Tokyo is huge. It’s hectic. Sprawling. Made up of neighborhoods that can each feel like their own city.

But if you’re looking for classic Japan, delicious eats, pedestrian friendly streets, family-friendly attractions, and great transit access, Asakusa is still one of my favorite neighborhoods to stay in Tokyo.

Centered around Sensō-ji (more popularly known as Asakusa Temple among travelers), Tokyo’s busiest Buddhist temple, Asakusa is a neighborhood with a vibe completely different from what you’ll find in downtown districts like Shibuya or Shinjuku. It’s peaceful in the mornings. Traditionally Japanese. At night, the temple grounds lit up are unexpectedly serene once the evening crowds depart.

Asakusa is ideal for:

• Families with children
• First-time visitors to Tokyo
• Solo travelers looking for a quieter area to base themselves
• Foodies
• Muslim travelers that want easier access to halal food
• Travelers that want bigger hotel rooms for your money

Asakusa is also incredibly convenient. You can get to both Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport without too much trouble. And the hotels here are often much roomier than you’ll find in Tokyo’s central business districts.

Why Stay Near Asakusa Temple?

One tip about staying in different areas of Tokyo is that your hotel location can drastically affect your experience.

If you stay in Shinjuku, you’ll soak in nightlife and hustle and bustle. If you stay in Ginza, you’ll have easy access to luxury shopping. If you stay around Sensō-ji, you’ll soak in atmosphere.

You can wander down Nakamise Street before breakfast, pick up some fresh melon pan or matcha snacks, and explore the temple grounds before the tour buses come. At night, it’s like stepping into a movie with how the streets are lit with lanterns.

Asakusa is also:

• Quieter and more spacious than central Tokyo
• Often less expensive than touristy Shibuya or Ginza
• Easier to navigate with strollers/kids

Richmond Hotel Premier Asakusa International

This is going to be one of the safest recommendations on this list. You can’t really go wrong by staying here.

Location-wise, it’s almost perfect. You’re close enough that you can walk to Sensō-ji in under 5 minutes. But far enough away that things are quieter at night.

What I really like about this hotel is just how convenient it is. Nearby Don Quijote, tons of restaurants downstairs, convenience stores all over the place, great station access.

And yet the rooms are also bigger and more comfortable than a lot of Tokyo business hotels I’ve stayed at. Higher floor rooms even have incredible views of Tokyo Skytree.

Why I would stay here:

• Family-friendly neighborhoods
• Excellent breakfast
• Easy walking access to places
• Consistent service standards

Recommendation: Book the Richmond Hotel Premier Asakusa if you want a safe, comfortable option that is easy for families to reach everything.

The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon by Hulic

If you want something fancier and with more style, this hotel jumps out at you as soon as you lay eyes on it.

The views from the rooftop terrace are legitimately one of the best in Tokyo. Especially during sunset, you can see Tokyo Skytree tower along with various parts of the Asakusa skyline.

You are also extremely close to Kaminarimon Gate itself. This means you can arrive super early at the temple area before any big crowds.

The decor has a modern feel to it while still fitting in Japanese styling.

Best for:

• Couples
• Honeymooners
• Travelers that want more boutique style
• Photographers

The underrated bonus of this hotel? It has SUPER convenient station access. Once you learn how to navigate the Tokyo subway system, getting around is a breeze.

Asakusa View Hotel

One of the most famous hotels in this area for good reason. The views.

Seriously. If you’re able to book a Tokyo Skytree-facing room, it’s worth it. Seeing the Tokyo skyline at night from this hotel is next level.

Rooms are also some of the largest I’ve seen at Tokyo hotels for the price you pay.

This property is one I tend to recommend to families because:

• Rooms have more space for luggage
• Easier to move around with strollers
• More than one eating venue
• Nearby shopping streets

It’s also slightly quieter than being right next to the busiest streets in Asakusa.

