Kyoto is full of beautiful neighborhoods. But if you were to ask me where I’d stay for myself in Kyoto, whether on my first trip or tenth, Gion is always near the top of my list.
It’s the neighborhood that many travelers dream of visiting before they’ve ever set foot in Japan. Picture narrow streets lined with stone buildings and wooden machiya houses. Lanterns glowing after dark. Hidden tea houses. Kimono clad visitors. Peaceful temples tucked away between traditional buildings. Gion provides easy access to a lot of Kyoto’s most famous attractions while also surrounding you with an atmosphere that feels truly unique compared to the rest of modern Japan.

I’ve always found Gion to be particularly magical in the early morning and evening hours. Daytime in Gion can get a bit crowded around popular spots like Hanamikoji Street and Yasaka Shrine. But once the crowds die down and the tour buses leave, the neighborhood takes on a completely different vibe. Quiet. Elegant. Atmospheric.
In this post, I’ll highlight some of my favorite hotels in Gion Kyoto. Whether you’re looking for luxury ryokans, stylish boutique hotels, or spacious family-friendly options, these are some of the best properties in the area.

Why Stay in Gion Kyoto?
Before we get to our hotel recommendations, it’s useful to first take a look at why Gion is such a desirable neighborhood for visitors to stay in.
Kyoto’s historic Gion district is located on the eastern side of Kyoto near many of the city’s most popular attractions. When staying here you will be able to easily walk to:
- Yasaka Shrine
- Kiyomizu-dera
- Kennin-ji
- Maruyama Park
- Hanamikoji Street
The neighborhood also boasts an array of delicious food options ranging from upscale kaiseki restaurants to ramen shops, cafes, and cute matcha dessert cafes.
Atmosphere is another strong point of Gion. Staying near Kyoto Station is obviously convenient but if you want to feel more immersed in history and have a memorable experience, Gion is much better. If you’re going for that “I spent my nights in Kyoto” vibe, you’ll find it here.

Had I to pick only one hotel that excels at luxury, comfort, location, and atmosphere in Kyoto, this might be it.
The vibe and design at this hotel is elegant but not overly fussy. It finds a nice balance between traditional Kyoto style with modern hotel comforts. The atmosphere alone in the lobby feels upscale and relaxing.
I especially enjoy how quiet this hotel is considering its proximity to tourist hotspots. Coming back to this hotel after a busy day in Kyoto feels calming.
Rooms are spacious for Kyoto standards and well-decorated. There is also a public bath on property. Taking a soak in the bath at the end of the day after exploring Kyoto is wonderful.
The biggest selling point of this property might just be its location. You can easily walk to Gion’ traditional streets, yet it still doesn’t feel quite as busy as being directly in the thick of it all.
Best For
- Couples
- Honeymoon trips
- Travelers wanting upscale comfort in Kyoto
Sowaka
![8 Best Hotels in Gion Kyoto ([year]): Top Luxury, Boutique & Family Stays 7 Entrance of Sowaka Kyoto illuminated at night, featuring a traditional wooden facade, stone pathway, and serene Japanese-style lighting in Gion.](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Sowaka-1024x683.webp)
Address: 480 Kiyoicho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0821, Japan
Sowaka is easily one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in Kyoto.
From the moment you step into this hotel, it doesn’t feel like your typical hotel. Instead, it feels like staying inside a beautiful historic Kyoto home. The building itself is historic with parts dating back over 100 years, but the insides have been nicely renovated with modern comforts.
Location is also fantastic. You are right in the heart of Kyoto’s Higashiyama district near many famous streets and temples.
Above all else, what sells me on this property is the atmosphere. For travelers that want to really feel like they are experiencing Kyoto and enjoy refined Japanese aesthetics, this hotel delivers.
Rooms feature minimalist decor with touches of tradition like tatami flooring, wood textures, and ambient lighting.
Expect to pay a premium for this place. However, for travelers that care more about having a unique experience in Kyoto rather than just a place to sleep, Sowaka is among the best in Gion.
Best For
- Luxury travelers
- Anniversary trips
- Travelers seeking traditional Kyoto vibes
Gion Elite Terrace
![8 Best Hotels in Gion Kyoto ([year]): Top Luxury, Boutique & Family Stays 8 Exterior of Gion Elite Terrace Kyoto at night, featuring modern Japanese architecture, warm lighting, and a stone entrance facade in Kyoto’s Gion district.](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Gion-Elite-Terrace-1024x683.webp)
Address: 44-21 Bishamoncho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0812, Japan
Gion Elite Terrace is a newer option that is surprisingly well suited for families or longer-term stays.
