The Sun of Granary Resort and Villas Review: Family Stay Amid Ubud’s Rice Fields

Are you looking for a quiet and private Balinese hideaway with all the green rice paddies, gentle breeze and natural beauty of the island? The Sun of Granary Resort and Villas in Ubud should be on your shortlist. We recently spent two nights there on our family trip to Bali, and those two nights were among the most relaxing ones on our entire vacation.

From the minute we stepped off the car, the resort welcomed us with a romantic, rustic and traditional Balinese vibe that made us feel as if we had stumbled upon our own private tropical oasis.

The Sun of Granary Resort and Villas: First Impressions

The drive to the Sun of Granary takes you through the less-traveled backroads of Ubud to this hidden gem that seems to be tucked away from the busier central areas of town, yet is just a short drive from Ubud’s main attractions.

As I entered the villa, I immediately fell in love with the views of the rice terraces surrounding the resort and the peaceful natural ambiance. Made of natural wood, bamboo and thatched elements, the entire resort beautifully fades into its natural backdrop and makes you feel as if you are in some sort of countryside luxury villa rather than a resort.

The Room & Design

Our villa came with a canopy-style king bed adorned with billowy white curtains. The natural wood finishes, paired with light textiles and intricate Balinese patterns throughout the room, created a perfectly serene and romantic escape. Attention to detail was paid to every nook and cranny of this room — from the hand-carved wooden headboard to the woven panels.

The two glass doors opened to our private balcony, from which we had a view of the resort gardens. The room also came with a mini-fridge, a comfortable armchair and a wooden writing desk with a chair that was just right for enjoying a morning coffee.

The Balcony

We spent a significant amount of time on our private balcony that came with two wooden chairs and a small table, which was perfect for enjoying a morning tea or a late afternoon cocktail while listening to the bamboo stalks rustling in the wind and the birds chirping.

One morning as we were sitting there and enjoying the sunrise, the rays of sunlight gently filtered through the palm fronds and created such beautiful golden shadows on the floor — in that moment, I was reminded of just how serene Ubud can be during certain times of day.

The Bathroom

The bathroom in the villa was also infused with rustic Balinese accents. There was a granite countertop, large wooden mirror and open shelving with a few amenities from the resort, neatly arranged. The rain shower was the perfect way to relax after some afternoon adventures in Ubud on one of their infamous hot and humid afternoons.

Simple but thoughtfully executed, it was not ostentatious but clearly carried a very natural vibe in line with the rest of the villa’s design.

Resort Surroundings

The Sun of Granary lives up to its name — it is surrounded by rice paddies as far as the eye can see. We often took strolls around the property in the mornings, leisurely walking around the resort pathways and admiring the patchwork of emerald-green paddies and palm trees.

In the late afternoons, we also spent time at the café near the paddies, just watching the sun slowly set behind the horizon and light dancing on the fields and trees. Magical.

Dining by the Rice Fields

The restaurant at the resort has outdoor seating that directly faces the rice paddies. We had our breakfast there every morning, which quickly became one of the highlights of our day. It was the usual mix of tropical fruits, pastries, eggs and local Indonesian staples like nasi goreng.

Dining with the view of rice fields in the background and a cool morning breeze — it made every meal special. The little one was especially delighted at the prospect of feeding ducks that were wandering around the rice paddies in the distance.

Family-Friendly Vibes

What made this place special for us and will likely make it a great option for other families is the fact that the entire resort is super kid-friendly. Staff was incredibly kind and patient with our little one and always greeted her with big smiles. The open spaces allowed her to run around freely, and we felt like the villa was safe and cozy for her.

The whole ambiance also allowed us to relax as parents, not having to deal with crowds of people or children running around in the immediate vicinity. We enjoyed having quiet mornings and long naps all day long, with nothing but nature all around us.

Who It’s Best Suited For

  • Couples looking for a romantic and rustic hideaway
  • Families who would prefer a quiet and natural setting for their children
  • Travelers in the mood for a peaceful stay in Ubud, but away from more crowded areas
  • Those who prefer slower-paced, natural, boho-chic vibes over more commercial resorts

It is not for those who like to party or dance the night away (not that there are many places to do that in Ubud), nor is it for people who prefer modern high-end luxury hotels.

Tips for Staying at the Sun of Granary Resort and Villas

  • Book early if you prefer a room with a view of the rice fields — these rooms are very popular.
  • Bring mosquito repellent if you plan to spend time on your balcony in the evening.
  • Rent a scooter or arrange transport if you plan to explore central Ubud, since it is about a 10–15 minute drive away.
  • Eat breakfast outside early in the morning, when the air is still crisp and refreshing.

Conclusion

Our experience at The Sun of Granary Resort and Villas was exactly the kind of much-needed respite from everyday life that we needed. It had everything we were looking for — natural, quiet and beautiful surroundings, gorgeous views and, of course, that signature Balinese hospitality.

It made me remember that the best luxury does not have to be marble bathrooms or infinity pools. It can be peace and quiet and space and connection with nature.

If you are looking for a family or couple’s trip to Ubud that will give you the genuine local feel, but in a more quiet and private setting surrounded by rice paddies and natural beauty, I highly recommend this place.