Onyado Nono Asakusa Natural Hot Spring

This hotel offers you something that is rare to find in Tokyo hotels: atmosphere.

From the moment you check in, you leave your shoes at the front and continue walking on tatami tile throughout the rest of the property. It instantly feels more like a ryokan than a standard city hotel.

The main highlight? Natural hot spring baths.

If you’ve had long days wandering around Tokyo, taking an onsen night bath is heavenly.

Things I really like about this hotel:

• Really relaxing vibe
• Superb baths
• They give you free ramen late at night!

Recommendation: Book Onyado Nono if you want something that feels distinctly Japanese rather than a standard international business hotel.

Mimaru Tokyo Asakusa Station

Speaking of Japanese hotels, if you have kids, Mimaru has some of the best accommodations around.

Size always seems to be an issue with Tokyo hotel rooms. Mimaru takes a different approach by designing apartment-style rooms. You get kitchenettes, dining areas, and rooms with bunk beds.

What I love about this specific Asakusa branch is just how convenient the location is. Very close to station and river.

Why families love Mimaru Hotels:

• Rooms have more space
• Includes kitchenette
• Has laundry facilities
• Better if you’re staying longer than a couple nights
• Ideal for toddlers and children

Honestly, if you’re staying in Tokyo for 4-5+ nights, I think Mimaru Hotels work better than traditional Tokyo hotel rooms. Travelling with young kids in Japan? Book Mimaru Tokyo Asakusa Station.

Tobu Hotel Levant Tokyo

Ok, this hotel is technically closer to Kinshicho instead of right next to Asakusa Temple. But hear me out.

Value.

Let me say that again. VALUE.

For Tobu Hotel Levant Tokyo, you often get:

• Bigger rooms
• Better views
• Super easy access to airport limousine bus
• Newer hotel

And you’re still close enough that getting into Asakusa doesn’t take long.

Tokyo Skytree views from certain rooms are gorgeous.

It may sound crazy, but if you have a lot of luggage or are traveling with children, being able to take the airport limousine bus can be a game changer.

Hotel Gracery Asakusa

Hotel Gracery Asakusa is incredibly efficient. And by that I mean in the best way possible.

Rooms are on the smaller side but the layouts feel very open and modern. Everything is clean and streamlined. Really easy to figure out how to use stuff too.

Location is great for exploring:

• Asakusa
• Ueno
• Akihabara
• Tokyo Skytree

I’d say Hotel Gracery Asakusa is ideal for:

• Solo travelers
• Couples
• Shorter stays in Tokyo
• People that value transit convenience

Really any traveler that wants to explore Tokyo all day and just have a comfy place to come back to.

PROSTYLE Ryokan Tokyo Asakusa

If you want to experience more of a traditional Japanese ryokan without having to go out of the way in rural Japan, PROSTYLE Ryokan has you covered.

Rooms feature tatami accents and low sitting furniture. It creates a much more relaxing environment than what you typically find at Tokyo hotels.

The riverside location is also great. It’s a bit quieter than being right on the busiest streets with tons of tourists.

Things I love:

• Japanese-inspired style
• Atmosphere
• Biggest bathtub I’ve seen at any Tokyo hotel
• Definitely gives you that cultural feeling
• Great for couples

Is Asakusa a Good Base for Tokyo?

Yes…particularly if you:

• Are traveling with kids/families
• Are new to Japan
• Want a slower-paced trip
• Want to experience the “flavor” of Japanese culture
• Are budget conscious but don’t love hostel living (you get a lot more space!)

I understand that some people are concerned that Asakusa is “far away” from other parts of Tokyo. However, Tokyo’s train system is so reliable that this is rarely a problem. You can easily visit:

• Tokyo Disneyland
• Akihabara
• Ueno Park
• Tokyo Skytree

(and many more! ), then head back to Asakusa at night to be in a quieter neighborhood.

It’s that perfect balance that makes travelers love Asakusa.
