    Matsumoto Station is the heart of transportation in Matsumoto so it’s extremely convenient if you’re using JR trains to travel to/from Matsumoto or if you plan to day trip to Kamikochi, Takayama, or Nagano during your visit.

    The station area is bustling but never feels too crowded. There are tons of cafés, izakayas, ramen shops, bakeries, supermarkets, and more around the station area.

      Staying around the castle area is great if sightseeing is your goal.

      You feel like you are in a more historic part of town compared to around the station. Traditional-style buildings surround you along with museums, old merchant houses, and quaint streets when you wake up in the morning.

          The Alpico buses heading to Kamikochi leave from the Bus Terminal right next to the station. This makes catching the early morning bus much easier.

          If you’re planning on visiting during the following times, we recommend booking your accommodations at least two to three months in advance.

          Hotels closest to Matsumoto Station will book up first because of the transport convenience.

          If you’re planning on staying at a ryokan in Asama Onsen, we recommend booking your stay even earlier. This is especially true if you desire a room with its own private bath.

          For most people, staying near Matsumoto Station is better because you’ll have convenient access to trains, buses, restaurants and shopping, but you’ll still be within walking distance of Matsumoto Castle.

          Yes. Most attractions can be found within a 15 to 20 minute walk from Matsumoto Station. The city is extremely walkable.

          Is one night enough in Matsumoto?

          Yes, you can see all of the main sights in one night. If you have two nights in Matsumoto your schedule won’t be quite as rushed and you can also take a day trip to Kamikochi.

          Is Asama Onsen worth staying?

          Definitely! If you’re looking for an authentic Japanese ryokan experience with onsen (natural hot springs)included, Asama Onsen is one of the best places to stay near Matsumoto.


          Final Thoughts

          Where you stay in Matsumoto really depends on what kind of traveler you are. However for most tourists, Matsumoto Station is your best bet. It has easy access, convenient transportation options, plenty of accommodation choices, and walking distance to most major sightseeing spots.

          For travelers interested in history and taking photos, I recommend staying around Matsumoto Castle Area. As for those who want to relax and stay at a ryokan (Japanese inn) with authentic Japanese hot springs, Asama Onsen would be your choice.

          Regardless of where you decide to stay in Matsumoto, take your time and enjoy walking around the city. From its majestic castle to its quaint old town, breath-taking mountain views, and friendly people, Matsumoto is easily one of my favorite places in Japan and a great base to explore the Japanese Alps.
