Tokyo by neighborhoods is a common theme when discussing places to visit and stay in Japan’s bustling capital city. But few neighborhoods encapsulate Tokyo like Shibuya Crossing. The area is full of bright neon lights, massive digital advertisements, stylish locals and tourists, limitless shopping, and incredible food. For these reasons (and more) if you’re visiting Tokyo for the first time, staying around Shibuya Crossing will allow you to experience Tokyo at its finest.
I’ve stayed around Shibuya many times and I have to say it’s probably my favorite area to stay at in all of Tokyo. Not only is the transportation convenient with train stations that take you directly to Shinjuku, Harajuku, Ginza, Yokohama, and the airports via connected train lines but Shibuya as a whole has that energetic feeling going on 24/7.

Looking for a luxurious hotel stay in Tokyo near Shibuya Crossing? This hotel is one of the best.
Space. I felt this was what really set this hotel apart from others in Tokyo. Hotel rooms in Tokyo can be tiny. The rooms at Hotel Gracery feel spacious, and can comfortably fit families with luggage.
Night views of Tokyo from the top floors are beautiful. It’s one of those nightscapes you’ll remember lying in your hotel room.
It’s a 5-minute walk from Shibuya Station. Walking distance to the hotel from Shibuya Station is convenient without being right inside the madness of Shibuya Crossing.

Say what you want about big brand-name hotels, but this may very well be the most Shibuya-ken deluxe hotel in terms of location (closest to Shibuya Crossing).
Many of its rooms face the crossing, and waking up to that view really is something many travelers dream of when visiting Tokyo. If you’re wanting that quintessential neon Tokyo view, this is it.
Another nice benefit of staying at Excel Hotel Tokyu is that it’s connected to Shibuya Station. There’s nothing worse than exploring Tokyo all day and realizing you’re stuck miles away from your hotel with no good way to get back.
I’d recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Tokyo for the first time just because of the insanely convenient location.
Pros
- Direct access to Shibuya Station
- Amazing views of the crossing
- Transportation access is superb
- Shopping is right next door
Cons
- Rooms can be on the smaller side.
- Want a room that faces the crossing? It’ll cost you.

Sequence MIYASHITA PARK sits right next to Miyashita Park atop cool cafes, restaurants and shops.
Modern and sleek. The entire feel of the hotel gives you that vibe. The rooms aren’t gigantic by any means, but they get the job done efficiently and are nicely designed.
One thing I loved about this place was the lifestyle surrounding it. Right outside their doors there are rooftop hangs, a skate park, cafe’s and plenty of places to lounge around and feel like your young again.

Hip, but doesn’t overdo it.
Tokyo meets boutique. Modern Japanese culture infused into the decor with just enough upscale touches to make you feel it’s more curated than your standard chain hotel experience.
I would recommend this hotel for couples because it just feels intimate. Cozy, hip, has rooftop spaces, restaurants. Walking distance to bars and restaurants where you can people watch around Shibuya.
Perfect location if your looking to do nightlife, shopping, and food hopping.

My Favorite Practical Hotel in Tokyo.
Washing machines and microwaves in rooms sound nice. These appliances become life savers when you find yourself staying in Japan for more than a few nights. Laundry convenience is more important than most realize, especially for summer travel or trips with families. The area is also a tad quieter than right at the crossing but is still within walking distance to everything.
Pros
- Has washing machines in rooms
- Ideal for longer stays
- Comfortable business- hotel feel.
- Great Value for Stay in Shibuya.
Best For
- With Families
- Longer Term Stays
- Repeat Visitors to Tokyo

For those who value convenience and speed when traveling, this property is fantastic.
Located extremely close to the station, traveling via train early in the morning or to the airport is hassle-free.
Rooms are modern, clean and everything you need. This isn’t the Ritz-Carlton but it is dependable comfort in the heart of one of Tokyo’s busiest neighborhoods.
I feel that this hotel is ideal for business travelers or travelers who will be spending most of their time out and about seeing the city.
What I Liked
- Fantastic access to the train station.
- Clean rooms with a modern feel.
- Dependable service.
- Efficient layout.

Modern hotel, very hip city living feel.
Feels like one of those boutique lifestyle hotels for hipstery travelers who care about design and aesthetics and love coffee shops and cool ambiance.
The lobby/common areas feel energetic but not hectic. There is also a really popular pizza place downstairs that lots of people seemed to patronize.
Location is close to the crossing and removed enough from the craziness of the tourist areas.
Pros
- Stylish common areas
- Chic atmosphere
- Nice cafe scene
- Modern rooms

If you’ve stayed at one Dormy Inn in Japan, you’ve stayed at them all. They are consistently good.
My favorite thing about this Dormy Inn was the public bath. By nightfall, after wandering around Tokyo for 20,000 steps, there is nothing better than jumping into a hot bath.
They’re also known for serving free late night ramen and man, is it good. Considering how exhausted your feet will be after walking around all night, it feels especially heavenly.
This hotel is located conveniently between Shibuya and Harajuku which means you can enjoy exploring both!
Pros
- Great value
- Public bath
- Free late night ramen
- Within walking distance of Harajuku
Tips for Booking Hotels Near Shibuya Crossing
Book in Advance During Busy Times
Tokyo hotels are known to book up far in advance during:
- Cherry blossom season
- Golden Week
- Autumn foliage season
- New year holidays
Hotel prices around Shibuya can skyrocket during these seasons.
Double Check the Room Size
Rooms in Tokyo can be smaller than you might expect. Make sure to pay attention to square meter sizes if you’re traveling with family or bulky luggage.
Walking Distance from Stations is Relative
“5 minute walk” can actually take much longer in Tokyo if you have luggage. There are often stairs, crowded sidewalks, and crossings to navigate.
Hotels with direct station access or that are extremely close to Shibuya Station can be life savers.
Avoiding the Crossings is Better with Family
If you’re traveling with kids, staying just a bit off the beaten path from the crossing may allow you to have your cake and eat it too. You’ll be close to all the action while avoiding the rowdiest nights.
Is Shibuya Better Than Shinjuku?
It depends on how you like to travel.
For me, Shibuya is a little easier and nicer for first timers. It just feels newer and trendier and less overwhelming than Shinjuku.
Shinjuku is heavier on nightlife/party entertainment density. Shibuya just feels more even with shops/restaurants/cafe and transit.
I usually suggest Shibuya first to families and couples.
Final Verdict
The primary advantage of staying around Shibuya Crossing is convenience—you can’t find a better location in Tokyo.
At the high end, Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel provides the best overall luxury stay.
If you’re visiting Tokyo for the first time, you can’t go wrong with Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu, which boasts views of the crossing and the Tokyo skyline.
Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya and sequence MIYASHITA PARK are excellent boutique-style hotels with modern vibes.
Tokyu Stay Shibuya and Dormy Inn Premium Shibuya Jingumae are good budget-friendly options for families and solo travelers who appreciate convenience.