Room sizes in Kyoto can feel quite cramped. This is especially true if you are traveling with a family that has kids and lots of luggage. Gion Elite Terrace has some larger room layouts and apartment-style amenities that are a game changer.
Certain rooms even have kitchenettes and laundry machines. If you are planning on staying in Kyoto for more than a few days, these features come in handy.
The design is modern with some Japanese influences. It won’t feel as atmospheric as staying in a ryokan, but the benefits of conveniences like kitchenettes and more space make up for it.
In my opinion, this hotel is ideal for travelers that want to see Kyoto without rushing around. You can spend all day exploring the city, then return to a comfortable room that doesn’t feel super compact.
Best For
- Families
- Longer stays
- Travelers wanting extra room space
Hotel Alza Kyoto
![8 Best Hotels in Gion Kyoto ([year]): Top Luxury, Boutique & Family Stays 9 Night exterior view of Hotel Alza Kyoto featuring elegant Japanese-inspired architecture, warm interior lighting, and a modern traditional facade near Gion.](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Hotel-Alza-Kyoto-1024x683.webp)
Address: 33 Benzaitencho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0802, Japan
Something I immediately noticed about Hotel Alza Kyoto is how roomy the spaces feel.
Japan has some smaller hotels than others, and Kyoto is often one of those places. Hotel rooms at Alza feel open and spacious. Suites are available, and some rooms have views that overlook the Kamo River.
Speaking of location, you’re also close to both Gion and downtown Kyoto’s shopping and eating district. Having that balance is great if you want access to both tourist attractions and nightlife.
The interior design is more modern than traditional, but it still has Japanese flair here and there.
Hotel Alza is a great pick for travelers that value comfort, larger rooms, and a nice low-key luxury experience.
Best For
- Couples
- Travelers wanting spacious rooms
- Visitors that want a mix of sightseeing and shopping
Kyoto Granbell Hotel
![8 Best Hotels in Gion Kyoto ([year]): Top Luxury, Boutique & Family Stays 10 Exterior entrance of Kyoto Granbell Hotel at dusk, showcasing modern Kyoto-style architecture with wooden lattice details and warm ambient lighting.](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Kyoto-Granbell-Hotel.webp)
Address: Japan, 〒605-0802 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, Yamatocho, 27番
Kyoto Granbell Hotel is a solid mid-range hotel that does a lot of things right.
Proximity to Gion’s main tourist streets is this hotel’s biggest strength. You can walk to almost everywhere you will want to visit within Gion. Restaurants, cafes, and train stations are also extremely close by.
The hotel itself feels stylish with its modern Japanese design. It also tends to look more put-together than your average hotel for the price.
There is also a hidden underground public bath that guests can use. Taking a dip in the bath adds a relaxing component not always found with regular city hotels in Japan.
Rooms can feel on the smaller side depending on what type you book. But overall, the place just feels clean, comfortable, and visitor-friendly.
If you’re looking for a hotel that allows you to easily explore Kyoto without breaking the bank on luxury prices, Kyoto Granbell Hotel is a great choice.
Best For
- Mid-Range travelers
- First-time visitors to Kyoto
- Couples wanting convenience
Ryokan Motonago
![8 Best Hotels in Gion Kyoto ([year]): Top Luxury, Boutique & Family Stays 11 Traditional exterior entrance of Ryokan Motonago in Kyoto, featuring warm lantern lighting, wooden sliding doors, and classic Japanese ryokan architecture in Gion.](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ryokan-Motonago-1024x683.webp)
Address: Japan, 〒605-0072 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, 高台寺ねねの道鷲尾町511
For something on the more traditional side, check out Ryokan Motonago.
This Kyoto ryokan is located near Yasaka Shrine as well as the popular Higashiyama area. Staying at a ryokan is a unique way to experience Japan if you haven’t done so before. These traditional Japanese inns give you a taste of what life was like in Japan for many centuries.
Sleeping will be on futons laid out over tatami flooring. Rooms are simpler but still beautifully decorated in Japanese style. You can also expect more authentic Japanese hospitality from your hosts at a ryokan.
While some travelers might find staying at a ryokan to be inconvenient, I enjoy the experience. There is something to be said about staying at least one or two nights at a traditional Japanese inn in Kyoto.
Meals here will also likely be part of the experience. Traditional Japanese breakfasts and dinners can be had at ryokans. Many will even offer package deals that include famous Kyoto meals.
