What is Mingtang and Tiantang?
Built during the time of Wu Zetian Chinese only female emperor Mingtang was the ceremonial hall she used for political meetings. Tiantang literally means “Hall of Heaven” and was a Buddhist temple during ancient times. Today visitors can walk around inside the towers.
While originally constructed over 1000 years ago both Mingtang and Tiantang were destroyed centuries ago. The structures that stand today are reconstructions built from the archeological evidence that remained of the original buildings.

Why Visit Mingtang and Tiantang?

As soon as I stepped foot on the grounds I knew this was going to be something special.
Instead of visiting ancient ruins where everything has been destroyed Mingtang and Tiantang have found the perfect balance between historical education and modern display.
Walking around the massive open plazas lit up by bright lanterns full of glowing Chinese characters you really do feel like your stepping into some sort of movie set.
The buildings look so realistic that it really hits home how massive ancient Chinese architecture use to be. Of course, this experience is amplified when night falls as hundreds of visitors crowd the grounds to gawk at the beautiful night lights.
Expect big crowds in the evenings if you want to experience night lights at Mingtang and Tiantang.
A Unique Blend of History and Modern Experience
One thing that stood out to me immediately was how the site balances historical storytelling with modern presentation. Unlike traditional ruins, this place feels alive.

The large open plazas, glowing lanterns, and reconstructed buildings make it feel more like an experience rather than a museum.
During the evening, the atmosphere changes completely. Warm golden lights outline the buildings, red lanterns illuminate the walkways, and crowds gather to enjoy the spectacle.
The Tiantang Tower Experience
If I had to choose my favorite part of Mingtang and Tiantang it would have to be the Tiantang tower.

The tower itself is massive with several levels you can visit inside the building.
Each level of the tower features exhibits that dive deeper into the history of Mingtang and Tiantang. You will also find tons of carvings and decorations with hidden meanings that Chinese scholars from ancient times used.
My favorite part about visiting the tower is how you can look around at each level and see something new whether it be the view or more historical facts.
Standing at the top of Tiantang you are treated to a breathtaking view of the city. If you time your visit with sunset even better!
Be sure to check the events schedule before visiting Mingtang and Tiantang.

Cultural Performances and Night Shows
As I mentioned above there are usually some sort of cultural activities going on during the evening.
Depending on the day and time of year you visit Mingtang and Tiantang you may experience:
- Ancient Tang inspired dances and cultural performances.
- Beautiful light shows and lasers being shot throughout the building.
- Decorations for Chinese holiday festivals.
These are just a few reasons why I think you should experience Mingtang and Tiantang at night. There is always something going on which I think makes the experience so much better, especially if you plan on bringing kids.

Best Time to Visit
While I think you can enjoy Mingtang and Tiantang any time of day, if you have the time I would recommend visiting during two different times.
Day Time
Visiting during the day you really get to soak in all of the architectural greatness of Mingtang and Tiantang. You also don’t have to deal with as big crowds.
Night Time (Recommended)
Trust me when I say this place is a COMPLETE transformation when night falls. All of the buildings light up and it just creates this magical vibe that you have to experience yourself.
Ideally, plan your trip to Mingtang and Tiantang so that you can see it during both the day and night. You’ll get two completely different experiences in one visit.
Photography Tips to Get the Best Shots
Photography is one of my favorite past times when visiting new places. If you’re like me and love taking photos you will not be disappointed when visiting Mingtang and Tiantang.
Shoot during Blue Hour:
My favorite time to take photos at Mingtang and Tiantang is right after sunset. The sky is still orange giving you that perfect blue hue while all the lights turn on.
Use Leading Lines:
Use the stairs, walk ways, and lantern lined paths as your leading lines when composing your shots. This will draw the viewers eyes towards the main attraction.
Include People in Your Photos:
Don’t be afraid to include people in your shots. When you are taking photos of large scale buildings it can be difficult to grasp just how big they really are.
Photograph people either walking away from or towards your camera. This not only helps with scale but creates interesting photo opportunities.
Get Portrait Shot:
If you’re visiting with a significant other, take advantage of your time here and get some cool themed portrait shots. I even saw some tourists renting ancient chinese Tang clothing to wear for their photos.
Mingtang Touring Experience
Inside Mingtang is just as extravagant as it looks on the outside. Full of golden accents and detailed carvings Mingtang was meant to impose its imperial power.
Each room you walk into is massive with tall ceilings and oversized furniture. You’ll also find several throne displays, decorative carvings, and painted murals that tell stories of China’s Tang dynasty.

As you walk through Mingtang you will find informational displays that dive into the history of what went on inside this ancient building.
Like I said above Mingtang and Tiantang really know how to put on a show. Even if you aren’t that into history I promise you will have an amazing time.
