Deciding which city to visit first in China is one of the most common questions I get when planning a trip to China. Should I go to Beijing or Shanghai first?

They’re both amazing cities but offer completely different vibes and attractions.

Beijing is more historic and traditional. Shanghai is modern and international.

The better question is not which one is better but rather which city fits your travel style more?

But it’s more than just those famous attractions. The city itself feels historic.

Shanghai: International Community

Unlike Beijing, Shanghai doesn’t give you that “old China” vibe.

Instead, Shanghai has been shaped by international influences. You will see European style architecture mixed with modern skyscrapers.

The city has a colonial history and was once inhabited by many foreigners.

You will notice right away that Shanghai is:

• Stylish
• Trendy

It just feels like a more western-style city compared to Beijing.

Food

Beijing: Northern Chinese Food

Let’s start with the obvious: Beijing is home to the famous Peking duck.

Overall, Beijing food tends to be:

• Hearty
• Made with wheat
• Loaded with flavor

Shanghai: Internationa Food

Now let’s talk about Shanghai.

Shanghai has a more diverse selection of foods. You will find American restaurants, Indian restaurants, you name it.

Shanghai also has amazing Chinese food specialties too!

If you’re a foodie and enjoy exploring different foods, Shanghai will cater to your cravings.

Nightlife and City Atmosphere

Beijing: More Authentic

Beijing feels more authentic to me.

But that doesn’t mean it’s nicer. When I say authentic, I mean less sleek than Shanghai.

You’ll find things like:

• Old Hutongs
• Local Markets
• Street Vendors

It can be messy at times.

Shanghai: Glamour City

If I had to compare Shanghai to a city in the US, it would be New York.

Why? Because Shanghai reminds me of Manhattan.

Everything about Shanghai feels so luxurious.

• Large shopping malls
• Clean streets

It’s a city that you can get lost in.

Ease of Travel

Beijing

Beijing was harder for us to travel. The city is huge, and a lot of popular attractions are outside of the city.

Public transportation is good but can be difficult to navigate when you don’t understand the language.

Shanghai

Everyone told me Shanghai would be easier than Beijing.

And they were right. Shanghai was incredibly easy to get around.

Everyone knows of THE Bund, so it’s easy to ask for directions to get there.

Public transit is great, and there is tons of signage in English.

The subway system is incredible.

Which city is cheaper? Beijing or Shanghai?

As two of China’s largest and most populous cities, you shouldn’t expect these cities to be super cheap.

They’re large, busy cities with tons of people.

With that being said, accommodations and food in Beijing was cheaper than Shanghai.

Shanghai wins when it comes to shopping because it’s a mecca for retail.

When Is the Best Time To Visit Beijing and Shanghai

Beijing

Visiting Beijing is best during two seasons:

• Spring (April-May)
• Autumn (September-October)

Beijing has HOT summers and very cold winters. You’ll want to avoid traveling during these times.

Shanghai

Unlike Beijing, Shanghai has some nice weather during the winter season.

Spring and autumn are still the best time to visit Shanghai though.

Activities for Kids

If you’re traveling with kids, both Beijing and Shanghai are great choices.

They both have tons of activities for children.

That being said, Shanghai might edge out Beijing since its ease of travel.

There are also plenty of kid-friendly attractions in Shanghai.

Can You Visit Both Beijing and Shanghai?

If you have the time, I highly recommend visiting both Beijing and Shanghai.

You can truly see what China is all about by seeing both cities.

They each have their own unique advantages and attractions.

China’s high-speed rail makes traveling between Beijing and Shanghai super easy.

Should I Visit Beijing or Shanghai First?

If forced to choose, I will always say start with Shanghai!

It’s such a better introduction to China.

While Beijing will give you an essence of Chinese culture, Shanghai will teach you what modern China is like.

To say that one city is better than the other would be ridiculous.

They both have their pros and cons.

But if I had to give you one last bit of advice, spend at least two days in Shanghai.
