Each winter, Sapporo is host to one of Japan’s most magical events: The Sapporo Snow Festival. Giant snow sculptures, towering illuminated ice displays, street food stalls selling everything your stomach desires, and throngs of people fill the city for several weeks in February. When you visit, your choice of hotel can make or break your trip.
The festival itself takes place at several sites throughout the city, with Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome being the main areas. Booking a hotel close to these areas lets you walk to the festival sites, take in the nighttime illuminations at your leisure (versus racing to catch a train home), and soak in the atmosphere from opening to closing.

One thing becomes abundantly clear after visiting Sapporo in the winter: Convenience is key. The temperature is usually below freezing, sidewalks are slick, and schlepping shopping bags full of goodies through snow just to find your hotel is not ideal. For that reason, staying close to Odori Park or near a major subway stop will often be worth the price.
Below we’ve compiled some of our favorite hotels within walking distance of the Sapporo Snow Festival. From luxury to family-friendly to boutique to budget options, we’ve got you covered.

Why Staying Near the Sapporo Snow Festival Matters
A block party stretches for more than a kilometer at the festival grounds in Odori Park. It will be packed shoulder-to-shoulder during prime night hours. Being close by will let you explore the festival very early in the morning before tour buses show up, or overnight when the sculptures are lit up.
Sapporo weather in the winter can be unpredictable too. Snowstorms will come out of nowhere. Temperatures will also drop making long walks with luggage tiresome. If your hotel is near Sapporo Station, Odori Station or Susukino Station your trip will be much easier.
Food is another benefit of staying close to the center. Winter in Sapporo is fantastic for ramen, seafood bowls, grilled crab, jingisukan (lamb barbecue), and Hokkaido sweets. If you’re staying near the center you can walk back to your hotel after dinner rather than freezing on long subway rides.

Rooms are spacious compared to typical Japanese hotel rooms. If you are arriving with bulky winter luggage this can be a lifesaver. Thick jackets, snow boots, shopping bags, and camera equipment can quickly make a tiny room feel cluttered.
Their breakfast buffet is delicious if you want to load up on Hokkaido favorites before heading out in the cold. Another nice feature is reliable service. Many staff members are used to interacting with international guests during festival season and everything just feels buttery smooth.
I think this hotel works best for families or visitors who have never been to Sapporo.

If you want nightlife, food, and easy access to the Susukino Ice World section of the festival, Mercure Sapporo is a great option.
Susukino is especially fun during the Snow Festival. After dark, all of the illuminated ice sculptures create a totally different vibe than Odori Park. Staying close means you can party in the area late into the night without having to worry about transportation.
Mercure Sapporo has a more international vibe. Rooms are comfortable by Japanese city standards. It is also surrounded by 24-hour convenience stores, ramen shops, izakayas, and cafes.

Tips for Booking Hotels During the Snow Festival
Hotel rates double/triple during the festival. Keep this in mind if you’re comparing prices to average winter dates.
Booking in advance is crucial. Many centrally-located hotels book up months ahead of time, especially on weekends.
Double check walking routes. What may seem like a “nearby” hotel on google maps may not feel so close once you’re trudging through snow with luggage. Any hotel with access to an underground walkway or subway station is significantly more appealing.
If you have young children, book hotels with more space and easy access to the station. Hokkaido winters can wear young children out after a full day of playing outside.
Final Thoughts
Japan’s Sapporo Snow Festival is one of the most memorable winter experiences you can have. Between the massive sculptures, lively atmosphere, warm street food, and picturesque snowy streets it’s an event you don’t want to miss.
Picking the perfect hotel to stay at can really set the tone for your trip. Staying close to Odori Park is ideal if you want to be close to the sights, but Susukino is better if nightlife is your scene. Hotels around Sapporo Station are a great option if you’re planning on traveling to other areas of Hokkaido as well.
In my opinion, location is even more important than luxury when staying in Sapporo for the Snow Festival. There’s nothing like being able to walk back to your hotel quickly after being outside all day in the cold.
Try to book your hotel well in advance, bring a good pair of boots to navigate the snow, and allow yourself some time to discover the city. A lot of my favorite memories in Sapporo were spent getting lost in the tiny side streets, finding random hole-in-the-wall ramen shops, and watching the city light up under a fresh blanket of snow.
