• Best time to visit

  Late June to early October sees the finest weather for hiking, mountain viewpoints and the greatest selection of open cable cars and railways. July and August are the warmest months, however they also have the biggest crowds. September has the advantage of cooler hiking weather and quieter villages. The ski season runs from late December through to March. However snow conditions and weather determine if any particular slopes or lifts are open. April, May and November are quieter months but are less ideal if you are visiting Berner Oberland for the first time since some mountain transport and seasonal activities may have stopped for the winter.

• High season

  July and August are the peak summer season with lesser peaks during European school holidays. Demand peaks again over Christmas and New Year in the winter, and again during the main ski season in January and February. During the International Lauberhorn Races Wengen can be particularly crowded. Grindelwald also sees an increase in visitors during the World Snow Festival. Hotel room shortages can also occur during popular summer sporting events and weekends with good weather in September.

• Festivals & events

  It is defined more by sporting events and cultural festivals than by exhibitions and fairs. Some of the most important annual recurring events are the International Lauberhorn Races in Wengen in January, the World Snow Festival in Grindelwald (January) or the INFERNO Triathlon through the Bernese Oberland (August) and Jungfrau- Marathon from Interlaken towards Kleine Scheidegg (September). Dates of these events change annually. It is recommended that you look at the official calendar prior to booking travel arrangements. Demand during these weekends can soar, especially in Wengen, Grindelwald, Mürren and Interlaken.

• When to book

  Book four to six months ahead if travelling in July, August, over Christmas and New Year or during the peak ski weeks. For Wengen or Mürren it makes sense to book six months+ in advance. There's less room available in these villages than Interlaken or Grindelwald. Book particularly early if visiting for the Lauberhorn Races, World Snow Festival, INFERNO Triathlon or Jungfrau-Marathon. If your dates are flexible and you plan to visit in May, June, October or November you can probably book later. However, check that the lifts and railways will be running.

• Typical prices

  For planning purposes we've found rooms under CHF 180 / night to be budget-friendly for the area, CHF 180–350 to be mid-range, CHF 350–600 to be upper-range and rooms over CHF 600 to be luxury. This is based on our editorial teams planning bands, not live averages from the market. Hotels will increase prices much higher during summer weekends, ski breaks and large events. Interlaken has the widest variety of pricing. Rooms with views often cost more, especially in Wengen, Mürren and Grindelwald. Check if things like breakfast, local tourist tax and cancellation flexibility are included before comparing prices.

• Getting around

  You will not need a car for any trip itineraries in the Jungfrau Region. Interlaken Ost is the main train station and trains head to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald from there. Two towns within the region, Wengen and Mürren are inaccessible to cars. Visitors can reach these car-free towns only via connecting mountain railways or cable-car services. Plan national trips using the SBB app or timetable. Check the Jungfrau operating- information page prior to heading to the mountains. Lift times change frequently due to weather conditions, maintenance work and opening times according to season. Compare single journey fares to the three- to eight-day Jungfrau Travel Pass if you plan on taking multiple excursions.

• Airport access

  Zurich Airport normally provides easiest international access (railway connections to Bern and Interlaken Ost). Geneva Airport and EuroAirport Basel are also useful albeit normally requiring longer railway connections. From Interlaken Ost you will need to transfer onto the regional train to either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen; from Lauterbrunnen continue by mountain railway to either Wengen or by the appropriate cable-car/railway connection to Mürren. Allow plenty of time transferring when children, skis or lots of luggage are involved.

• Railway access

  Interlaken Ost is the main rail hub for the Jungfrau Region. Trains from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald of the Bernese Oberland Railway usually run all year round. Change trains at Lauterbrunnen for the Wengernalp Railway to reach Wengen. Jungfraujoch can be accessed from either Grindelwald Terminal and the Eiger Express or from Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. Check last evening connections if you are staying in a mountain village. Cable cars and mountain railways often cease operations before intercity trains.

• Family stays

  Families should consider apartments or family rooms that have separate bedrooms, kitchen facilities and laundry services if you are staying four nights or more. If your main destination is family entertainment, Grindelwald has the widest variety of apartments for families and activities. If you want to explore on both sides of the valley with your family, staying at Lauterbrunnen may be most convenient. If you stay in Wengen or Mürren it is best to stay near the station unless hotels specifically advise that they will pick up luggage. Don't forget to compare policies on child-fares: While the Jungfrau Travel Pass charges a set price for children ages six to fifteen, some Swiss family discounts cannot be used with certain regional passes.

• Accessibility

  Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is designated as step-free travel but Grindelwald Terminal and the Eiger Express are accessible. Some mountain stations in-between, hiking trails and older hotels are not step-free. Wengen and Mürren as well as part of Grindelwald have very steep streets that may be difficult if you're travelling by wheelchair or with limited mobility. Double check your route from station to hotel and enquire with the property directly on lifts, entrance steps and accessible rooms/bathrooms and luggage transfer.

• Payment tips

  The local currency is the Swiss franc. Credit/debit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, ticket offices and supermarkets and contactless payments are widely used. Some businesses accept euros but you will normally be given change in Swiss francs and the exchange rate may be poor. Keep a small amount of cash for mountain huts, small cafés, lockers or similar where there is no card terminal. If paying by card, ask to be charged Swiss francs rather than having dynamic currency conversion applied.

• Local booking tips

  Determine if your hotel is right next to the train station or if you will have an uphill walk, local bus ride or hotel pickup. If walking, remember many towns are spread out like Grindelwald, or car-free like Wengen and Mürren.Either verify that tourist tax, breakfast and luggage pickup from train station are included. Skiers should also verify seasonal rail or lift shut downs before deciding on a home base. Depending on when you plan to ski we can generally access anything between April and November. For the 20/26 season Jungfraujoch seat reservations are required from 1 May to 31 October and will also need a valid transport ticket to use along with the reservation. Always book refundable hotels when possible as visibility in the mountains and day plans will always be weather dependent.