Best For
- Cultural travelers
- Those interested in a traditional Japanese stay experience
- Couples looking for a unique Kyoto atmosphere
OMO5 Kyoto Gion by Hoshino Resorts
![8 Best Hotels in Gion Kyoto ([year]): Top Luxury, Boutique & Family Stays 12 Entrance of OMO5 Kyoto Gion by Hoshino Resorts with a guest in a kimono walking past traditional noren curtains and warm ambient lighting in Kyoto.](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/OMO5-Kyoto-Gion-by-Hoshino-Resorts-1024x683.webp)
Address: Japan, 〒605-0073 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, Gionmachi Kitagawa, 288
For stylish yet comfortable hotels in Gion, Hoshino Resorts does a great job. OMO5 Kyoto Gion is a hotel option by that chain that I really enjoyed.
This hotel exudes a more modern, youthful energy than some older luxury hotels in Gion.
I find it to be a great pick for young couples or solo travelers that want a trendy hotel to stay at while in Kyoto.
Location is another strong point here. Like many hotels in Gion, you have great access to walking around the streets at night. Check out local cafes or wander over to popular shrines in the early morning before crowds start to come.
Rooms are on the smaller side typical of hotels in this neighborhood. Though they are nicely designed.
Best For
- Younger travelers
- Solo travelers
- Modern boutique hotel enthusiasts
Dhawa Yura Kyoto
![8 Best Hotels in Gion Kyoto ([year]): Top Luxury, Boutique & Family Stays 13 Exterior facade of Dhawa Yura Kyoto featuring modern Kyoto-inspired architecture, geometric window design, and a sleek contemporary hotel exterior near Gion.](https://www.shinyvisa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Dhawa-Yura-Kyoto-1-1024x683.webp)
Address: Japan, 〒605-0009 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, Ohashicho, 84 ダーワ・悠洛 京都
Dhawa Yura Kyoto is another nice hotel that’s a little different. It’s located closer to Sanjo but is still very convenient for visiting Gion.
The hotel has a modern, chic, and slightly international feel to it. If you prefer more modern hotels rather than traditional ryokan in Japan, you’ll love Dhawa Yura.
What I like about this hotel is that it strikes a nice balance. It has a refined feel without feeling stuffy. Room sizes are spacious enough to accommodate longer-term stays too.
Transportation and connectivity to the rest of Kyoto is excellent here. You can hop on a train and be exploring new parts of Kyoto in no time.
There are also tons of eateries nearby. And like I said before, you can get to many of Gion’ historic streets within minutes.
Best For
- Modern luxury travelers
- Visitors that want great transport connectivity
- Couples and business travelers
Is It Better to Stay in Gion or Kyoto Station?
Really depends on your travel style.
If you’re the kind of person who values convenience and transportation links above all else then Kyoto Station is unbeatable. Kyoto Station allows you much easier access to trains, airport transfers, and day trips.
But for me personally I think staying in Gion will give you a much more Kyoto-esque experience.
Walking through empty lantern lit streets at night, or going to temples early in the morning before they fill up just feels different when you are already staying in the historic district.
If you’re staying in Kyoto for a short trip and want to soak up as much culture, food, temples, and atmosphere as you can, then I almost always recommend Gion.
Tips for Booking Hotels in Gion Kyoto
Book Early During Sakura and Autumn Season
Kyoto hotels get really pricey during the cherry blossom season and during autumn when leaves change color. Great hotels in Gion fill up months in advance so book early!
Look at Room Size
Many hotel rooms in Japan are smaller than what most foreign tourists are used to. Book higher room categories when possible if you’re traveling with family and need more space.
Confirm Walking Distance
Some hotels further away from the historic districts may still list themselves as “Gion” hotels, even if they require a long walk. Double check where the hotel is located on a map before booking.
Choose Between Ryokan vs Modern Hotel
If you want to experience something more traditional, stay in a ryokan. But if you have kids or lots of suitcases, you might find a modern hotel more convenient.
Final Thoughts on the Best Hotels in Gion Kyoto
Gion is one of my favorite neighborhoods to stay in Kyoto. It has the feel that many visitors dream of experiencing while in Japan.
Wake up early and stroll empty temple streets before tourists arrive. Spend your evenings wandering through illuminated alleyways and popping into tea houses for matcha desserts or small izakaya meals. And above all else, Gion feels authentic to Kyoto ’s rich history.
If you have the budget, I believe Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion has one of the best balances of amenities for your money.
For a luxury boutique hotel, you can’t go wrong with Sowaka.
Gion Elite Terrace is a great option for families while traditional travelers will love staying at Ryokan Motonago.
