many places are kept to a high standard and some tourists actually prefer them to traditional cheap hostels and hotels. Rooms and bathrooms tend to be bigger and cleaner than the average budget hotel in Japan. The biggest adjustment is usually just understanding the idea of love hotels.

Final Verdict

While ryokans and machiya may come to mind first when thinking about Japanese accommodations, love hotels are a whole other side of Japan’s lodging culture.

If you’re traveling with your partner and are looking for something playful, private, and often luxuriously appointment when staying at a decent love hotel in Kyoto can actually become one of your highlights of the trip.

Hotel Lotus Kyoto South excels at luxury rooms and themed suites. Hotel Fine Garden Kyoto Minami is great if you’re looking for affordable rooms and a convenient location. Hotel & Spa Lotus Modern Kyoto and Hotel La Siesta Kyoto have modern boutique vibes that couples may enjoy.
