Ho Chi Minh (HCM) is the biggest city in Vietnam and is a place where tourists love to visit when they are in Vietnam. One of the must-go places in HCM is the ever lively Pham Ngu Lao street where you can find a lot of restaurants, travel shops, agents, and hostels cluster together. In my recent trip to HCM, we stayed in the Tripwriter Hotel & Bistro located inside Pham Ngu Lao street and had a short but impressive experience.
Tripwriter Hotel & Bistro is located in a small lane that we nearly overlooked. The gate is small but the moment you entered, you realize the inside is totally different. At the very front is a small yard filled with plants which cover the entire ceiling. In the morning, the sun rays cast through, making space feels cozy and warm. Although the hotel is named Tripwriter, there are more typewriters all over the places. In addition to the old school furniture and tiles, the living room gives an aura of vintage style.
There is a hand-made guitar beside the wall, which anyone who pass by can have a play. This is how the living room, canteen, and cafe looks like.
We checked in the hotel quite late at around 10 pm. The receptionist was a young boy wearing a big black framed glasses. He speaks in perfect American English and is very friendly and patient. He helped us to settle down everything and even recommended us the nearby 24-hour restaurant as we were craving for some supper.
We stayed on the first floor just around the corner of stairs. The rooms are not that impressive in my opinion. (and so I did not bother to take any photos). The guest service and the breakfast are however great.
Fruits and drinks are free flow and the lady staff will confirm your order with you to prepare breakfast individually. The bacon tasted really good – crispy but not oily at all.
Getting to Tripwriter Hotel
- We took a taxi from the domestic airport in HCM. The journey took around 30 mins. Most drivers will know the way as its located in the famous Pham Ngu Lao street.

Summary
I will highly recommend this hotel if you value service and staff over room quality when choosing your accomodation. We did encountered some very impolite people during our Vietnam trip but their staff has been so nice that we would really appreciate the kindness of Vietnamese people. Located in a strategic and convenient location, you can easily visit the nearby tourist attractions such as the Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts Museum. This is a hotel filled with energy and youth.
