Where should you stay in Guilin?
I would stay split between Guilin City Centre and Yangshuo instead of one base for the entire visit as most first-time travellers will find. Guilin City Centre allows for convenient arrival, visiting things in the city, and taking your Li River cruise. Then transfer to Yangshuo for 2-3 nights to relax and explore karst countryside around town and along the Yulong River. If you had to stay in one place though, I would choose somewhere along the Yulong River countryside near Yangshuo. Consider adding Xingping for some photography and Longji for overnight if seeing sunrise at the rice terraces is important to you.

Guilin City Centre – Best for First-Time Visitors
Guilin City Centre is where you want to stay if it's your first trip to Guilin. You'll be close to the Two Rivers and Four Lakes, Elephant Trunk Hill and plenty of restaurants, while the city's airport, rail stations and Li River cruises are all convenient from here. I'd especially recommend staying in the centre the night of your arrival, or before a morning Li River cruise. The downside is ambiance: Guilin is much more city-like than the countryside around Yangshuo. For that reason, I would combine it with staying at a second base, rather than spend all of your time in Guilin on a long trip.

Central Yangshuo was my favorite option if you want to enjoy all the scenery of southern Guangxi but don't want to sacrifice restaurants, cafes, nightlife or easy tour access. West Street is the tourism center of Yangshuo, and being close to it makes your evenings especially convenient after you're done sightseeing for the day. It's also the most practical option if you don't rent a scooter or arrange private transport. The downside is noise and crowds. If you want the Yangshuo that you see in postcards -- rice paddies, tranquil roads and mountains-viewing from your window -- book somewhere along the Yulong River instead.

If pictures of misty karst mountains and tranquil rice paddies drew you to Guilin, you should stay here. Country along the Yulong River lies outside the busiest streets in Yangshuo and trades bars and trinket shops for bamboo forests, small towns and quiet roads that are perfect for biking. Boutiques and riverside hotels factor heavily into this area's charm. You do sacrifice some convenience, but for two or three nights I think that trade-off is generally worth it. This part of Yangshuo most closely resembles the Yangshuo many travellers envision before they arrive.

Xingping is my favourite lesser-known alternative to Yangshuo town centre when scenery trumps nightlife. The small town next to one of the Li River's most recognisable stretches includes the mountain and pinnacle featured on China's 20-yuan note. Tourism has arrived in Xingping but evenings remain peaceful compared to West Street. Overnight guests also have more opportunities to visit the river early or late, before crowds of day-trippers arrive (or leave). There are fewer restaurants and hotels, but that sense of quiet is exactly why I would pick Xingping.

The terraces are shockingly quiet once day-trippers leave and you can enjoy watching sunrise and sunset, and walking through morning mist without having to wake at the crack of dawn in Guilin. We enjoyed Dazhai more for its scenery and quieter atmosphere, though Ping'an makes for an easier first visit. You will find smaller, family-run guesthouses rather than large resorts. Visit Longji for the views and adventure, not for your hotel amenities.

March to May and September to November bring the most comfortable weather conditions, lush karst vegetation and great outdoor conditions. Spring, in particular, is nice in the Li and Yulong river valleys. Autumn tends to have clearer skies and features great hiking, cycling and photo conditions.

For "peak season", this would be equivalent to booking 4–8 weeks in advance for most destinations. However, for stays in April–October in popular Yangshuo countryside lodging spots, Longji terrace hotels and guesthouses, and Chinese National holidays, book 2–3 months ahead or more. Your current guidebook wisely notes Yangshuo and Longji to be where good guesthouses go quickly.

Guilin hosts several railway stations, and is integrated into China's high speed rail network. When people talk about the Guilin region, they’re generally talking about one of four destinations: Guilin City in the north, Yangshuo 60 km south of Guilin, Xingping farther down the Li River, and Longsheng (where you’ll find the Dragon’s Backbone Rice Terraces) about 80 km northwest of Guilin.
Visiting each place feels like stepping into entirely different worlds with different vibes/paces/prices/explosions of nearby attractions. If you spend your nights in Guilin but want to see Yangshuo’s countryside, you’re looking at a 1.5 hour bus ride each way. If you spend your nights in Longsheng but try to visit the Li River cruise, you’re looking at a travel headache every morning.
A rule of thumb most travelers will give you is to split up your nights. On a typical 5–7 day trip, you’ll want to spend 1–2 nights in Guilin, 2 nights in Yangshuo, and 1 night in Longsheng. But it depends on your priorities!
Final Verdict: Where Should You Stay in Guilin?
If you only have time to visit Guilin once: Spend 1–2 nights in Guilin City (arrival & logistics + Li river & Elephant Trunk Hill) before enjoying the scenic countryside payoff of Yangshuo.
If you are returning to Guilin, or can spend more time: Skip Guilin city altogether. Add more nights closer to Yangshuo’s Yulong River. For longest trip: tack on a night in Longsheng to see the rice terraces.
For photographers/outdoor enthusiasts: Spend as much time as possible in Xingping and Longsheng (Dazhai). These two areas of the country have the most unique and uncrowded scenery.
