Da Nang Cathedral (Pink Church) Guide: Is It Worth Visiting in 2026?

If you have been browsing photos of central Vietnam you will likely have seen it. Nestled on a hill sits Da Nang Cathedral, a soft pastel pink church on a bright blue sky. Da Nang is well-known for this church, also nicknamed the Pink Church or “Chicken Church” (Nhà thờ Con Gà).

On our recent trip to Da Nang, we popped by after walking 10 minutes from the city center. It is one of those tourist attractions that looks so amazing online but then feel a little lackluster in person.

In this guide, I’ll share what I think about it. Whether you should visit or skip, and some tips if you decide to include it in your Da Nang itinerary.

Before entering, here is what you should know.

First Impressions: Cute Pink Iconic Church In The City

Yuyi posing in front of Da Nang Cathedral, the iconic pink church known for its French colonial Gothic design.

When we first arrived at Da Nang Cathedral you immediately notice the pastel pink color on the church. The bright pink really pops against the otherwise modern buildings in the city.

It feels almost misplaced but in a good way. The building itself is not that large compared to cathedrals you will find throughout Europe. But the gothic architecture and pointed arches with tall spires give it character.

Speaking of chickens, notice the rooster weather vane on top of the tower. That is where the Chicken Church nickname comes from. Small detail but once you know it, you see it.

Another thing I noticed right away were the streets around the church filled with café’s and cute local shops. I love this because it gives it such a “Da Nang” feel.

The city’s historic side meshes perfectly with some modern offerings creating a unique vibe.

History of Da Nang’s Pink Church

Built-in 1923 by French missionaries and colonial settlers. Their goal was to make Catholicism more prominent in central Vietnam.

Architecturally, it pulls much of its influence from European gothic designs but was built to withstand Vietnam’s hot climate. Take note of:

  • High ceilings to let heat circulate
  • Tiny windows to keep sunlight out
  • Thick walls to insulate indoor temperature

Now the color of pink is not from the original church. Europeans typically do not paint gothic churches pink. It was added years later but now it is what the church is most known for.

Fun Fact: There are several other churches throughout Vietnam painted pink. While famous here in Da Nang, it is not the only one.

My Experience Visiting The Pink Church in Da Nang

Okay, now for the truth.

Yes the church looks great in photos and yes it is a nice spot to visit if you find yourself in Da Nang.

But after walking over here and visiting in person, I do not consider this a “must-see” destination.

A peaceful street corner in Da Nang filled with local cafés and shade trees just minutes from the Pink Church.

You will spend about 10-20 minutes here total.

Maybe less.

  • Take some pictures in front
  • Walk around the sides a bit
  • Admire the architecture

That is pretty much it. Like I said, it’s not a bad stop but also not much to do.

Expect no access to inside of the church unless you catch it during mass. Walking around freely is also not permitted.

My best advice is to enjoy:

  • The pink color of the exterior
  • The blue sky contrasting it
  • Architecture itself is nice and clean

All solid photo opportunities.

If you find yourself nearby, stop by. But do not go out of your way to visit Da Nang Cathedral.

Photography Tips: Taking The Best Photos

If you are coming here for photos like most people, these tips will help you snap that Insta worthy shot.

1. Visit Early Morning

First and foremost go early morning. There will be less people and softer lighting. Mid-day sun in Da Nang is brutal.

2. Wide Angle Lens

The church is actually quite tall and skinny. Bring a wide angle lens to capture the whole building.

3. Add Foreground Layers

This one sounds counterintuitive because you want a clear shot of the church. But if you include something in the foreground like palm trees or statues it adds character. Even people walking by can look cool.

4. What You Wear Matters

Bright white, denim, and neutral colors all pair nicely with pink. (Blue would honestly look so good too, your daughter’s dress would be perfect haha.)

Location & How To Get There

Address: 156 Trần Phú, Hải Châu, Đà Nẵng 550000, Vietnam

Best Time To Visit Da Nang Cathedral

The side view of Da Nang Cathedral showcases its elegant arches and classic Gothic architectural details.

Morning (7am – 9am): Great for photos with less people.

Late afternoon: Gorgeous light but crowds will be there.

Come during scheduled mass times if you wish to enter inside.

Avoid Mid-day If Possible

Reasons why:

  • Super sunny/harsh lighting
  • Hotter
  • Tourist crowds

Conclusion: Worth Visiting?

Ready for the real answer?

Should you visit Da Nang Cathedral? :

If:

  • You are already planning to be nearby
  • Photography is your jam
  • Love architecture/churches
  • Looking for a quick stop

Don’t visit if:

  • On a tight schedule
  • Expect a large attraction
  • Hope for something interactive

To reiterate, there are quite a few pink churches throughout Vietnam. So this is not a one-of-a-kind you have to see church.

But Da Nang Cathedral is still:

  • Picturesque
  • Accessible
  • Makes for a great add-on to your Da Nang itinerary

Things To Do Nearby

Visiting on its own feels underwhelming. But you can easily pair it with some other nearby attractions to create a nice itinerary.

  • Shop at Han Market
  • See Dragon Bridge ( Night visit for fire show ).
  • Grab coffee or fresh juice by the riverside.
  • Eat local street food

How I Visited: Quick Stop or Include In Your Itinerary?

If you guessed that I did not rush over to see Da Nang Cathedral first thing. You would be correct.

We planned our day so we would pass by on our way to other attractions.

Plus majority of our visit was taking photos and walked away after 15 minutes.

In my opinion, add Da Nang Cathedral to your itinerary if you have time. But if you are squeezing every minute out of your day, it is not a “skip” but you also will not miss out if you do.

Let me know your thoughts if you end up visiting this unique pink church in Vietnam.
